Book Computer Based Education in the Social Studies

Download or read book Computer Based Education in the Social Studies written by Lee Ehman and published by Social Studies Development Center. This book was released on 1987 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers have not revolutionized social studies curricula because so few teachers use them. But research does indicate that computers are flexible instructional tools that can assist in the development of attitudes, intellectual motivation, and inquiry skills. Social studies educators need to consider expanded computer use in their classrooms because computers assist in the preparation of students for effective participation in society. Teachers must understand how technology affects instruction, learning, and classroom environments, along with the types of effective instructional strategies that can be used to achieve specific goals. Educators should acquire the knowledge and experience needed to use computers by reviewing research relating to computer use in teaching and to instructional strategies. Information on research concerning the impact of computers on students, how computers change the way teachers' work, computers' effect on the training process, and computers' influence on the social studies curriculum is included. Necessary teacher competencies and appropriate instructional uses are explored through an analysis of teacher utility programs, databases, data analysis programs, and simulations. A 76-item bibliography concludes the document. (JHP)

Book Relationships of Selected Factors and the Level of Computer Use for Instructional Purposes by Technology Education Teachers in Ohio Public Schools

Download or read book Relationships of Selected Factors and the Level of Computer Use for Instructional Purposes by Technology Education Teachers in Ohio Public Schools written by Mohammed I. Isleem and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study determined the level of computer use for instructional purposes by technology education teachers in Ohio public schools. The study also investigated the relationships between the level of use and selected factors: expertise; access; attitude; support; and teacher characteristics. This study derived its theoretical framework from Rogers2 (1995) model of diffusion of innovations. A survey-correlation research design was used. A questionnaire was developed and mailed to all technology education teachers (N = 1170) in Ohio public schools in the 2002-2003 school year. Validity and reliability were established for the survey instrument. The return rate of the survey was 66%. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used. The findings of this study indicated that technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream computer uses such as word processing, e-mail, Internet, and classroom management. Strong positive correlation existed between the level of computer use and teachers2 perceived expertise and teachers2 perceived attitude toward computers as tools. In addition, moderate positive correlation existed between the level of use and teachers' perceived access to computers. Multiple regression analysis indicated a positive predictive value toward computer use with the demographic characteristics of instructional experience and modular instructional method, and a negative predictive value with age and urban geographic location. The independent variables that explain the greatest amount of variation in the level of computer use were in order of predictive value: teachers2 perceived expertise, attitude, and access. Technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream applications and low levels of computer use in specialized applications. These levels of use are slightly lower than the state levels. Those teachers that possess expertise are the ones who use the computer for instructional purposes. Positive attitudes toward computers as tools provide a starting point for adoption of computer use. To increase computer use, technology education teachers need to be given more training. In-service training needs to be a top priority. Pre-service programs should include more courses in using computers as tools for teaching and learning.

Book Computer Technology and Social Studies

Download or read book Computer Technology and Social Studies written by Alper Kesten and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has its rational basis in the proliferation of technology throughout every aspect of the contemporary world. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions, attitudes and knowledge of preservice teachers as they pertain to technology in social studies education. This investigation examines whether preservice teachers want to use computer technology in social studies, their motivations and how they plan to employ computer technology in social studies instruction. In addition, the factors that influence social studies preservice teachers' use of computer technology will be explored and described. The value of this study lies in three areas: 1) Growing interest technology's use in classrooms and limited research illustrate the importance of examining integration of information technology as teaching and learning tools on the attitudes and practices of preservice teachers. 2) Adding to the body of knowledge in preservice teacher education and information technology integration is important for methods courses. 3) And, the prescriptive findings of this research provide an effective model for integrating information technology in social studies teacher education. The book is addressed to researchers in education, teachers and preservice teachers, especially in social studies.
