Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of Materia Medica This work was originally prepared for the use of those attending the Lectures on the Materia Medica, in the Homoeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, and at their request. It contains the characteristic and most prominent special symptoms of the best proved and most used of our Medicines. The distinction of symptoms, as the result of provings on the healthy (pathogenetic, ) or as the result of clinical observations on the sick (cura ti've, ) or as belonging to both these classes, has not been retained m this work. Such distinctions belong exclusively to the complete Materia Medica, the study of which the present d104-book is intended to facilitate, not to supersede. And to a more thorough and satisfactory study and knowledge of Materia Medica than has been general of late years, it is sincerely hoped that this book may prove both an introduction and a guide. The last revision of the Pharmacopoeia has required, on the part of the revisers, very exceptional work directed toward the subject of stand ards; and inasmuch as the United States Pharmacopoeia, as well as the National Formulary, is mentioned in the statute, known as the Food and Drugs Law, this revision has become of greatest importance. Recognizing this, great pains have been taken in the revision of the present edition, that the standards, whenever mentioned, shall conform to the legal standard above referred to. Book Materia Medica and Pharmacy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Materia Medica and Pharmacy Classic Reprint written by Reynold Webb Wilcox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materia Medica and Pharmacy In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States pharmacopmia so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The forthcoming revision of the pharmacopmia has given the Opportunity. The many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two distinct parts; this, the first, being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy and the second to Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work full atten tion is given to pharmaceutical processes, to the various kinds of preparations, with their dosage, and to the art of prescrib ing; after which the description of remedies is taken up in detail. The list of therapeutic agents is divided into two main parts, under the heads of Inorganic and Organic Materia Medica, and the general classification adopted is one based on the grouping of the articles according to the class and chemical division or natural order to which each belongs. In order to make the book more complete, condensed descriptions of the action and therapeutic use of all the remedies have been ap pended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Materia Medica and Pharmacy: Two Volumes in One IN composing the following work, the object which I princi pally had in View was to render more useful the lectures I deliver, on the subjects of which it treats. I could not doubt of the advantages to be derived from an outline which pre sents to the student the general arrangement of the course, and a summary of the leading facts and principles which it is designed to illustrate. And I deemed this the more necessary, as the classification of the Materia Medica, which I have adopted, and some of the views of the operations of medicines, are different from those which have hitherto been proposed.
