Book Scholastic Football Coaches

Download or read book Scholastic Football Coaches written by Rich Rasmussen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to investigate the hiring procedures of high schools in the State of Washington regarding the employment of a head football coach. Two areas were examined: 1) the hiring procedures for head football coaches in Washington high schools (who makes the decision, how is the decision made); and 2) the job qualifications and characteristics schools look for when hiring a new head football coach. These areas were examined in an effort to determine if high school principals and athletic directors have differing opinions regarding the requirements and characteristics of the job. According to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) there are 385 public and private high schools in the state of Washington, 318 of which participate in interscholastic football (82.6%), 299 of which are public schools (94%). The sampling represented 50% of each classification and a total of 150 public schools. Of the 150 principals who were sent a survey, 86 responded (57.33%), while 102 (68%) of the 150 athletic directors responded. At least 50% of each classifications principals and athletic directors responded to this study. The analysis of the data was divided into four sections: (1) demographics, (2) qualifications of head football coaches, (3) factors and characteristics sought in a coach, and (4) the hiring process. Data was analyzed using means, standard deviations, percentages, and rankings. The results of this study revealed over 61% of the participating schools have had a head football coaching change within the past five years. Over 97% of the administrators indicated hiring a faculty coach was important compared to other staffing alternatives. The participating principals and athletic directors also reported nearly 90% of their current head football coaches were members of the faculty. An overwhelming majority of the administrators (80%) indicated personal appearance and fitness are important for a coach. It was also determined over 89% of the principals and athletic directors felt a candidate should serve an apprenticeship as an assistant coach prior to applying for a head coaching position, with nearly 80% indicating a minimum of three years experience as an assistant. Character and values (88%), leadership (80%) and communication skills (74%) were the three most sought after characteristics in a head coach by administrators. College or professional playing experience was considered the least important factor (5.5%) when considering a head coaching applicant. The four choices most often identified by the participating principals and athletic directors regarding who would serve on a hiring or interview committee were: the principal (90%, 84%), athletic director (98%, 99%), faculty and staff (74%, 74%), and parents (64%, 50%). The majority of principals and athletic directors agreed that the principal would be involved in the final decision to hire a candidate (48%), however, the AD's indicated they should be involved in the final decision 32% of the time to just over 16% of the principals who stated the AD should be involved. Over 24% of the respondents indicated the committee would make the final decision, therefore it would be safe to assume that the principal, athletic director, or both would play an intricate part in the decision based upon the previously mentioned data. Recommendations of this study were made for schools to recruit and retain qualified coaches. The researcher also made recommendations concerning: professional development, an adjusted salary structure for coaches, flexibility in the teaching schedule during the season, and assist in educating the community regarding the role of interscholastic athletics"--Document.

Book Call Me Coach

Download or read book Call Me Coach written by Paul F. Dietzel and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When LSU head football coach Paul Dietzel saw Billy Cannon field an Ole Miss punt on LSU's own eleven yard line on a stifling Halloween night in 1959, his shouts of "No, no, no!" turned to "Go, go, go!" as Cannon eluded tackler after tackler, sending fans in Tiger Stadium into a frenzy and earning himself that year's Heisman Trophy. Dietzel is probably best known for leading LSU to its first national championship the year before Cannon's legendary run, but his career in athletics also carried him to numerous posts across the country and put him in the company of some of the best coaching minds of all time. In Call Me Coach, Dietzel affectionately recalls his rich and varied life in college football. In 1948, Dietzel decided to forgo medical school at Columbia University to become the plebe football coach at West Point. As an assistant over the next few years, he worked with Bear Bryant at the University of Kentucky, Colonel Red Blaik and Vince Lombardi at West Point, and Sid Gillman at the University of Cincinnati. Taking the job of head coach at LSU in 1955, he reversed the Tigers' losing skid and -- using the wing-T formation and a revolutionary three-team substitution system incorporating the White Team, the Go Team, and the renowned Chinese Bandits -- crafted 1958's unbeaten championship season. The thirty-three-year-old Dietzel was voted National Coach of the Year by the widest margin ever. Back at West Point from 1961 to 1965, Dietzel rallied the Cadets to finally "beat Navy" and, as South Carolina's football coach and athletics director from 1966 to 1974, he took the Gamecocks to their first bowl game in twenty-five years and mandated the recruitment of black athletes in all sports programs. After twenty years as a head coach, with 109 wins and 95 losses at three schools and a postseason record of 11 victories and 3 defeats, Dietzel retired from coaching in 1974, later serving as athletics director at Indiana and LSU. Through Dietzel's eyes, readers glimpse college football during a simpler time but also see that many facets of the game -- including recruitment challenges, job insecurity, press relations, and fickle fans -- remain constant. Highlights among the book's many unforgettable anecdotes are a 1962 interview with Howard Cosell, discussion about West Point's football team with General Douglas MacArthur, and a rare disagreement with Bear Bryant during a staff meeting. Dietzel's recollections of his early and later years help complete the story of the man. In a warm raconteur's voice, he describes his impoverished childhood in Ohio, his own participation in high school and college sports, and his stint flying B-29 missions over Japan during World War II. His postretirement endeavors have included providing color commentary for TV, selling fudge, teaching skiing, and watercolor painting. Always at the top of Dietzel's priorities have been friends, family, and faith. Gratitude rings as a constant refrain in Call Me Coach, and sports enthusiasts everywhere will be grateful that Dietzel has shared these recollections of his remarkable life.

