The period 1945 to 1965 has been taken as the scope of this study. Only solo organ music has been selected, although a considerable quantity of music for organ and other instruments exists. Determining the stylistic trends present in the organ literature involved has necessitated an analytical search into organ music of the following countries: Canada, England, France, Germany, Latin America, and the United States. The greatest activity in organ music since 1945 has occurred in Germany. Thus, this study emphasizes German composers more than any other. Musical analysis in this study stresses compositional unifying devices and emphasizes unusual rather than common technical elements. The author avoids bar-by-bar analysis but stresses a survey of compositional practices. If a germ motive or Grundgestalt occurs, the writer determines its importance to the formal and stylistic characteristics of the music. Special attention has been given to permutation, interversion, polyharmonic and polychordal functions, as well as pandiatonic, polymodal, and polytonal textures. Unusual features of registration have been discussed, along with the composer's idiomatic treatment of the organ. Text painting has been mentioned wherever present. The writer has found that a composer's style is the result of technical and formal compositional devices, in the same way that a writer's style is the result of his use of elements such as grammar and diction. Thus, form and style are inseparable, but one is the result of the other. Background influences have led to the study's organization, having shown that this music embraces three stylistic divisions: neo-Baroque, neo-Romantic, and Syncretistic. The first two categories include, respectively, the eclectic practices of composers who have followed eighteenth-century German and nineteenth-century French influences, while the third category represents composers who have emulated more advanced twentieth-century composers. The term Syncretistic describes the practices of composers who use various serial techniques in styles that avoid eclecticism and neoclassicism. The author avoids entitling the third category serial, for serial indicates procedure rather than style. The composers chosen are representatives of the three stylistic categories in question. They were selected only after investigating many other composers. Their selection does not imply musical evaluations. These composers have not received proper recognition and their music has been performed very seldom. The author has not discussed music already well-known. The composers and compositions are now given, as they appear in the three chapter divisions: neo-Baroque works: Joseph Ahrens, Triptychon uber B-A-C-H; Richard Arnell, Second Sonata; Willy Burkhard, Choral-Triptychon; Harald Genzmer, 1963 Sonata; Alberto Ginastera, Toccata, Villancico, y Fuga; Ernst Pepping, Three Fugues on B-A-C-H; Hermann Schroeder, Veni Creator Spiritus; Gerhard Wuensch, Sonata Breve. Neo-Romantic: Samuel Adler, Toccata-RecitationPostlude; Henk Badings, Prelude and Fugue IV; Jeanne Demessieux, Triptyque; Harald Genzmer, Tripartita in F; Otto Luening, Fantasia; Jan Mul, Choral Joyeux; Daniel Pinkham, Suite. Syncretistic works: Joseph Ahrens, Verwandlungen I; Helmut Bornefeld, 1955 Partita; Johann David, Partita on B-A-C-H; Siegfried Reda, Preludium-Fuge-Quadruplum, 1960 Senate, and Triptychon. This investigation has revealed that organ music of the middle sixties has not yet embraced experimentalism in aleatory and electronics, characteristic of contemporary music in other fields. The current stylistic streams in organ music depart widely from current activities in other music. Thus, this study should be of importance to those interested in contemporary trends and of special value to those who perform and teach organ music. This study also indicates a vast area still unexplored by organ composers, including aleatory, experimental activities of many types, and ethnic musical sources.

Excerpt: "All writers attribute the origin of the organ to that simplest as well as most ancient of musical instruments, called by the Greeks the "pipes of Pan,"—Pan, in the ancient mythology, being the god of the woods and groves. It consisted of a few hollow reeds of various lengths, securely bound together, and blown by the lips. We still occasionally see and hear this instrument in our streets, performed upon by those nomadic "sons of art," the organ-grinders. The performer being obliged to move his head continually from side to side, an unpleasant and fatiguing operation, soon led to an attempt to blow these tubes artificially. From this resulted the placing of the pipes upon a small wind-chest, and the addition of a primitive bellows, the whole being easily carried and operated by one performer. Of particular value in the establishment of this historical fact was the discovery, in Syria, among some ancient ruins, of a sculptured figure playing on such an instrument. Although much mutilated, all the more important parts were still intact. This interesting relic was brought to England about the year 1853."

Book excerpt: This dissertation provides the first biographical overview and annotated catalog of the organ music of Alsatian-American organist and composer René Louis Becker. Born and educated in Strasbourg, Alsace, Becker emigrated to the United States in 1904 and remained active as a composer and church musician for the next 50 years. in addition to providing sources for his biographical information, documentation of the specific organs with which Becker was professionally associated is included for the purpose of evaluating possible dates of composition of his undated organ works as well as for consideration of organ registrations when performing his works. Primary sources include newspaper clippings, personal correspondence, family scrapbooks, organ archives, and both published and unpublished manuscripts. Study of these manuscripts, including rediscovery of more than fifty works of Becker's which were previously published in the early 1900s, present an opportunity to introduce a large new body of sophisticated repertoire from a distinguished and accomplished musician to the field of organ music. Becker composed more than 180 individual works for the organ, over half of which remain in manuscript and which were completely unknown since even before his death in 1956. Becker's complete known oeuvre for organ includes 34 marches, 15 toccatas, three published large-scale sonatas as well as numerous works styled as preludes, postludes, finales, chansons, fantasies, fugues, and multiple small-scale compositions. After a brief biography and an overview of Becker's compositional style and complete extant organ works, an introduction to his largest-scale work for the organ, the five-movement First Sonata in G, op. 40, is given. This is followed by an illustration of the overt stylistic influences present in the first two movements of that sonata with extensive musical examples, serving to establish Becker as one of the inheritors of the romantic tradition of the large-scale organ sonata and as a 20th century composer of note.

Best and William Spark. With the expansion of the instrument’s capabilities came an opportunity for organist-composers to consider the repertoire anew with many factors reinforcing a desire to elevate the literature to new heights. This study begins by examining the legacy of the keyboard sonata in Britain and especially the pedagogical lineage that was to be seen through Mendelssohn and ultimately the early organ sonatas. The abiding influence of William Crotch’s lectures are studied to illuminate how a culture of conservatism emboldened the organist-composers towards compositions that were seen to represent the ideals of the Classical era but in a contemporary vein. The veneration of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven is then examined as composers wrote "portfolio" sonatas, each with a movement in a contrasting style to exhibit their compositional prowess while providing repertoire for the novice and connoisseur alike. Finally the volume considers how the British organist-composers who studied at the Leipzig Conservatorium had a direct bearing on the furtherance of an organ culture at home that in turn set the ground for the seminal work in the genre, Elgar’s Sonata of 1895.
