Book Supplement to the Catalogue of the Free Public Library New Bedford Mass Classic Reprint

Download or read book Supplement to the Catalogue of the Free Public Library New Bedford Mass Classic Reprint written by Free Public Library and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplement to the Catalogue of the Free Public Library, New Bedford, Mass The present catalogue is supplementary to the one published in 1858, and contains the larger portion of the books that have since been added to the Library. In the former Catalogue the title of each book was entered under the name of the author, when known, under the subject, and under the im portant words of the title. The arrangement of the supplement is sub stantially the same, but in its details it conforms in some respects to the Index of the Lower Hall of the Boston Public Library. The titles are not, as in the Catalogue, strictly conilned to one line; the imprint is given with the author's name only, and omitted in the other entries. Some new headings for subjects are introduced, under which are included many titles from the former Catalogue. The cross-references also have been increased; these apply to the Catalogue as well as to the Supplement, and in some instances wholly to the former. Works of Fiction and Juveniles, including a few popular works from other departments, are arranged at the end in separate divisions, the one of Authors, and the other of Titles. Some errors that have been noticed while the volume was in press are corrected on the next page. Other and more important ones may occur, but none, it is believed, that will occasion practical inconvenience. To Mr. B. F. H. Reed, for assist ance in reading the proofs, we are particularly indebted. A future supple ment will include a collection of Congressional and State Documents, and files of bound newspapers; for the reception of which a room is about to be prepared. Of Congressional Documents the Library has besides those en tored in the Catalogue a set nearly complete from the twenty-eighth to the present Congress. Additional value has been given to these Documents by the publication of an Analytical Index, carefully prepared by the oiiicers of the Boston Public Library, and so arranged that it can be used by every Library possessing any portion of them. The Newspapers include, among others, a file of the Mercury complete from 1807, and flies more or less complete of the Medley, Columbian Courier, Standard, and other New Bedford papers. It is desirable that these should be completed. Persons having copies, even if few in number, will confer a favor by presenting them to the Library, where they will be carefully preserved and rendered useful. A respectable, and rapidly increasing collection of pamphlets, has been partially arranged and catalogued. The work will be completed as soon as additional shelves are provided to receive them. The great cost of these v0] 1111168, which were prepared on the plan of printing approximately full titles to each publication, old or new, was found to be quite out of preportion to their general utility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plan for Stereotyping Catalogues by Separate Titles, and for Forming a General Stereotyped Catalogue of Public Libraries in the United States Recourse must be had to a supplement. In no other way can the acquisitions of the library he made known to the public. Ere long, perhaps, as, in the Library of Congress, the number of supplements may be increased to nine. The student may thus be obliged to grope his weary way through ten catalogues, instead of one, in order to ascertain whether any book which he seeks is, or is not, in the library. He cannot be certain, even then, that the hook is not in the collection, for it may have been received since the last appendix was printed. Download or read book Special Collections in Libraries in the United States Classic Reprint written by W. Dawson Johnston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Collections in Libraries, in the United States This circular was sent to libraries. In preparing the returns for publication very much has, of course, been omitted, and perhaps more might have been omitted with profit. It seemed better how ever, to err on the side of inclusiveness. It also seemed better to ar range the material by subject matter rather than bv place, although this plan involved more editorial labor. It should be added that these statistics, like others, must, in the nature of things, be only relatively correct, because some libraries, like the Library of Congress and the John Crerar Library, are grow ing very rapidly, and because libraries differ more or less in their classification of books. The editors are under especial Obligations to Dr. W. W. Rockwell, librarian of Union Theological Seminary, New York City, for edit ing the chapter descriptive of the theological collections. Book The Library Journal 1913 Vol 38

Download or read book The Library Journal 1913 Vol 38 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library Journal, 1913, Vol. 38: Chiefly Devited to Library Economy and Bibliography Catalog of 1904 was issued by the association, and should make more useful the original catalog, issued by the Library of Congress and still in print. The seventh volume of Charles Evans' chronological dictionary of American bibliography, covered the years 1786-1789. The Bureau of Education has at last issued the report on special collections in public libraries, prepared by Prof. W. D. Johnston and his coadjutor, Miss I. G. Mudge, and Prof. Johnston will continue this report in special articles from year to year in the library journal, furnishing the material for supplements to the report. It is urged that librarians who have knowledge of special col lections not covered in the original report should at once furnish the data to Prof. J ohn ston for the extension of his useful work, which is peculiarly valuable in connection with the system of library exchanges. Among works in special fields, the check list on European history, prepared by Prof. Richard son's committee of the American Historical Association, and the union catalog on rail way economics, from the Bureau of Railway Economics at Washington, are especially note worthy. The additions to library literature in general were numerous beyond present summary, Charles C. Soule's work on library planning being one of the most notable. Book Eminent Chinese of the Qing Period

Download or read book Eminent Chinese of the Qing Period written by Arthur W. Hummel Sr. and published by Berkshire Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent Chinese of the Qing Period was first developed under the auspices of the US Library of Congress during World War II. This much-loved work, edited by Arthur W. Hummel Sr., was meticulously compiled and unique in its scope, and quickly became the standard biographical reference for the Qing dynasty, which lasted from 1644 to 1911/2. Amongst the contributors are John King Fairbank, Têng Ssû-yü, L. Carrington Goodrich, C. Martin Wilbur, Fêng Chia-shêng, Knight Biggerstaff, and Nancy Lee Swann. The 2018 Berkshire edition contains the original eight hundred biographical sketches as well as the original front and back matter, including the preface by Hu Shih, a scholar who had been China’s ambassador to the United States. An introduction by Pamela Crossley places this classic work in historical context, and discusses its origins, authors and editors, themes, style, and contemporary relevance. Chinese names in English have been converted to the pinyin transcription system (changing the book’s title from Ch’ing to Qing), but the traditional Chinese characters have been retained. Additional materials added by Berkshire include a general bibliography, a Wade-Giles to pinyin conversion table, and a list of Qing dynasty emperors. Arthur W. Hummel Sr. (1884–1975) was a missionary, sinologist, and the first director of the Orientalia Division at the Library of Congress. Pamela Crossley is a professor at Dartmouth College and a specialist on the Qing empire and modern Chinese history, as well as the software author and scholarly editor of the ECCP Reader, a digital companion to the original Eminent Chinese of the Ch’ing Period.
