Book A Short History of Structural Linguistics

Download or read book A Short History of Structural Linguistics written by Peter Hugoe Matthews and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-23 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise history of structural linguistics charts its development from the 1870s to the present day. It explains what structuralism was and why its ideas are still central today. For structuralists a language is a self-contained and tightly organised system whose history is of changes from one state of the system to another. This idea has its origin in the nineteenth century and was developed in the twentieth by Saussure and his followers, including the school of Bloomfield in the United States. Through the work of Chomsky, especially, it is still very influential. Matthews examines the beginnings of structuralism and analyses the vital role played in it by the study of sound systems and the problems of how systems change. He discusses theories of the overall structure of a language, the 'Chomskyan revolution' in the 1950s, and the structuralist theories of meaning.

Book Structural Linguistics and Human Communication

Download or read book Structural Linguistics and Human Communication written by Bertil Malmberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The point of departure of this general survey of modern structural linguistics is the place of language in human relations. Linguistics will consequently be understood as a science of communication. My book is not intended as an elementary handbook. The readers are supposed to be in the first place advanced students of linguistics and phonetics and of neighbouring fields where a real awareness of linguistic methods and problems is essential (such as psychology, phoniatrics, speech therapy, language teaching, communication engineering). The book may, however, be of some value also for the general reader who is interested in language, in language learning, or in communication processes. It might finally serve as an introduction to structural theories and practice for those linguists of traditional orientation who would like to make contact with the new trends in the study of language. It is self-evident that, under such circumstances, any reader will find certain chapters in this book rather complicated, others irritatingly elementary. This is, however, unavoidable in a work whose aim is to cover a vast field of knowledge and to offer the reader a synthesis of what appears at first sight to be widely disparate facts and phenomena. Many of the facts brought together here may, regarded superficially, seem to have few or no mutual connections. They can, nevertheless, be combined into a wide humanistic and scientific unity within which numerous lines of relationship bind together physical and psychic, individual and social phenomena.

Book 200 Years of Syntax

Download or read book 200 Years of Syntax written by Giorgio Graffi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-04-11 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues convincingly against the widespread opinion that very few syntactic studies were carried out before the 1950s. Relying on the detailed analysis of a large amount of original sources, it shows that syntactic matters were in fact carefully investigated throughout both the 19th century and during the first half of the 20th century. Moreover, it illustrates how the enormous development of syntactic research in the last fifty years has already condemned even several recent ideas and analyses to oblivion, and deeply influenced current research programs. The wealth of research undertaken over the last two centuries is presented here in a systematic way, taking as its starting point the relationship of syntax with psychology throughout this period. The critical ideas expressed in the text are based on a detailed illustration of the different syntactic models and analyses rather than on the polemics between the different schools.

Book Linguistic Variation in Research Articles

Download or read book Linguistic Variation in Research Articles written by Bethany Gray and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistic Variation in Research Articles investigates the linguistic characteristics of academic research articles, going beyond a traditional analysis of the generically-defined research article to take into account varied realizations of research articles within and across disciplines. It combines corpus-based analyses of 70+ linguistic features with analyses of the situational, or non-linguistic, characteristics of the Academic Journal Registers Corpus: 270 research articles from 6 diverse disciplines (philosophy, history, political science, applied linguistics, biology, physics) and representing three sub-registers (theoretical, quantitative, and qualitative research). Comprehensive analyses include a lexical/grammatical survey, an exploration of structural complexity, and a Multi-Dimensional analysis, all interpreted relative to the situational analysis of the corpus. The finding that linguistic variation in research articles does not occur along a single parameter like discipline is discussed relative to our understanding of disciplinary practices, the multidimensional nature of variation in research articles, and resulting methodological considerations for corpus studies of disciplinary writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Gospels of the NT are strategic narratives of proclamation. The primary focus of these narratives is christological. Miracle stories play a central role in this narrative process and in its resulting christological portrait. Strategies of interpretation must be consciously shaped to highlight this narrative strategy and its christological focus. The first three statements now seem self-evident, yet these conclusions were reached relatively late in the history of research. The fourth contention lies at the center of recent methodological debate in Gospel studies. This analysis will re-evaluate the miracle traditions through a methodology designed to highlight the narrative identity and the christological focus of the Gospel of Mark. The primary goal of this analysis is reconsideration of the role played by miracles stories in the characterization of Jesus. As a secondary goal this analysis will address the ongoing question of which methodological approaches best contribute to the aims of NT studies."--
