Book excerpt: This paper reports on the feasibility study of a proton Super-Conducting Linac (SCL) as a new injector to the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The Linac beam energy is in the range of 1.5 to 2.4 GeV. The beam intensity is adjusted to provide an average beam power of 4 MW at the top energy of 24 GeV. The repetition rate of the SCL-AGS facility is 5 beam pulses per second.

Book excerpt: Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) accelerator complex at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) to provide an average beam power of 1 MW at the energy of 28 GeV. The facility is to be used primarily as a proton driver for the production of intense neutrino beams [1,2]. A study of a proton Super-Conducting Linac (SCL) as the new injector to the AGS has just been completed [3] and found feasible. We are now initiating a second design phase with more emphasis on engineering considerations, namely: cryogenics, cryostat design, RF cavity design, RF power couplers and power sources, conventional engineering, and insertions for transverse focusing and other beam utilities. Some of these issues are addressed in this paper.

Book excerpt: BNL plans to upgrade the AGS proton beam power from the present 0.14 MW to higher than 1.0 MW and beyond for a neutrino facility. We have examined possible upgrade to the AGS accelerator complex that would meet the requirements of the proton beam of 1.0 MW for neutrino superbeam facility. The major contribution for the higher power is from the increase of the repetition rate of the AGS from 0.3 Hz to 2.5 Hz, with moderate increase from the intensity. To increase the AGS repetition rate we are proposing to replace booster with a 1.5 GeV linac. We will replace part of existing 200 MeV linac with coupled cavity structure from 116 MeV to 400 MeV and then add an additional 1.1 GeV superconducting linac to reach a final energy of 1.5 GeV for direct H− injection into the AGS. We will present possible choices for the upgrade and our choice and its design.

We have studied two possible approaches to upgrade the AGS to 1.0 MW beam power. The first is the linac option, comprising a new superconducting linac injector of 1.2 GeV, accelerating 9 x 103 proton per pulse in the AGS to 28 GeV at 2.5 Hz. The second option is to extend the existing 200 MeV linac to 400 MeV. ramp the Booster to 2.5 GeV at 6 Hz. add a new 2.5 GeV accumulator ring in the AGS tunnel. and finally ramp the AGS to 28 GeV at 2.5 Hz. Due to the simplicity of the linac approach and minimum interference with the on going research program. the linac option is the preferred one.

Book excerpt: An electron beam ion source (EBIS), followed by a heavy ion RFQ and superconducting linac, can be considered as a heavy ion injector for high energy accelerators, such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. A test EBIS, on long term loan from Sandia National Laboratory, is presently being commissioned at BNL. Experiments on this source will be used in evaluating the parameters for an EBIS-based RHIC injector. Some results of this commissioning, as well as the conceptual designs of the RFQ and linac, are presented.

First is a 1.45 GeV superconducting linac (SCL) to replace the Booster as injector for the AGS. Second is the performance upgrade for the AGS itself for the higher intensity and repetition rate. For high intensity proton accelerators, such as the upgraded AGS, there are very stringent limitations on uncontrolled beam losses. A direct effect of increased linac beam emittance is the halohail generation in the circulating beam. Studies show the estimated halohail generation in the beam for the present normalized RMS emittance of the linac beam is unacceptable. To reduce the transverse emittance of the 200 MeV linac, the existing radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ) has to be relocated closer to drift tube linac (DTL) tank 1 to meet the emittance requirement for AGS injection with low loss. This paper will present the various options of matching between RFQ and DTL, and chopping options in the low energy beam transport (LEBT).

Book excerpt: The Argonne Tandem uses Pelletron chains, NEC accelerator tubes, and a dual closed-corona system. Its main function is to be an injector for a superconducting linear accelerator. As long as the transverse and longitudinal emittances are within the acceptance of the linac, the output beam quality of the tandem-linac system is essentially determined by the tandem. The sensitivity of the linac to the longitudinal emittance .delta. E.delta.t of the incident beam makes the output beam quality dependent on the negative-ion velocity distribution in the source, transit-time effects in the tandem, molecular-beam dissociation, and stripper-foil uniformity. This paper discusses these beam-degrading effects.
