Book Methodology for Benefit Analysis of CAD CAM in USN Shipyards

Download or read book Methodology for Benefit Analysis of CAD CAM in USN Shipyards written by Richard B. Grahlman and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis expands the concept of Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in naval shipbuilding to include maintenance. This inclusion is coupled with the integration of the design and manufacturing processes in the acronym CIDMM, which stands for Computer-Integrated Design, Manufacture and Maintenance. A methodology is proposed to identify and measure the tangible and intangible benefits derived from CAD/CAM in naval shipbuilding. The methodology is flexible enough to be applied to future CIDMM systems. A decision-aid for assessing the intangible benefits and a structure for computing the time benefits are proposed in the methodology. (Author).

Book Evaluation of Shipbuilding CAD CAM CIM Systems Phase II Requirements for Future Systems

Download or read book Evaluation of Shipbuilding CAD CAM CIM Systems Phase II Requirements for Future Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phase II Report of NSRP project 4-94-1 documents an analysis of CAD/CAM/CIM in shipyards, ship-design software firms, and allied industries in Europe, Japan and the U.S. The purpose of the analysis was two fold: 1. To describe the requirements of a competitive, future-oriented computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing/computer-integrated management (CAD/CAMYCIM) system for shipbuilding and 2. To describe how shipyard business goals may be used as the basis for selecting requirements for a shipyard CAD/CAM/CIM system. In carrying out the analysis, the project team concluded that increased utilization of CAD/CAM/CIM is necessary in order for U.S. shipyards to become competitive worldwide. The technology is already wide ranging in world-class shipyards, spanning design, manufacturing and management. However, there are opportunities for U.S. yards not only to catch up with but to leapfrog, the competition. Numerous areas exist for innovation particularly in areas of integration. Indeed, one U.S. company has successfully developed a datacentric approach that has dramatically strengthened its business position in the world market. The team also concluded that European and Japanese shipyards have succeeded in part by recognizing that a shipyard's executive level management has a specific role to play in implementing CAD/CAM/CIM technology. The role requires becoming familiar with the capabilities of the technology, considering the technology when developing shipyard business strategies and working with technical management to translate business objectives into priorities for the selection and implementation of the most appropriate parts of the technology for each shipyard.

Book A Study of the Effects of Applying CAD CAM Techniques to a Shipyard Sheet Metal Shop

Download or read book A Study of the Effects of Applying CAD CAM Techniques to a Shipyard Sheet Metal Shop written by Harry Hooper and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main functions of the sheet metal shop in a shipyard is to produce the duct work required for ventilating, heating and cooling the various parts of the ship. Because of the nature of this work and the craftsmen and the machine tool needs for carrying it out, the sheet metal shop becomes a likely candidate for the production of many other special metal parts needed in ship construction. To improve the efficiency of the sheet metal shop at the Avondale Shipyard facility in New Orleans, the introduction of a CAD-CAM system was considered in 1982. As the study progressed, it became apparent that the introduction of the CAD-CAM system being considered offered other opportunities to the operation. Not only would the system automate the production of duct work fittings, but it would also help reduce the labor and time needed for producing many other parts. In addition, it was determined that it could also serve as a DNC link between the Shipyard's ISM data base and the CNC flame cutting machines in the plate shop.

Book Shipbuilding Technology and Education

Download or read book Shipbuilding Technology and Education written by Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-05-22 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. shipbuilding industry now confronts grave challenges in providing essential support of national objectives. With recent emphasis on renewal of the U.S. naval fleet, followed by the defense builddown, U.S. shipbuilders have fallen far behind in commercial ship construction, and face powerful new competition from abroad. This book examines ways to reestablish the U.S. industry, to provide a technology base and R&D infrastructure sustaining both commercial and military goals. Comparing U.S. and foreign shipbuilders in four technological areas, the authors find that U.S. builders lag most severely in business process technologies, and in technologies of new products and materials. New advances in system technologies, such as simulation, are also needed, as are continuing developments in shipyard production technologies. The report identifies roles that various government agencies, academia, and, especially, industry itself must play for the U.S. shipbuilding industry to attempt a turnaround.

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Evaluation of Shipbuilding CAD CAM Systems Phase I

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Evaluation of Shipbuilding CAD CAM Systems Phase I written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the Phase I final report of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) project (Project Number 4-94-1) to evaluate world-class shipbuilders' existing CAD/CAM/CIM system implementations. Five U.S. shipyards participated in this study along with personnel from University of Michigan, Proteus Engineering, and Cybo Robots. Project participants have backgrounds in design, computer-aided design (CAD), manufacturing processes, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), production planning, and computer-integrated manufacturing/management (CIM). The results of this evaluation provided the basis for the CAD/CAM/CIM Workshop presented in conjunction with the 1996 Ship Production Symposium, and will be used as background in Phase II of the project to develop requirements for future shipbuilding CAD/CAM/CIM systems.
