Book Analysis of Immigrant Entrepreneurship in the United States

Download or read book Analysis of Immigrant Entrepreneurship in the United States written by Bayogar Anthony McCritty (Sr.) and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development of entrepreneurship has been critical to the immigrant community in the United States and is often seen as an alternative to unemployment and poverty. Immigrant entrepreneurship is still a vital aspect of the United States economy and a means for several immigrant groups' economic progress. The United States has the world's largest immigrant population; almost all countries in the world are represented, however African immigrants to the United States comprise a large portion of that population. The past two decades have experienced an increase in the number of Liberian immigrant entrepreneurs in the United States. Immigrant entrepreneurs face many challenges in developing a new business venture in their host countries, such as searching for resources outside of their immediate connections, accessing non-market resources, and transferring resources through transactions visible in all environments. This research is an application of a qualitative case study with the primary objective of analyzing Liberian immigrant entrepreneurship in the United States through the Liberian Business Association (LIBA) in the diaspora. It provides an in-depth explanation and understanding of the LIBA organization's development and contribution to current and future Liberian immigrant entrepreneurs. Analysis outlines LIBA related to its organizational development as motivation, inspiration, and guidance for current and future immigrant entrepreneurs across the diaspora.

Book Exploring the Experiences of Liberian Immigrant Entrepreneurs in Twin Cities Area of Minnesota

Download or read book Exploring the Experiences of Liberian Immigrant Entrepreneurs in Twin Cities Area of Minnesota written by Harry Papa Mason and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers extensively have explored immigrant entrepreneurship in several contexts and with various ethnic immigrant populations across the United States. Indisputably, entrepreneurial opportunities across the United States have served as an opportunistic conduit for immigrants to start, manage and operate their business ventures in the context of the American Dream. The resultant immigrant entrepreneurial ventures have seen a marked improvement in the socioeconomic status of immigrant entrepreneurs, despite some challenges. Anecdotal evidence satiated with ethnic Liberian immigrant entrepreneurship in the United States represents a gap in the current literature. The crux of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the "experience of entrepreneurship" from the perspective of Liberian immigrant entrepreneurs in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. The principal investigator employed instrumentation of semistructured, in-depth Zoom-video interviews to generate rich and detailed descriptions from eleven registered members of the Minnesota-based Liberian Business Association (LIBA). Thematic analysis of the interview data encompassed eight essential themes. They include (1) perspectives, constructs, and meanings of "experience of entrepreneurship"; (2) impact of prior work experience and education on business ownership; (3) reasons/factors influencing Liberian immigrant entrepreneurship; (4) impact of key success factors and profitability on business sustainability; (5) impact of self-entrepreneurial activity on wellbeing and work-life balance; (6) impact of locational advantage on entrepreneurial activity and performance; (7) Liberian immigrant entrepreneurial challenges to business startups; and (8) impact of LIBA on Liberian immigrant entrepreneurial climate. The study results suggest that the participants discovered and leveraged current Twin Cities-based entrepreneurial opportunities for their own entrepreneurial self-employment, with intentionality to contribute economically to the local economy of the Twin Cities via job creation and to relish independence, freedom, pride and fulfillment, social mobility, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and improved quality of life in the secondary labor market as opposed to the primary labor market, where they complained about prejudice and discrimination, among others. From the eight themes that emerged, all the participants emphasized control over their own time as the most significant resource available to perform or handle multitasking that engenders flexibility and the comfort of work-life balance. Thus, the challenge to policymakers is to formulate appropriate policies to develop and strengthen immigrant entrepreneurship via immigrant-based economic institutions, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted the traditional entrepreneurial landscape. Further research to explore the "experience of entrepreneurship" from the viewpoint of non-LIBA members or other Liberian immigrant entrepreneurs could provide some new perspectives and insights about the phenomenon under study.

Book Entrepreneurship in Africa

Download or read book Entrepreneurship in Africa written by David S. Fick and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-03-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the entrepreneurs who have achieved success, wealth, and recognition in their African homelands, and how did they do it? Entrepreneur Dave Fick interviewed several hundred women and men who were willing to assume risks, often spectacular ones, for personal economic gain—but who did it legally, ethically, and who are now giving back to their nations and societies at least as much as they received. They speak openly of their hardships and failures, what they did right and what they did wrong, and their accounts are remarkable. We gain insight into the way business must be done under harsh political and economic circumstances, but we also learn unusual techniques and strategies that others in more favorable milieus can use to accomplish similar feats. With commentaries from notable scholars and other businesspeople and with Fick's own first-hand onsite observations, the book is a self-educating colloquium, a collection of personal meetings, accounts, letters, emails and telephone calls between Fick, his counterparts in Africa, and others around the world. It is also an attempt to encourage a dialogue that will accelerate the exchange and spread of knowledge and ideas, and a way to help the people of Africa build a peaceful and better society for themselves and the world.
