Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Award finalist and debut novel by the bestselling author of The Dinner Party: "A readymade classic of the office-novel genre. . . . A truly affecting novel about work, trust, love, and loneliness." --Seattle Times No one knows us quite the same way as the men and women who sit beside us in department meetings and crowd the office refrigerator with their labeled yogurts. Every office is a family of sorts, and the ad agency Joshua Ferris brilliantly depicts in his debut novel is family at its strangest and best, coping with a business downturn in the time-honored way: through gossip, pranks, and increasingly frequent coffee breaks. With a demon's eye for the details that make life worth noticing, Joshua Ferris tells a true and funny story about survival in life's strangest environment--the one we pretend is normal five days a week.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus in Modern: European, History From Charlemagne, to the Present (800-1920) The present Syllabus lays little claim to originality, particularly in the appendices. It is an outgrowth of throe years experience with the Syllabus by Professor C. J. H. Haves, while at Columbia, and the Columbia University Press has kindly granted us permission to use such portions of this syllabus as we desired. Much use has been made in places of Professor Clarence Perkins' Syllabus on Modern European History, and valuable suggestions have been taken from the Syllabi of Professors Paetow, Burr, Thompson, Poster and Fay and others. The idea of outlining each days lesson as the unit is, we think, peculiar to the present Syllabus as are the suggestive questions at the end of each days assignment. The aim throughout has been to give point to the work of each day. Considerable pains have been spent upon the sections on note taking and the term essay, which in our estimation, arc among the most valuable things to be taught in the course. The purpose of this new' excursion into an old field is only another serious attempt to guide the bewildered college youth carefully through the maze of facts, essential and unessential, in his first college course in history. It is hoped that this manual may also prove of some assistance to overworked instructors in their overcrowded classes of the present day. Book On the Medieval Origins of the Modern State

Download or read book On the Medieval Origins of the Modern State written by Joseph R. Strayer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern state, however we conceive of it today, is based on a pattern that emerged in Europe in the period from 1100 to 1600. Inspired by a lifetime of teaching and research, On the Medieval Origins of the Modern State is a classic work on what is known about the early history of the European state. This short, clear book book explores the European state in its infancy, especially in institutional developments in the administration of justice and finance. Forewords from Charles Tilly and William Chester Jordan demonstrate the perennial importance of Joseph Strayer's book, and situate it within a contemporary context. Tilly demonstrates how Strayer’s work has set the agenda for a whole generation of historical analysts, not only in medieval history but also in the comparative study of state formation. William Chester Jordan's foreword examines the scholarly and pedagogical setting within which Strayer produced his book, and how this both enhanced its accessibility and informed its focus on peculiarly English and French accomplishments in early state formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are arguably the most important period in philosophy’s history, given that they set a new and broad foundation for subsequent philosophical thought. Over the last decade, however, discontent among instructors has grown with coursebooks’ unwavering focus on the era’s seven most well-known philosophers—all of them white and male—and on their exclusively metaphysical and epistemological concerns. While few dispute the centrality of these figures and the questions they raised, the modern era also included essential contributions from women—like Margaret Cavendish, Elisabeth of Bohemia, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Émilie Du Châtelet—as well as important non-white thinkers, such as Anton Wilhelm Amo, Julien Raimond, and Ottobah Cugoano. At the same time, there has been increasing recognition that moral and political philosophy, philosophy of the natural world, and philosophy of race—also vibrant areas of the seventeenth and ighteenth centuries—need to be better integrated with the standard coverage of metaphysics and epistemology. The second edition of A New Modern Philosophy: The Inclusive Anthology of Primary Sources addresses—in one volume—these valid criticisms. Weaving together multiple voices and all of the era’s vibrant areas of debate, this volume sets a new agenda for studying modern philosophy. It includes a wide range of readings from 36 thinkers, integrating essential works from all of the canonical writers along with the previously neglected philosophers. Editors Gwendolyn Marshall and Susanne Sreedhar provide an introduction for each author that sets the thinker in his or her time period as well as in the longer debates to which the thinker contributed. Study questions and suggestions for further reading conclude each chapter. At the end of the volume, in addition to a comprehensive subject index, the book includes 13 Syllabus Modules, which will help instructors use the book to easily set up different topically structured courses, such as "The Citizen and the State," "Mind and Matter," "Education," "Theories of Perception," or "Metaphysics of Causation." And an eResource offers a wide range of supplemental online resources, including essay assignments, exams, quizzes, student handouts, reading questions, and scholarly articles on teaching the history of philosophy. Key Updates to the Second Edition: Provides an expanded table of contents and the addition of new chapters on Galileo and Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz Expands readings and coverage in chapters on Spinoza and Descartes Offers improved Syllabus Modules at the back of the book Includes a new Student Introduction Updates bibliographic information
