Book A Survey of Agriculture in Malaysia Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Survey of Agriculture in Malaysia Classic Reprint written by Robert Michael McConnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Survey of Agriculture in Malaysia Malaysia is much too new to permit a worthwhile analysis of its overall agricultural economy. Only now is an attempt being made to improve the uniformity and comparability of statistical data and other economic information. Also, the country has not had, sufficient time to develop its economy to the extent that it gives definite indications of the form it will take. Thus, this study is largely an attempt to pull together the available pertinent information about the agricultural economies of the component units of Malaysia. However, some consideration has been given to the future agricultural economy of the new nation. With the creation of Malaysia some changes were made in the names of the component geographic areas. The area known as the Federation of Malaya (1957-1963) was designated the States of Malaya (or mainland Malaysia), while the Crown Colony of North Borneo became the State of Sabah. Singapore and Sarawak retained their historical names. The new names are utilized in this publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Rice is a staple part of the diet of virtually every Malaysian, to the extent that in each of the major languages used in Malaysia, rice means food and food means rice. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Rice in Malaya opens with an examination of the often fragmentary evidence of rice-growing in prehistoric Southeast Asia "the original home of this all-important crop" and then considers the great changes that followed the rise of commercial agriculture in the region before and during colonial times. A pioneering work when it first appeared in 1977, Rice in Malaya successfully combined the area-by-area approach of the geographer with the period-by-period approach of the historian to give a well-balance picture of rice-growing. The comprehensive use of evidence in several languages made the study the definitive work in the field. This re-issue of Rice in Malaya makes a classic work of scholarship available to a new generation of readers. The book remains of great importance not only to geographers, historians, agriculturalists and economists but also to anyone with an interest in Southeast Asia, for it explains in great measure many of the deeply-etched patterns of life found in modern Malaysia.

Book Distortions to Agricultural Incentives in Asia

Download or read book Distortions to Agricultural Incentives in Asia written by Kym Anderson and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-02-04 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast majority of the world's poorest households depend on farming for their livelihoods. During the 1960s and 1970s, most developing countries imposed pro-urban and anti-agricultural policies, while many high-income countries restricted agricultural imports and subsidized their farmers. Both sets of policies inhibited economic growth and poverty alleviation in developing countries. Although progress has been made over the past two decades to reduce those policy biases, many trade- and welfare-reducing price distortions remain between agriculture and other sectors and within the agricultural sector of both rich and poor countries. Comprehensive empirical studies of the disarray in world agricultural markets appeared approximately 20 years ago. Since then, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development had provided estimates each year of market distortions in high-income countries, but there have been no comparable estimates for the world's developing countries. This volume is the third in a series (other volumes cover Africa, Europe's transition economices, and Latin America and the Caribbean) that not only fills that void for recent years but extends the estimates in a consistent and comparable way back in time and provides analytical narratives for scores of countries that shed light on the evolving nature and extent of policy interventions over the past half-century. 'Distortions to Agricultural Incentives in Asia' provides an overview of the evolution of distortions to agricultural incentives caused by price and trade policies in the 12 largest economies of East and South Asia. Together these countries constitute more than 95 percent of the region's population, agricultural output, and overall GDP. Sectoral, trade, and exchange rate policies in the region have changed greatly since the 1950s, and there have been substantial reforms since the 1980s, most notably in China and India. Nonetheless, numerous price distortions in this region remain and others have added in recent years. The new empirical indicators in these country studies provide a strong evidence-based foundation for assessing the successes and failures of the past and for evaluating policy options for the years ahead.
