Book Engineering Development and Philosophy

Download or read book Engineering Development and Philosophy written by Steen Hyldgaard Christensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inclusive, cross-cultural study rethinks the nexus between engineering, development, and culture. It offers diverse commentary from a range of disciplinary perspectives on how the philosophies of today’s cultural triumvirate—American, European and Chinese—are shaped and given nuance by the cross-fertilization of engineering and development. Scholars from the humanities and social sciences as well as engineers themselves reflect on key questions that arise in this relational context, such as how international development work affects the professional views, identities, practice and ethics of engineers. The first volume to offer a systematic and collaborative study that cuts across continental boundaries, the book delineates the kinds of skills and competences that tomorrow’s engineering success stories will require, and analyzes fascinating aspects of the interplay between engineering and philosophy, such as how traditionally Chinese ways of thinking can influence modern engineering practice in the world’s most populous country. China’s problematic mix of engineering woes and wonders, from the high-profile crash on its high-profile rail network to its ‘bird’s nest’ Olympic stadium, adds to the urgency for reform, while Europe’s Enlightenment-informed legal frameworks are contrasted with Chinese mechanisms in their governance of the field of nanotechnology, a crucial element of future technical evolution. Fascinating and compelling in equal measure, this volume addresses one of the topics at the leading edge of humanity’s quest to survive, and to thrive.

Book International Perspectives on Engineering Education

Download or read book International Perspectives on Engineering Education written by Steen Hyldgaard Christensen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-25 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inclusive cross-cultural study rethinks the nexus between engineering education and context. In so doing the book offers a reflection on contextual boundaries with an overall boundary crossing ambition and juxtaposes important cases of critical participation within engineering education with sophisticated scholarly reflection on both opportunities and discontents. Whether and in what way engineering education is or ought to be contextualized or de-contextualized is an object of heated debate among engineering educators. The uniqueness of this study is that this debate is given comprehensive coverage – presenting both instrumentally inclined as well as radical positions on transforming engineering education. In contextualizing engineering education, this book offers diverse commentary from a range of disciplinary, meta- and interdisciplinary perspectives on how cultural, professional, institutional and educational systems contexts shape histories, structural dynamics, ideologies and challenges as well as new pathways in engineering education. Topics addressed include examining engineering education in countries ranging from India to America, to racial and gender equity in engineering education and incorporating social awareness into the area. Using context as “bridge” this book confronts engineering education head on. Contending engineering ideologies and corresponding views on context are juxtaposed with contending discourses of reform. The uniqueness of the book is that it brings together scholars from the humanities, the social sciences and engineering from Europe – both East and West – with the United States, China, Brazil, India and Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing look at Japanese design weaving together the stories of people who shaped Japan’s design industries with social history, economic conditions, and geopolitics. From cars to cameras, design from Japan is ubiquitous. So are perceptions of Japanese design, from calming, carefully crafted minimalism to avant-garde catwalk fashion, or the cute, Kawaii aesthetic populating Tokyo streets. But these portrayals overlook the creativity, generosity, and sheer hard work that has gone into creating and maintaining design industries in Japan. In Designing Modern Japan, Sarah Teasley deftly weaves together the personal stories of people who shaped and shape Japan’s design industries with social history, economic conditions, and geopolitics.. Key to her account is how design has been a strategy to help communities thrive during turbulent times, and for making life better along the way. Deeply researched and superbly illustrated, Designing Modern Japan appeals to a wide audience for Japanese design, history, and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report advances the general plan for change in postsecondary engineering education of the National Academy of Sciences' Board on Engineering Education and reports on four regional symposia responding to a 1993 working paper. Chapter 1 contains the Board's message about what it proposes with the plan and the general basis for its proposals. The Board recommends that all institutions conduct institutional self-assessment, redress imbalances in the faculty incentive system, improve teaching methods and practices, ensure that the curriculum supports the institution's strategic plan, and expand beneficial interactions and outreach. A table in this section presents the key ideas contained in the report. Chapter 2 describes the Board's vision of the 21st century. Chapter 3 examines in detail engineering education as it is currently practiced and looks at areas that need improvement. Chapter 4 addresses how to make change happen. Chapter 5 is a call to action for higher education institutions as well as industry, government, professional societies, and accrediting authorities. Appendixes contain the Board's task statement, list of regional symposia and participants, contributors to the study, and an outline of the purpose and principles of a new curriculum and the means to achieve it.
