Book Reading in a Second Language

Download or read book Reading in a Second Language written by A.H. Urquhart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading in a Second Language sets the testing and teaching of reading against a theoretical background, discussing research from both applied linguistics and cognitive psychology. Where possible, it focuses on research into second language readers and distinguishes different kinds of reading, particularly expeditious as opposed to careful reading, and emphasizes the validity of each.Sandy Urquhart and Cyril Weir relate testing and teaching, discussing similarities and differences, providing a comprehensive survey of both methods with the emphasis on those which have been substantiated or supported by research evidence. Finally, the book proposes specific research topics, and detailed advice on how to construct tests of language for academic purposes and suggestions for further research.

Book Reading Development in a Second Language

Download or read book Reading Development in a Second Language written by Elizabeth Buchter Bernhardt and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berhardt advocates more principled research and instruction in second language literacy. This book is a personal statement based on her own theory and research as well as that of others. It provides a comprehensive review of what is known about the second language reading process based on principles drawn from the synthesis of empirical data. The discussion is set forth from four main perspectives: an examination of theoretical models of the reading process and their application to second language contexts; a synthesis of empirical data of second language reading research from 1973 to 1989; descriptions of reader-based interactions with second language texts; and curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Book Literacy and the Second Language Learner

Download or read book Literacy and the Second Language Learner written by JoAnn Hammadou Sullivan and published by IAP. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of second language learning research has grown rapidly in recent years. Educators have become increasingly aware that pedagogical knowledge varies significantly from one subject domain to the next and that findings from educational research in one domain are not necessarily applicable to the next. Researchers in second language learning are adding to our understandings of secondlanguage specific pedagogy. There exists a need, therefore, for an outlet for these ever improving understandings of this content-specific pedagogy. The new book series, Research in Second Language Learning, will provide just such an outlet. The series invites articles from all methodological approaches to research. The series will promote a research-based approach to the decision-making process in second language teaching/learning.

Book The Diagnosis of Reading in a Second or Foreign Language

Download or read book The Diagnosis of Reading in a Second or Foreign Language written by J. Charles Alderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diagnosis of Reading in a Second or Foreign Language explores the implications of language assessment research on classroom-based assessment practices by providing an in-depth look at the little-examined field of diagnosis in second and foreign language reading. This volume examines the development of second and foreign language reading and how subsequent research findings, couched in this knowledge, can help facilitate a more-informed teaching approach in second and foreign language classrooms. By contextualizing the latest in classroom settings and presenting implications for future research in this developing area of linguistics, this book is an ideal resource for those studying and working in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and language assessment and education. About the NPLA Series: Headed by two of its leading scholars, the series captures the burgeoning field of language assessment by offering comprehensive and state-of-the-art coverage of its contemporary questions, pressing issues, and technical advances. It is the only active series of its kind on the market, and will include volumes on basic and advanced topics in language assessment, public policy and language assessment, and the interfaces of language assessment with other disciplines in applied linguistics. Each text presents key theoretical approaches and research findings, along with concrete practical implications and suggestions for readers conducting their own research or developmental studies.

Book Increasing the Reading Achievement of Elementary English Language Learners

Download or read book Increasing the Reading Achievement of Elementary English Language Learners written by Mary Zoubek and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, American public schools are facing a major demographic shift—the number of students from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds has dramatically grown over the past two decades. These students, many of whom enter school without being able to speak English, are expected to perform at grade level while simultaneously learning to speak, read, and write in a new language. However, data reveal a widening gap between the reading achievement of native speakers and students who speak English as a second language. In short, ELLs (English Language Learners) are struggling to achieve grade-level reading proficiency. While researchers in first language (L1) reading acquisition have investigated extensively the mechanisms involved in how children learn to read in their first language, second language (L2) reading research has only recently become its own discipline. Investigations in L1 reading have provided much of the research for L2 reading. Identifying the necessary components and effective instruction for improving the reading achievement of L2 learners is no small feat. Reading is a multidimensional process for first language learners, but this process becomes even more complex when considering the myriad of factors involved in second language reading: linguistic differences, literacy background, language exposure, oral language proficiency, etc. Much research has targeted the components of reading—this research indicates that phonological awareness and oral language skills are especially critical during the early stages of reading and beyond. In this essay, I define reading and illustrate the processes involved in fluent reading. I also present leading models of L1 and L2 reading. I describe the dual nature of L2 reading and synthesize current findings on L2 reading development. Next, I investigate research on the effects of phonological awareness and oral language on L1 and L2 reading achievement. Lastly, I suggest appropriate instruction to support the growth of phonological awareness and oral language for ELLs in a K-3 classroom.

Book Second Language Reading Research and Instruction

Download or read book Second Language Reading Research and Instruction written by Zhaohong Han and published by University of Michigan Press ELT. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title presents new research on teaching reading in a second language. Controversy abounds across many aspects of second language reading instruction despite much research on the subject. This volume attempts to bring together the competing perspectives on second language reading research and instruction to tackle these questions: should second language reading instruction be comprehension-oriented, or should it be language-oriented? What types of knowledge and skills are necessary for improving reading comprehension? What elements of language can be learned through reading? Is it possible to integrate grammar training into comprehension training, and if so, how may that be achieved in the classroom?By crossing the boundaries between diverse conceptual and pedagogical practice this volume appeals to second language reading researchers, teachers, curriculum developers, materials writers, and graduate students of second language education interested in reading.
