Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of Elementary Lectures in Psychology, Delivered in the University of Toronto 1. All possible objects of human contemplation may be grouped as follows: (a) Material things; (b) Minds; (c) The Divine or Absolute Being. 2. The first group includes all the elements and forces of nature; those things which fall under the cognizance of the senses : and whose investigation is the special business of the physical sciences. These sciences may therefore be called objective or cosmological. 3. The second group includes all intelligence, wherever we find it. By intelligence is meant, that which feels and knows, as distinguished from that which is felt and known. The investigation of intelligence cannot be done directly by the senses, but is the work of consciousness itself. These studies arc therefore subjective or psychological. 4. The third heading stands for that existence upon which all other existence depends. This absolute existence cannot lie known by the senses, nor even by the ordinary intellectual powers, but must be apprehended in a high moral or spiritual intuition. Its study, therefore, is transcendent or ontological. 5. In accordance with this classification, human studies may be grouped, as regards their subject matter, into physical, mental, and theological sciences. 6. Psychology finds its place in this classification as mental science, or the investigation of intelligence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of Psychology This Syllabus, prepared primarily for use in my own classes, is published in its present form with the belief that, as emphasizing the more essential aspects of the subject and omitting minor details, it may prove serviceable as (in the stricter sense) a text for the brief course in Psychology practicable in high schools and academies generally. It is also hoped that, as a summary View of the subject, it may prove acceptable as a guide to private students as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Psychology: A Text-Book for Normal Schools and for Teachers Professional Reading Courses The present volume has grown up in the class room out of an attempt to discover -what it is profitable to know and what it is possible to teach in psychology to a class of prospective teachers. The results observed in teaching these lessons to more than a thousand students seem to justify both the selection of material and the adoption of the method. Book Syllabus of Psychology for Use in Normal Schools and Colleges

Download or read book Syllabus of Psychology for Use in Normal Schools and Colleges written by William A. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of Psychology for Use in Normal Schools and Colleges, Vol. 1 While this Syllabus is printed for use in the author's own classes, where in the conduct of the class exercises its philosophical presuppositions may be ignored or only incidentally stated as the exigencies of the discussions appear to demand, respect for the critical general reader, into whose hands it may by chance come, necessitates a brief fore-word of explanation. The author regards Psychology as a "natural science," concerned with the description and explanation of a characteristic body of phenomena. He accepts the spirit and method of the "New Psychology," without disparaging the results of observation and constructive thinking in the past. While in his philosophical attitude he would probably find his place with the monistic idealists, as a teacher of elementary General Psychology his standpoint is that of a naive dualism, accepting unquestioned for the purposes of scientific study the existence of an external world that may be sensed through the body mechanism and known in the conscious individual life. It is thought that each modern science may rightfully transform reality for its own purposes, leaving to the meta-physician the justification of all of its ontological and epistemological assumptions and postulates. Consequently, no question is raised as to the substantial nature of the human soul, either to insist that it is "nothing but a stream of mental processes" or a static entity with capacities, or "faculties," for various forms of functioning. Introspective analysis, as the immediate critical study of personal experiences during their continuance, is accepted as the ultimate source of all scientific knowledge of psychic life. Consciousness is so defined that the "subject-object problem", the Banquo's ghost of psychological study, is not permitted to vitiate the examination of mental facts as such. Psychological experiments are viewed as introspective observations under artificially controlled conditions; and an effort is made to distinguish between biological and psychological stud of the living human organism. The details of matter and method in this synoptic outline have been determined largely by two important considerations; first, the intellectual status and needs of the students for whose use it has been specifically prepared; and second, a well-defined theory as to the purpose of all instruction in elementary General Psychology, especially for students in State Normal Schools. In the State Normal School at Kirksville this course is open to students of the grade of the Freshman and Sophomore years of college study, and presupposes a fair knowledge of the elements of the physical and biological sciences with some acquaintance with modern laboratory work.
