Download or read book The Ad lie Penguin written by David Ainley and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adélie penguin is one of the best-studied birds in the world and is the subject of research programs from a dozen nations interested in monitoring changes in the environment and the food webs of the Southern Ocean. This species' population has been changing dramatically over the past few decades coincident with a general warming of the maritime portion of Antarctica. When the sea-ice is seen to decline so does the population of Adélie penguins. Further south, however, the population is increasing. This book summarizes our present ecological knowledge of this polar seabird. In so doing, David Ainley describes the ecological factors important to its life history and details the mechanisms by which it is responding to climate change. The author also chronicles the history of research on Adélie penguins, beginning with the heroic expeditions at the beginning of the twentieth century. Weaving together history, ecology, natural history, and written accounts from the earliest Antarctic naturalists into a fascinating account of this charismatic bird, The Adélie Penguin provides a foundation upon which future ornithological research and environmental monitoring can be based. It is a model for investigations into the effect of climate change on a particular species. The book also contains many fine illustrations from the accomplished illustrator Lucia deLeiris and photographs by the author.

Book Invasive Species in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Invasive Species in the Pacific Northwest written by P. Dee Boersma and published by Ewha Womans University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. government defines invasive species as "an alien species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health." Invasive Species in the Pacific Northwest describes these species, how they got here, and the effects of their invasions on the region's environment. Each of 108 invasive species of fish, plants, invertebrates, mammals, and birds -- including earthworms, domestic cats and pigs, blackberries, European fruit flies, Japanese eelgrass, Mediterranean mussels, rats, and terrestrial mollusks -- is described in a 2-page spread that includes a full-color photograph of the species, a map showing the species' presence in the region, plus: -- Impact on communities and native species -- Control methods and management -- Life histories and species overview -- History of invasiveness Included are suggestions to help reduce the spread of invasive species; habitat preferences of Pacific Northwest invasive species; the World Conservation Union (ICUN) list of the world's 100 most invasive alien species; and a questionnaire designed to evaluate ecological impact and invasive potential. Invasive species have been recognized as an environmental issue since Charles Darwin's voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle. Editors P. D. Boersma, S. E. Reichard, and A. N. Van Buren explore the intentional and accidental introductions of invasive species. Whether these species were deliberately brought to the Northwest for agricultural, horticultural, aquacultural, or hunting and fishing purposes, or accidentally introduced as stowaways and contaminants, knowledge about them is integral to the protection of our environment.

Download or read book Industrial Biofouling written by James Walker and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2000-10-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofouling is a persistent problem for many industries including the water utility services, industrial water systems and the food and beverage industry. Industrial Biofouling provides a comprehensive and informative guide to biofouling in these particular industries. Taking a systematic and novel approach, the book describes the problems caused by biofouling, how and what to use to detect it and, ultimately, how to control it. Relevant examples and case studies are used to illustrate the practical problems faced by each industry. Written by international experts in the field, this book will be essential reading for industrialists, especially those designing water systems, water distribution managers, process water engineers, environmental microbiologists, food scientists, biomaterials scientists and those responsible for public health and reduction of cross contamination within the food industry. It will also be an excellent reference source for graduates and postgraduates studying biofilms.

Download or read book Organotin written by M.A. Champ and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: single toxicant before it, yet one that has now been brought under effective control-at least in estuaries and the nearshore environment. The problem with TBT and its cause was first recognized in France, then in the United Kingdom and the United States of America; and in these and other countries legislation is now in place (see Abel, Chapter 2; Champ and Wade, Chapter 3), but in many countries the hazard is only now being identified. This volume has the important function of making available to all a summary of the results of work on TBT and the main conclusions. It will help to minimize the duplication of research and speed the introduction of legislation around the world to control organotin pollution. It is the more valuable because research on TBT has often been published in less accessible journals and symposium proceedings. This volume brings together accounts of these findings by the major contributors to the TBT story, providing the most comprehensive account to date. The TBT problem has proved to be instructive in a number of different ways beyond the bounds of the specific issue (Stebbing, 1985). Most important is that TBT can be seen as a challenge to monitoring systems for nearshore waters, by which it can be judged how effective monitoring has been in fulfilling its purpose, and what improvements should be made. Most instructive was the time it took to bring TBT under control.
