Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of music faculty toward course suitability for online delivery, the pedagogical practices of online music faculty, and the current predominate characteristics of online music courses. A review of the literature found no studies that surveyed music faculty to find the current characteristics of online music courses. A researcher-designed survey was completed by participants (N = 230) from 160 randomly selected institutions accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The majority of participants were from large universities (10,000 or more students) and did not have previous experience teaching music online. Most universities offering undergraduate and graduate courses online have done so for 4 or fewer years. Music history, music appreciation, and religious studies in music were the most commonly offered online undergraduate courses, and music education, music research, and music technology were the most common graduate courses. Participants also rated the suitability of given course types for online delivery. Music Appreciation, Music Business, Music History, and Music Research were found to be somewhat suitable for online delivery, while courses such as Composition, Music Education Methods, Sight Singing & Ear Training, and Applied Instrumental/Vocal Lessons were not considered suitable for online delivery. Book excerpt: Critical of technologically determinist assumptions underpinning current educational policy, Victoria Armstrong argues that this growing technicism has grave implications for the music classroom where composition is often synonymous with the music technology suite. The use of computers and associated compositional software in music education is frequently decontextualized from cultural and social relationships, thereby ignoring the fact that new technologies are used and developed within existing social spaces that are always already delineated along gender lines. Armstrong suggests these gender-technology relations have a profound effect on the ways adolescents compose music as well as how gendered identities in the technologized music classroom are constructed. Drawing together perspectives from the sociology of science and technology studies (STS) and the sociology of music, Armstrong examines the gendered processes and practices that contribute to how students learn about technology, the repertoire of teacher and student talk, its effect on student confidence and the issue of male control of technological knowledge. Even though girls and female teachers have technological knowledge and skill, the continuing material and symbolic associations of technology with men and masculinity contribute to the perception of women as less able and less interested in all things technological. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study is an investigation of the uses of music technology in music education programs in two universities. The purpose of this study was to discover the ways in which music technology was used in two schools of music across the entire music curriculum for music education students. This study detailed the ways in which music technology was implemented into pedagogic practices for all students within the two schools of this study and explored the participants' perceptions and experiences related to music technology. The following research questions guided this study: How is music technology used across the school of music curriculum for music education students in each of the two universities selected? How do the participants in this study learn to use music technology? What are the issues, if any, with incorporating music technology in each of the two universities selected? A qualitative methodology was used with a multiple case study design. Data collection included interviews, field observations, and collection of artifacts. Data analysis included coding of data to reveal themes which included two large categories: learning technology and incorporating technology. The trustworthiness of the final report was established using peer review, member checks, an external audit, and reporting of bias. Results of this study include a lack of music technology integration despite faculty and administrative support to improve music technology integration. Participants were aware of the importance of music technology education and felt that its inclusion was long overdue despite the many challenges associated with integration. A list of suggestions for the profession were considered including the availability of jobs in music technology and music technology education, the need for a broader more attractive/modern curriculum in music education to include music technologies, affordable solutions for incorporating more music technology in music education studies, the effectiveness of music technology on multiple learning modes, alternative solutions to teaching about music technology to include use of community support, the need to add a music technology specialist to the music education faculty in music education programs in pre-service teacher training programs, and lastly, the importance of adding a music technology techniques class to the music education curriculum.

Book excerpt: This study examines why too few undergraduate performance majors are learning music technology skills they will need to work as professional musicians. First, the study examines the technology skills required by professional musicians, and then it describes the ways in which schools integrate music technology within the performance major. Data for the study was collected from professional musicians, from music school administrators, and from curriculum artifacts. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to triangulate the data. Findings from the data indicate the following: (a) Professional musicians use technology to notate music, arrange/edit/play back music, record music, organize their digital music collection, teach music, and assess their performances. (b) Many schools of music feel that their overall program is weak in teaching music technology skills. (c) Type and size of a music school do not influence how music technology is taught. However, type of degree, funding structure, the number of core music credits, and whether or not a school offers a music technology program do affect the extent to which music technology skills are taught to undergraduate performance majors. (d) Factors impeding the establishment of a music technology program include overloaded curriculum, insufficient equipment, insufficient funding, and weak faculty technology skills. Recommendations include the creation of a music technology plan; faculty development; an increase in funding, facilities, and technology support; changes in curriculum loads and delivery methods; and the development of assessment methods.
