Book excerpt: Hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline and decahydroquinoline has been studied employing several catalysts: Bronsted and Lewis acid catalysts without metal, and silica-alumina, .gamma.-alumina and magnesia impregnated with molybdenum, tungsten, nickel or cobalt. Our results show that nitrogen removal rate was highest for molybdenum on alumina and tungsten on silica-alumina or alumina catalysts. Nitrogen abstraction using .gamma.-alumina support is considerably faster than with magnesia support. Several catalysts have been prepared and tested, with the emphasis on understanding the role of acidity in the carbon-nitrogen bond scission reaction. Hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline has been studied by using Ni, Mo/chlorided or fluorided alumina catalysts, with various halide concentrations. Preliminary results from this study indicate that halogenation of .gamma.-alumina catalysts slightly enhanced the hydrogenolysis activity but showed little effect on the hydrogenation activity. Initial results from phenothiazine hydroprocessing show that carbon-sulfur bonds in the reactant are broken much faster than the carbon-nitrogen bonds. Data relevant to this reaction are being evaluated, utilizing kinetic analysis to give quantitative rates of C-N and C-S bond scission and the extents and rates of hydrogenation. Book excerpt: Coal-derived liquids are characterized by the presence of a considerable concentration of oxygen-containing components. Therefore, a systematic catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) study of coal-derived liquids and related model compounds is being carried out. This study provides information not only on the mechanism of HDO as related to the subject of catalytic upgrading of coal-derived liquids, but also on the role of oxygen-containing compounds in primary coal liquefaction processes. The main objective of this research project is to develop effective catalyst systems and processing conditions for hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of coal-derived liquids (CDL) in a wide range of nitrogen contents and structural type composition. This is of particular importance in view of the higher concentration of nitrogen-containing compounds in CDL as compared to that in petroleum feedstocks. For a better understanding of denitrogenation processes, the project includes systematic denitrogenation studies not only of CDL but also of related model N-containing compounds found in such liquids, e.g., phenanthridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, carbazoles, acridines, etc., as a function of catalysts type and experimental rate, mechanism and stereochemistry of HDN of structurally distinct N-containing aromatic systems in the presence of sulfided catalysts.

Book excerpt: Preliminary results from decahydroquinoline hydrodenitrogenation runs show that Bronsted acidity by itself will not catalyze carbon-nitrogen bond scission. The C-N bond cleavage must therefore be catalyzed by an active site, which consists of a transition metal ion in close proximity to an acid site. It appears that hydrodenitrogenation requires both an acidic and a basic site for the Hoffman E2 elimination reaction to occur. Several catalysts have been prepared and tested, including Bronsted and Lewis acid catalysts without metal, and silica-alumina and .gamma.-alumina impregnated with molybdenum, vanadium, nickel or iron. Our results show that the nitrogen removal rate was highest for molybdenum on .gamma.-alumina catalyst and the rate decreased with lower Mo concentrations. Aluminum borate and aluminum borate phosphate catalysts (with or without nickel) were prepared to develop novel catalysts that would selectively coordinate the nitrogen atom and remove it without excessive hydrogenation. Results show that the support plays an important role in the nitrogen-removal process. Hydrodenitrogenation of aniline has been studied over a presulfided Ni-Mo/.gamma.-Al2O3 catalyst, and a reaction network has been proposed. Aniline hydrodenitrogenation appears to involve partial hydrogenation of the benzene ring to reduce aromatic resonance with the nitrogen atom, thus reducing the C-N bond strength and facilitating NH3 elimination.

Book excerpt: Research described in this report was aimed at synthesizing and evaluating supported Mo oxynitrides and oxycarbides for the selective removal of nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen from model and authentic coal-derived liquids. The Al2O3-supported oxynitrides and oxycarbides were synthesized via the temperature programmed reaction of supported molybdenum oxides or hydrogen bronzes with NH3 or an equimolar mixture of CH4 and H2. Phase constituents and composition were determined by X-ray diffraction, CHN analysis, and neutron activation analysis. Oxygen chemisorption was used to probe the surface structure of the catalysts. The reaction rate data was collected using specially designed micro-batch reactors. The Al2O3-supported Mo oxynitrides and oxycarbides were competitively active for quinoline hydrodenitrogenation (HDN), benzothiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and benzofuran hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). In fact, the HDN and HDO specific reaction rates for several of the oxynitrides and oxycarbides were higher than those of a commercial Ni-Mo/Al2O3 hydrotreatment catalyst. Furthermore, the product distributions indicated that the oxynitrides and oxycarbides were more hydrogen efficient than the sulfide catalysts. For HDN and HDS the catalytic activity was a strong inverse function of the Mo loading. In contrast, the benzofuran hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) activities did not appear to be affected by the Mo loading but were affected by the heating rate employed during nitridation or carburization. This observation suggested that HDN and HDS occurred on the same active sites while HDO was catalyzed by a different type of site.

In previous exploratory research at Sandia National Laboratories, catalysts prepared via hydrous metal oxide (HMO) ion exchangers have been shown to have potential for application to a number of reactions associated with the conversion of coal to liquid fuels. In the present effort, one member of this class of catalysts, hydrous titanium oxide (HTO), has been developed for use in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of coal liquids. The unsupported (or bulk) NiMo-HTO catalyst performed well for HDS/HDN of a coal derived liquid as compared to the benchmark Shell 324 catalyst. The CoMo-HTO, while performing better than the Shell 324 catalyst, did not perform quite as well as the NiMo-HTO. In a side-by-side comparison of supported NiMo-HTO catalysts with commercial counterparts, the supported NiMo-HTO catalysts outperformed the Shell 324 and Amocat 1C catalysts on a weight of Mo basis. On a catalyst weight basis, the NiMo-HTO coated catalyst on a Shell 324 blank under performed Shell 324, while the NiMo-HTO coated catalyst on an Amocat 1C support performed as well as the Amocat 1C catalyst.
