Book excerpt: The Preservation of History in Fairfax County, Virginia presents an overview of one urban county's efforts to retain its historic and archaeological sites in the face of increasing developmental pressures during the past thirty-five years. It provides a thorough review of historical development in the county as well as practical guidance on how decisions were developed. Written by two distinguished historians, Ross and Nan Netherton, who were part of the process from the beginning, this study presents a perspective which only familiarity with its successes and failures can bestow. Book excerpt: "The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is planning to undertake a 5.6-mile long project to widen the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) between Interstate 66 (I-66) and Ox Road (Route 123) from four lanes to six lanes, including grade-separated interchanges in the vicinity of Popes Creek Road intersection and a portion of Shirley Gate Road extension ... On behalf of VDOT, Commonwealth conducted a supplemental archaeological survey to test an extension of the APE [area of potential effect] along Popes Head Road, west of the Fairfax County Parkway, to Quiet Brook Road ... One previously recorded site falls within the APE extension. Site 44FX1732 is prehistoric Native-American site of an unknown time period that contained an unidentified quartz projectile point fragment and quartz debitage. In 1997, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR) determined the site to be not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the investigation was to determine the presence or absence of significant archaeological resources within the APE, to the extent possible, evaluate the significance of any deposits and/or features that might be discovered"--Introduction, page 1.

Book The Historical Archaeology of Military Sites

Download or read book The Historical Archaeology of Military Sites written by Clarence Raymond Geier and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent work of anthropologists, historians, and historical archaeologists has changed the very essence of military history. While once preoccupied with great battles and the generals who commanded the armies and employed the tactics, military history has begun to emphasize the importance of the “common man” for interpreting events. As a result, military historians have begun to see military forces and the people serving in them from different perspectives. The Historical Archaeology of Military Sites has encouraged efforts to understand armies as human communities and to address the lives of those who composed them. Tying a group of combatants to the successes and failures of their military commanders leads to a failure to understand such groups as distinct social units and, in some instances, self-supporting societies: structured around a defined social and political hierarchy; regulated by law; needing to be supplied and nurtured; and often at odds with the human community whose lands they occupied, be they those of friend or foe. The Historical Archaeology of Military Sites will afford students, professionals dealing with military sites, and the interested public examples of the latest techniques and proven field methods to aid understanding and conservation of these vital pieces of the world’s heritage.

Book Participation Community and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb

Download or read book Participation Community and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb written by Patricia Farrell Donahue and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation, Community, and Public Policy in a Virginia Suburb: Of Our Own Making challenges the conventional wisdom about participation in modern American communities through the story of Pimmit Hills, Virginia—one of the first federally-financed subdivisions built for World War II veterans. Its story will be familiar to the millions of baby boomers who grew up in middle-class suburbs. This book argues that every community is the sum of all of the different types of participation—positive, negative, formal, informal, direct, and indirect—and not just the few participation activities that social surveys have tracked over the past few decades, such as voting or attending religious services. At the same time, Pimmit Hills’s story is unique. Its proximity to Washington, D.C., meant its residents had front-row seats to—and sometimes supporting roles in—the creation of policies that continue to shape the America we live in today, such as childhood vaccinations, discrimination, and information technology.
