Book excerpt: For an abelian category C, the Grothendieck group K(O)(C) of C is an abelian group which solves the universal problem of finding 'additive' maps of Obj C into abelian groups. The Whitehead group K(1) C is the abelian group which furnishes a 'universal determinant theory' for C. The dissertation conducts a survey of certain techniques useful in the study of these groups. The groups are treated in some generality in the first chapter, then the survey is restricted to group rings, i.e. to the case when C is the category of Z pi-modules or else the category of projective Z pi-modules, for finite groups pi. In this setting, the crucial (and most subtle) question seems to be that of determining the torsion of the Whitehead group, and this is chiefly what is done in the last two chapters. (Author).

Ringel (Bielefeld) in order to strengthen the interaction between the different re search areas in representation theory. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has given many research positions and fellowships for young algebraists enabling them to do research at their own uni versities or as visitors at well known research institutions in America, Australia, England and France. The whole project benefitted very much from an extensive exchange programme between German and American scientists sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by the National Science Foundation of the United States. This volume presents lectures given in a final conference and reports by members of the project. It is divided into two parts. The first part contains seven survey articles describing recent advances in different areas of representation theory. These articles do not only concentrate on the work done by the German research groups, but also inform on major developments of the subject at all. Difference sets are very important in combinatorial design theory and in commu nication engineering while designing sequences with good correlation properties.
