  • Author : James M. Richards

Download or read book Birds of Nunavut written by James M. Richards and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nunavut is a land of islands, encompassing some of the most remote places on Earth. It is also home to some of the world’s most fascinating bird species. The windswept tundra, rocky shorelines, and icy waters of this thinly populated land are integral to the survival of numerous breeding and non-breeding birds, including the colourful King Eider, the stately Snowy Owl, the spritely Snow Bunting, and the globe-spanning Northern Wheatear. Birds of Nunavut is the first complete survey of every species known to occur in the territory. It is co-written by a team of eighteen experts who have conducted a combined total of 300 seasons of fieldwork in Nunavut. They document 295 species of birds (of which 145 are known to breed in the territory), presenting a wealth of information on identification, distribution, ecology, behaviour, and conservation. Lavishly illustrated with over 800 colour photographs and 155 maps, it is a visually stunning reference work on the birds that live in and visit Nunavut.

Book Declines in Canadian Amphibian Populations

Download or read book Declines in Canadian Amphibian Populations written by Christine Annette Bishop and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, a workshop was held to examine the data related to declines in Canadian amphibian populations and associated causes and, in particular, to develop a protocol to address the issue. Participants were invited to present reports on the current status of knowledge on amphibians in Canada, particularly species that appear to be threatened. Summaries of this information are presented in this report, along with the factors that may be contributing to fluctuations in amphibian populations. Methodologies and tribulations involved in accurately assessing amphibian population size and recruitment are given. A framework for environmental monitoring was presented and the data needed, both intensive and extensive, was discussed.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Razorbill Alca torda is one of the rarest breeding auks in North America. A number of surveys have been conducted at breeding colonies in recent years to estimate population size and trends. Summarizing the available data, we estimate that approximately 38 000 pairs of Razorbills currently breed in eastern North America. The largest concentrations of Razorbills breed on the Quebec North Shore and in coastal southern Labrador; smaller numbers breed in the Quebec portion of the gulf and estuary of the St. Lawrence River, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and St. Pierre and Miquelon. Book Population Modelling and Management of Snow Geese

Download or read book Population Modelling and Management of Snow Geese written by H. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document consists of three separate but related papers. The objective of the first is to improve managerial understanding of the impact of spring hunting by indigenous peoples in northern Canada. It is an analysis of the relative impact of hunting in the spring, compared with the conventional hunting seasons in fall and winter. In the second paper, Cooke et al. comments on the model and the choice of parameters that was used in a paper by Rockwell et al., and which provided the underpinning for the argument in that paper that a great increase in the hunting kill of Snow Geese was required to reverse the rapid increase in the numbers of those geese. In the third paper, Rockwell and Ankney counter Cooke's claims.
