Book A Survey of the Benthic Macroinvertebrates of the Yellow River

Download or read book A Survey of the Benthic Macroinvertebrates of the Yellow River written by Scott D. Prill and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A benthic macroinvertebrate survey was conducted at six sampling locations on the Yellow River in May 1981. Densities at the sampling sites paralleled those of the 1978 survey, with the greatest densities collected in the class B cold water segment of the river. Substantially lower densities were obtained at the other collecting s i t e s in the river. The dominant organisms collected belonged to the family Chironomidae, accounting for approximately 40% of the total density. Several species of mayfly nymphs (i .e. Baetis flavistriga, Ephemerella aurivilli, and Stenonema mediopunctatum) and caddisfly larvae (i .e. Cheumatopsyche sp., Symphitopsyche bifida and S. slossonae) were also common in the collections. The densities, number of taxa and types of benthic macroinvertebrates collected were indicative of generally good, long term water quality in the Yellow River. Two areas of suspected water quality degradation occurred in the Yellow River at Volney and in Hickory Creek, a tributary to Yellow River.

Book excerpt: Sediment dynamics in fluvial systems is of great ecological, economic and human-health-related significance worldwide. Appropriate management strategies are therefore needed to limit maintenance costs as well as minimize potential hazards to the aquatic and adjacent environments. Human intervention, ranging from nutrient/pollutant release to physical modifications, has a large impact on sediment quantity and quality and thus on river morphology as well as on ecological functioning. Truly understanding sediment dynamics requires as a consequence a multidisciplinary approach.River Sedimentation contains the peer-reviewed scientific contributions presented at the 13th International Symposium on River Sedimentation (ISRS 2016, Stuttgart, Germany, 19-22 September 2016), and includes recent accomplishments in theoretical developments, numerical modelling, experimental laboratory work, field investigations and monitoring as well as management methodologies.

Book River Dynamics and Integrated River Management

Download or read book River Dynamics and Integrated River Management written by Zhao-Yin Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "River Dynamics and Integrated River Management” provides comprehensive information on rivers for integrated management, including natural processes, stresses resulting from human activities, and restoration of various parts of the river basin, including the watershed, mountain streams, alluvial rivers, estuaries, and natural and man-made lakes. Essential concepts, traditional and modern, such as river patterns, step-pool systems, vegetation-erosion charts, habitat diversity, and flushing times of bays, are clearly defined physically and explained with figures and pictures. Detailed mathematics and rigorous analyses are avoided so as to facilitate a holistic view of the subject of integrated river management. Researchers can easily familiarize themselves with the science of river management in its widest sense with the impressive pictures and examples in this book. Dr. Zhaoyin Wang is a professor at the Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Tsinghua University, China. Dr. Joseph H.W. Lee is a Chair Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, China. Dr. Charles S. Melching is a Professor at the College of Engineering, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, USA.

Book Tropical and Sub Tropical Reservoir Limnology in China

Download or read book Tropical and Sub Tropical Reservoir Limnology in China written by Bo-Ping Han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reservoirs are specific aquatic ecosystems and have complex behaviors of both natural lakes and rivers, regulated significantly by their functions such as flood controlling, hydropower generation, irrigation and fishery. This volume offers a general description of reservoir limnology in tropical and subtropical China. It functions as a window opening to all the aquatic scientists with a main focus on reservoirs in southern China and at the same time also covering several important, large reservoirs such as the Three Gorge Reservoir and Danjiangko Reservoir. Topics discussed are zooplankton, phytoplankton and zoobenthos communities, cyanobateria, nutrient budget, sediments, biogeochemical cycling of mercury, fishery and eutrophication.
