Book Air Temperature Shield Tests

Download or read book Air Temperature Shield Tests written by Richard E. Payne and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements were made with ,a group of sensors for 37 days at the end of a dock in Vineyard sound. The sensors included: a thermistor in an R. M. Young aspirated air temperature radiation shield, a thermistor in an R. M. Young multiplate shield, wind speed and direction, and solar irradiance. For the last eight days we also included a WHOI built cylindrical radiation shield. For wind speeds above 2m s-1 , the multiplate shield had an RMS error relative to the aspirated shield of 0.2-0.3 c during daylight hours. Adding a correction linear in solar irradiance decreased the error by a factor of one third to one half. The cylindrical shield appears to have performed better than this but there was insufficient data to support this conclusion statistically.

Book Selection of Sites for Seabed Manganese Nodule Processing Plants

Download or read book Selection of Sites for Seabed Manganese Nodule Processing Plants written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth of nine volumes prepared by the United Nations examining different aspects of the development of manganese nodule resources. The location of a processing plant for manganese nodules depends more on the availability and cost of complementary inputs (e.g. energy and chemicals) than on the traditional considerations of proximity to the mine or to the market. This volume examines the criteria for selecting a site and assesses a few likely sites of first generation processing plants according to these criteria. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive treatise on meiobenthology, the science of small animals which live, often disregarded even by zoologists, in huge numbers in all aquatic sediments. Covering all the scientific literature on the subject, particular emphasis is placed on ecological and systematic aspects. After a survey of the biotope conditions and important methods, the animals are introduced in a systematic account. This is followed by a report on the meiobenthos in relevant biotopes. The book concludes with an analysis of the productive role and the position of meiofauna in the food web and perspectives for future research.

Book excerpt: The clock is relentlessly ticking! Our world teeters on a knife-edge between a peaceful and prosperous future for all, and a dark winter of death and destruction that threatens to smother the light of civilization. Within 30 years, in the 2030 decade, six powerful 'drivers' will converge with unprecedented force in a statistical spike that could tear humanity apart and plunge the world into a new Dark Age. Depleted fuel supplies, massive population growth, poverty, global climate change, famine, growing water shortages and international lawlessness are on a crash course with potentially catastrophic consequences. In the face of both doomsaying and denial over the state of our world, Colin Mason cuts through the rhetoric and reams of conflicting data to muster the evidence to illustrate a broad picture of the world as it is, and our possible futures. Ultimately his message is clear; we must act decisively, collectively and immediately to alter the trajectory of humanity away from catastrophe. Offering over 100 priorities for immediate action, The 2030 Spike serves as a guidebook for humanity through the treacherous minefields and wastelands ahead to a bright, peaceful and prosperous future in which all humans have the opportunity to thrive and build a better civilization. This book is powerful and essential reading for all people concerned with the future of humanity and planet earth.
