Pulse compression is a method which combines the high energy of a longer pulse width with the high resolution of a narrow pulse width. The major aspects that are considered for a pulse compression technique are signal to sidelobe ratio (SSR) performance, noise performance and Doppler shift performance. Matched filtering of biphase coded radar signals create unwanted sidelobes which may mask important information. The adaptive filtering techniques like Least Mean Square (LMS), Recursive Least Squares (RLS), and modified RLS algorithms are used for pulse radar detection and the results are compared. In this thesis, a novel approach for pulse compression using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is proposed. The 13-bit and 35-bit barker codes are used as signal codes to RNN and results are compared with Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) network. RNN yields better signal-to-sidelobe ratio (SSR), error convergence speed, noise performance, range resolution ability and Doppler shift performance than neural network (NN) and some traditional algorithms like auto correlation function(ACF) algorithm. But the SSR obtained from RNN is less for most of the applications. Hence a Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network is implemented which yields better convergence speed, higher SSRs in adverse situations of noise and better robustness in Doppler shift tolerance than MLP and ACF algorithm. There is a scope of further improvement in performance in terms of SSR, error convergence speed, and Doppler shift. A novel approach using Recurrent RBF is proposed for pulse radar detection, and the results are compared with RBF, MLP and ACF. Biphase codes, namely barker codes are used as inputs to all these neural networks. The disadvantages of biphase codes include high sidelobes and poor Doppler tolerance. The Golay complementary codes have zero sidelobes but they ar.

This short course has been presented an nually at Georgia Tech since 1969, and a very comprehensive set of course notes has evolved during that seventeen year period. The 1986 edition of these notes ran to 22 chapters, and all of the authors involved, except Mr. Barrett, were full time members of the Georgia Tech research faculty. After considerable encouragement from various persons at the university and within the radar community, we undertook the task of editing the course notes for formal publication. The contents of the book that ensued tend to be practical in nature, since each contributing author is a practicing engineer or scientist and each was selected to write on a topic embraced by his area(s) of expertise. Prime examples are Chaps. 2, 5, and 10, which were authored by E. F. Knott, G. W. Ewell, and N. C. Currie, respectively. Each of these three researchers is rec ognized in the radar community as an expert in the technical area that his chap ter addresses, and each had already authored and published a major book on his subject. Several other contributing authors, including Dr. Bodnar, Mr. Bruder, Mr. Corriher, Dr. Reedy, Dr. Trebits, and Mr. Scheer, also have major book publications to their credit.

Book excerpt: Pulse compression provides increased detectability by increasing the average transmitted power. This is done by increasing the transmitted pulsewidth instead of the peak power. The technique provides economic advantages by reducing the peak-to-average power ratio. Radar resolution is maintained by compressing the transmitted pulse into a much narrower pulse of nearly arbitrary width. This compression effect is achieved by sweeping the transmit frequency, either linearly or nonlinearly. A nonlinear FM waveform offers a higher signal-to-noise ratio and a narrower occupied bandwidth than linear FM, and would be the logical choice for air traffic control radars. The pulse waveform should be chosen to operate the klystron at its design peak power and rated average power simultaneously. The pulse compression system showed superior performance both over clutter and in the clear. The only possibly deleterious effect of the pulse compression system was the displaying of range sidelobes on strong moving targets. Spectral calculations and measurements show the pulse compression spectral energy concentrated near the carrier. The envelope of the pulse compression spectrum falls below the envelope of a conventional spectrum for frequencies removed from the carrier, even though the 'shoulders' of the pulse compression spectrum are wider. Inversion of sweep sense provides another dimension of interference discrimination not available to conventional radars. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Weather radar is a vital instrument for observing the atmosphere to help provide weather forecasts and issue weather warnings to the public. The current Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) system provides Doppler radar coverage to most regions of the United States (NRC, 1995). This network was designed in the mid 1980s and deployed in the 1990s as part of the National Weather Service (NWS) modernization (NRC, 1999). Since the initial design phase of the NEXRAD program, considerable advances have been made in radar technologies and in the use of weather radar for monitoring and prediction. The development of new technologies provides the motivation for appraising the status of the current weather radar system and identifying the most promising approaches for the development of its eventual replacement. The charge to the committee was to determine the state of knowledge regarding ground-based weather surveillance radar technology and identify the most promising approaches for the design of the replacement for the present Doppler Weather Radar. This report presents a first look at potential approaches for future upgrades to or replacements of the current weather radar system. The need, and schedule, for replacing the current system has not been established, but the committee used the briefings and deliberations to assess how the current system satisfies the current and emerging needs of the operational and research communities and identified potential system upgrades for providing improved weather forecasts and warnings. The time scale for any total replacement of the system (20- to 30-year time horizon) precluded detailed investigation of the designs and cost structures associated with any new weather radar system. The committee instead noted technologies that could provide improvements over the capabilities of the evolving NEXRAD system and recommends more detailed investigation and evaluation of several of these technologies. In the course of its deliberations, the committee developed a sense that the processes by which the eventual replacement radar system is developed and deployed could be as significant as the specific technologies adopted. Consequently, some of the committee's recommendations deal with such procedural issues.
