Book excerpt: In the following pages an attempt is made to record, however imperfectly, some of the scenes, and the impressions formed, during those great days of 1914 when our army was fighting so stubbornly and against such odds in France and Flanders [...]. The narrative includes my experiences at Le Havre, Harfleur, and the battle of the Marne, the march to the Aisne, the wait on the Aisne, the move across France to the new lines behind La Bassée, and the final move to Flanders not far from Ypres.

Book excerpt: A Kiwi surgeon recounts his experiences of life under fire tending to the wounded in the first year of World War One. Illustrated with more than 15 photos of the author, his unit and the locations of the battles he witnessed. “Arthur Anderson Martin was born in Milton, Otago, New Zealand, on 26 March 1876...When war broke out that year [1914] he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving in France and Belgium. His advocacy and practice of immediate specialist surgery - even under fire - for wounds to abdomen, chest, and upper femur, won acclaim in the British Medical Journal. He frequently placed himself at risk while tending the injured and was mentioned in dispatches by General John French in 1915 and General Douglas Haig in 1916. His book, A surgeon in khaki, was considered by critics to be a well-judged account of front-line medical conditions. After eight months’ duty in the field he returned to New Zealand for rehabilitative rest. However, he was immediately appointed to a commission investigating accommodation and hospitalisation at Trentham camp after severe outbreaks of measles, pneumonia and cerebrospinal meningitis. It was thought by leading politicians that his reputation would give medical weight to the findings of the commission. Even during his brief return to civilian practice in Palmerston North he was active in training the Rifle Brigade Field Ambulance at Awapuni. He returned with them to France, and was soon back in front-line service on the Somme. He was wounded at Flers on 17 Sep. 1916, and died in Amiens base hospital the same night. The loss of two of New Zealand’s most promising surgeons, Gilbert Bogle and Martin, on the same day led to the issue of orders for much more caution by doctors under fire than Martin had advocated. The death of a gifted surgeon was mourned in newspapers throughout New Zealand. On 1 Jan. he was posthumously appointed a DSO.”-Te Ara Encyclopaedia Of New Zealand

Book excerpt: The war of the medical men This book stands out as distinctive and different among the many other books being published in the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War, most of which will concentrate on the tumultuous battles of the period. This was war that embraced virtually the whole planet, involved all the people of the combatant nations and employed every resource, knowledge and skill in the war effort. Leonaur intends to recognise the contributions of all people-men or women, soldiers or civilian volunteers, on the battle front or the home front-who were involved in the Great War, and is releasing material covering subjects that may well be absent from the catalogues of most other publishers. Today we take for granted the expert medical staff who support our armed services, but at the time of the First World War, only 50 or so years had elapsed since her concern about terrible conditions in the Crimea brought Florence Nightingale to public notice, and where a wound was a death sentence and disease killed more men than enemy fire. In the Great War, Army surgeons had to cope with tremendous workloads when the weapons of the industrial age inflicted ghastly injuries as they scythed down men in their thousands. This book contains two first-hand accounts-brought together for interest and good value-by British military surgeons, who risked their own lives to save others. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The dramatic opening weeks of the Great War passed into legend long before the conflict ended. The British Expeditionary Force fought a mesmerizing campaign, outnumbered and outflanked but courageous and skillful, holding the line against impossible odds, sacrificing themselves to stop the last great German offensive of 1914. A remarkable story of high hopes and crushing disappointment culminates in the climax of the First Battle of Ypres. And yet, as Peter Hart shows in this look at the war's first year, for too long the British part in the 1914 campaigns has been veiled in layers of self-congratulatory myth: a tale of unprepared Britain, reliant on the peerless class of her regular soldiers to bolster the rabble of the unreliable French Army and defeat the teeming hordes of German troops. But the reality of those early months is in fact far more complex-and ultimately, Hart argues, far more powerful than the standard triumphalist narrative. Fire and Movement places the British role in 1914 into a proper historical context, incorporating the personal experiences of the men who were present on the front lines. The British regulars were indeed skillful soldiers, Hart writes, courageous and adaptable in the near-impossible circumstances in which they found themselves. But they also lacked practice in many of the required disciplines of modern warfare. Hart also offers a more accurate portrait of the German Army they faced--not the caricature of hordes of automatons, but the reality of a well-trained and superlatively equipped force that outfought the BEF in the early battles--and allows readers to come to a full appreciation of the role of the French Army, which has often been marginalized"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctors played a bigger role in the First World War than in any other previous conflict. This reflected not only the War's unprecedented scale but a growing recognition of the need for proper medical cover. The RAMC had to be expanded to meet the needs of Britain's citizen army. As a result by 1918 some 13,000 doctors were on active service over half the nation's doctors.Strangely, historians have largely neglected the work of doctors during the War. Doctors in the Great War brings to light the thoughts and motivations of doctors who served in 1914-1918, by drawing on a wealth of personal experience documentation, as well as official military sources and the medical press. The author examines the impact of the War upon the medical profession and the Army. He looks at the contribution of medical students, and the extent to which new professional opportunities became available to women doctors. An insight into the breadth of responsibilities undertaken by Medical Officers is given through analysis of the work of various medical units on the Western Front, demonstrating the important role played by doctors in the maintenance of the Army's physical and mental well-being. The differences between civilian and military medicine are discussed with a consideration of the arrangements for the training of doctors, and an assessment of the difficulties faced by doctors in adapting to military priorities and dealing with new challenges such as gas poisoning, infected wounds and shell shock.Doctors in the Great War will undoubtedly appeal to general readers, students and specialists in the history of war and society, as well as to those with an interest in the medical profession. As featured in the Derby Telegraph, Dover Express and Kent & Sussex Courier
