Book excerpt: Surprise: Embrace the Unpredictable and Engineer the Unexpected is a fascinating look at how we can handle and harness surprise in our work, relationships, and everyday lives. Pop Quiz! Do you prefer when: A) Things go according to plan? B) When the unexpected happens? Most of us pick control and predictability. Yet research reveals a counterintuitive truth: surprise is the key that unlocks growth, innovation, and connection. It is also the secret ingredient in our best memories. Through colorful narratives and compelling scientific findings, authors Tania Luna and Dr. LeeAnn Renninger shine a light on the world's least understood and most intriguing emotion. They reveal how shifting our perception of surprise lets us thrive in the face of uncertainty. And they show us how surprise acts as a shortcut that turns a typical product into a meaningful experience, a good idea into a viral one, awkward small talk into engaging conversation, and daily life into an adventure.

Those who have been in ministry for a while may have a bag of leadership tricks. But what are the results? Nixon and Shockley explore eight key leadership behaviors that will help a church move successfully through its first season of transformation, putting it well on its way to becoming a dynamic, growing body of Christ. They report that ninety percent of existing churches never make it out of the first season of transformation and give guidance on how to turn around a stagnant or dying church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its beginning Christianity was surprising, powerful, creative, world-shaking. Today in the West it is many times familiar, common, and expected, losing its power to surprise and transform. We have developed societal amnesia and ignorance of what Christianity originally was – and what it still can be. We need to recover the surprise of Christianity. We need to ask the same fundamental questions as the early Christians, which will help us rediscover the surprising power of Christianity in our midst. Focusing on the surprise of the gospel message takes us into the heart of what it is to understand Christianity at all, and thus what it is to remember and relearn the life-giving power and witness that went with being Christian at the beginning. This remembering and relearning can, in turn, surprise us all over again and chart a course for our witness today.

Book Ignorance and Surprise

Download or read book Ignorance and Surprise written by Matthias Gross and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between ignorance and surprise and a conceptual framework for dealing with the unexpected, as seen in ecological design projects. Ignorance and surprise belong together: surprises can make people aware of their own ignorance. And yet, perhaps paradoxically, a surprising event in scientific research—one that defies prediction or risk assessment—is often a window to new and unexpected knowledge. In this book, Matthias Gross examines the relationship between ignorance and surprise, proposing a conceptual framework for handling the unexpected and offering case studies of ecological design that demonstrate the advantages of allowing for surprises and including ignorance in the design and negotiation processes. Gross draws on classical and contemporary sociological accounts of ignorance and surprise in science and ecology and integrates these with the idea of experiment in society. He develops a notion of how unexpected occurrences can be incorporated into a model of scientific and technological development that includes the experimental handling of surprises. Gross discusses different projects in ecological design, including Chicago's restoration of the shoreline of Lake Michigan and Germany's revitalization of brownfields near Leipzig. These cases show how ignorance and surprise can successfully play out in ecological design projects, and how the acknowledgment of the unknown can become a part of decision making. The appropriation of surprises can lead to robust design strategies. Ecological design, Gross argues, is neither a linear process of master planning nor a process of trial and error but a carefully coordinated process of dealing with unexpected turns by means of experimental practice.

Book excerpt: For centuries, scientific discoveries have turned previous thinking upside down. New information comes to light that leaves even those in the scientific community scratching their heads, especially when new findings contradict long-held beliefs. Like Newton's explanation of gravity or Magellan's voyage around the world, the knowledge of relativity and quantum physics changed everything we thought we knew about our surroundings and unlocked undreamed-of possibilities. In this book, author Mark Hicks puts the work of brilliant minds such as Albert Einstein, Neils Bohr, and Werner Heisenberg into understandable language and shows the benefits their discoveries have brought us, including television, cell phones, and computers. While both religious scholars and scientists throughout history have seen each other as a threat to their pursuit of the truth, today's physics confirms exactly what the Bible says about the nature of God and His creation. They agree! Surprise: The Union of Quantum Physics, Relativity, and the Bible clearly connects science and faith in language everyone can understand. So even if you don't consider yourself knowledgeable about science or math, get ready to learn some amazing new things about the world around you and the God who created it! Mark Hicks has been a practicing attorney for eighteen years. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Oral Roberts University and a graduate of Regent University School of Law, where he worked with the American Center for Law and Justice.
