Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in North Carolina, Vol. 29: January, 1908 There is no State organization in which our bee-keepers meet to exchange views; there is no system of inspection by which the apiaries may be brought to a higher standard; the bee-keeping magazines have but a limited circulation with us, and there is nowhere in the State a practical bee-keeper whose special duty it is to encourage or protect this industry. In order to see if we could reach any of the fundamental facts underlying this industry in the State, the writer - though not an actual beekeeper - began an inquiry into the industry in the summer of 1905, which has been continued (with interruptions) to the pres ent time. A carefully prepared sheet of questions was sent out, and all data received in reply have been carefully recorded. We have left out of account any who have less than ten colonies of bees, so that the data which we have is from actual commercial bee-keepers. We have on record replies from about 360 persons, representing a total of colonies, located in seventy-eight counties - an average of 134 colonies for each county heard from, or an average of nearly 108 colonies for each and every county in the entire State. We feel that with such an amount of data we are warranted in deducting some conclusions regarding the industry in the State as a whole. Book Southern Bee Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Southern Bee Culture Classic Reprint written by J. J. Wilder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Bee Culture I had to brace it with two sticks to keep it from tumbling over. I made some crude movable-frame hives (for I had not yet seen a patent movable; frame hive). With this outfit I began bee - keeping anew, studying them by handling them on their combs. My bee business began to grow; and after keeping bees thus for several years I heard of a bee-keeper who had bought some patent factory made hives. I paid him a visit at once, and I saw that the hives were just what I needed, so I bought a lot of them Next season I transferred my bees into them. From the old crude hives I transfered bees and what I had on hand extra, furnished me fuel during the summer and following winter. From the old decayed box hive my bee business has spread until bee keeping is my business or sole occupation. Besides establishing five apiaries of my own around in this section (as many bees as I can give proper atten tion to), I have furnished foundation stock from which many apiaries have been established in various sections of the South from the old mother hives. The ups and downs I had during this time, I have not space to describe in this small volume. If there is such a thing as a man being called to do certain work, I have been called to the field of bee culture, for I feel out of my calling at any thing else. Although I have mastered no little at eight other occupations, yet I feel more as if I am at my allotted work when I am among my bees than I do at any other of my trades. I have applied myself to bee-keeping in almost every conceivable man ner, keeping colonies of bees in glass hives in my bedroom and on my ver anda, keeping close and constant watch on them by day and by night. I have operated bees successfully and extensively for extracted chunk and comb honey m sections; I have traveled to and fro across the South, investi gating bee-keeping and the honey-plants in many sections; and if I did not know that there is a great future for the bee and honey industry here I would not attempt to write this book. While methods' of apiary work and bee-keeping differ m sections and locations, I hope to give you at least some practical thoughts along bee-keeping in your own location. Book Beekeeping in the South

Download or read book Beekeeping in the South written by Kennith Hawkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping in the South: A Handbook on Seasons, Methods and Honey Flora of the Fifteen Southern States An impression gained is that beekeeping operations differ but little in the South from those in vogue elsewhere, except mainly in the time of their application. We have little criticism of methods in vogue in the South, except the lack of winter protection of any sort in too much of this region. Box hives are too prevalent in many areas of the South, but so they are in the North. An impression of southern beekeepers is their eagerness to learn modern methods, where they happen to be unknown, and to put them into practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bee-Keepers' Review, Vol. 7: Jan. 10, 1894 Take one item. For myself I have become more and more impressed with the impor tance of a thorough knowledge of founda tions designed for use in sections for the production of comb honey. Much has been guessed but so far as I can learn little is yet known on this subject. In the experiment of which I recently gave an account one of the objects aimed at was to determine if possible if there was a difference among them and if so what kind was of such a nature as to enable the bees to work it down most nearly to the thinness and character of natural comb. To me the results were very satisfactory and encouraging and this not because one kind was shown to be better than another but because it appeared that a meth od had been hit upon by which the relative value of foundations could be practically determined. But this it seems is only a be ginning. Now that a door is open many other questions come up at the very three hold and press for a solution. What makes the difference among found ltds Is it the character of the machine used in making or the character of the wax or is it the method of the dealing with the w-x? Then if comb from foundation is made as thin as the natural comb, is it still more tenacious or is it equally friable and tender? Again it is well understood that the natural comb is not composed entirely of wax but that other substances are combined with the wax. Can any th'ng be done to imitate the natural comb in this, and so make foundation even less subject to the charge of being an adul. Teration than it is at present This suggests the matter of economy of wax in the use of foundation thus: What is the per cent. Of '3 wax wasted, not to say worse than wasted, when so made into foundation that the septa of comb resultingis 60 per cent. Thicker than the septa of natural comb or to put it in another way If foundation whose septa the bees will work down to a thickness of 90 of an inch is worth 600. What is that worth whose septa the bees wil work down to a thickness of 60 of an inch Prob ably from twenty-five to forty per cent. Mo e. If a man needs much foundation this should touch him at the tenderest point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