Book excerpt: Every Saturday in the autumn, millions of Americans watch college football. They visit leafy campuses, tailgate with friends, and then sit down to enjoy one of the country's oldest and most beloved sporting traditions. They also witness one of the country's most visible tableaus of racial inequity. Some 120 colleges and universities field teams in the NCAA's top tier of the sport, known as the Football Bowl Subdivision. But only a small fraction of those teams are coached by African-Americans or other minorities. Yet there seems to be little focus on this issue in today's society, even from the African-American community itself. Why is it that the National Football League has advanced so much farther in giving opportunities to minority coaches? Dr. Fitzgerald Hill, along with award-winning sportswriter, Mark Purdy, attack the racial dynamics of the important Crackback syndrome, in which minority coaches are led to believe they actually do have a fair chance at every job opening-only to be blindsided at the last minute by hidden forces that undermine their dreams. There is hope for the future, but first we have to be willing to look closely at a sensitive topic. That is why Crackback is necessary for everyone, especially college football fans-of any color or team.

Download or read book No Excuses written by Bob Stoops and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the legendary Oklahoma coach, a candid and inspiring memoir. When Bob Stoops took over as football coach in 1999, the Oklahoma Sooners were in disarray with back-to-back losing seasons. But in just two years' time, Stoops achieved the seemingly impossible: winning a national championship and returning the struggling Sooners to their powerhouse status, churning out NFL talent, Heisman Trophy winners and conference championships, bowl wins and national title runs on a regular basis. During his 18 seasons at OU, his record was a remarkable 190-48. At only age 56, at the peak of his career, he stunned the college football world by walking away. For the first time, Bob opens up about his career alongside the evolution of the game itself. From his unlikely emergence as a star player at the University of Iowa, to his coaching apprenticeships under giants like Hayden Fry, Bill Snyder, and Steve Spurrier, Stoops recounts how the game he fell in love with as a boy has evolved into a billion-dollar business often compromised by recruiting wars, aggressive agents, overzealous boosters and alumni, and the emergence of the CEO head coach rather than mentor and teacher. Bob holds nothing back while explaining why it was time to step away from the game-and players-he still loves. Told with a rare combination of sincerity, vulnerability, and pure heart, No Excuses is both an engaging and eye-opening football memoir and an unprecedented portrait of a coach of one of the greatest legacy programs in the history of the college game.

Book Head Ball Coach

Download or read book Head Ball Coach written by Steve Spurrier and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback with a new afterword, the New York Times bestseller by college football's most colorful, endearing, and successful pioneer, Steve Spurrier, in which he shares his story of a life in football--from growing up in Tennessee to winning the Heisman Trophy to playing and coaching in the pros to leading the Florida Gators to six SEC Championships and a National Championship to elevating the South Carolina program to new heights--and coaching like nobody else. He's been called brash, cocky, arrogant, pompous, egotistical, and hilarious, but mostly he's known as the Head Ball Coach, a self-ordained term introduced to the lexicon of football by none other than the man himself, Steve Spurrier. He is the only coach who can claim to be the winningest coach at two different SEC schools and the only person who has won both the Heisman Trophy as a player and a National Championship as a coach. Or who has won a Heisman and coached a Heisman winner. From the beginning, Spurrier didn't want to sound like other coaches, dress like other coaches, and, especially, coach like other coaches. As a controversial football pioneer, he ushered in a different style of leadership and play. Spurrier's press conferences were glorious--he refused to lapse into coachspeak and was always entertaining, although he took his football very seriously. He was known for his fierce competitiveness, roaming up and down the sidelines, often throwing his signature visor to the ground in disgust. In his memoir, Spurrier talks for the first time about the circumstances under which he unexpectedly became a coach and why he resigned at South Carolina. He explains his unique style, the difference between winners and losers, his relationship with the media, why he follows the wisdom of ancient philosophers and warriors, his affinity for everything taught by John Wooden, and the reasons behind his relaxed regimen for living well. Spurrier, as always, speaks candidly, bringing together his thoughts about his words, actions, and achievements, while telling countless wonderful anecdotes.

Book The Fortier Years

Download or read book The Fortier Years written by Larry Scott and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ross Fortier signed on as head football coach at Moorhead State College in 1970, there was little reason to believe he could transform the Dragons into a major player on the regional and national level. It didn't take Fortier long to begin collecting conference titles and advancing to post-season play. That Moorhead State became a certified NAIA stronghold by doing football the right way is reason enough for celebrating, but it was his guidance and inspiration that led a legion of former players to a rich variety of post-collegiate careers. They became doctors and lawyers, high school, college and professional coaches, business leaders and CEOs, national talk show hosts, professional wrestlers, high school principals and even college presidents. They followed his lead, remembered many of the lessons football taught and dared to dream big. That is arguably Fortier's greatest legacy.
