Book excerpt: This study addresses the effects of the abundance and proximity of competition from non-crop perennials on the performance of planted black spruce and jack pine seedlings. Both container and bare-root stock of each species are included because physiological differences after outplanting have been reported between the stock types. The study formulated a monomial (single-term) index of perennial vegetative competition, using distance-based criteria for the inclusion of competitors. The indices were derived from either vertical hemispherical photographs or field measurements but differed as to the number and proximity of the surrounding competitors included. The optimum index was calculated as the amount of competing canopy on a vertical hemispherical photograph in relation to the seedling leaf area. An alternative index that also performed well was the sum of the relative competing stem volumes based on one dominant competitor in each quadrant surrounding the seedling.

'The Supporting Roots - Structure and Function,' 20-24 July 1998, Bordeaux, France. The meeting was held under the auspices ofIUFRO WPS 2. 01. 13 'Root Physiology and Symbiosis,' and its aim was to bring together scientific researchers, foresters and arboriculturalists, to discuss current problems in structural root research and disseminate knowledge to an audience from a wide disciplinary background. For the first time in an international conference, emphasis was placed on presenting recent reseach in the field of tree anchorage mechanics and root biomechanics. The way in which tree stability can be affected by root system symmetry and architecture was addressed, as well as how movement during wind sway can influence the development and shape of woody roots. The role of different nursery and planting techniques was discussed, in relation to effects on root system form and development. Root response to different environmental stresses, including water, temperature, nutrient and mechanical stress was addressed in detail. The structure and function of woody roots was also considered at different levels, from coarse to fine roots, with several papers discussing the interaction between roots and the rhizosphere. One of the conference highlights was the presentation of new methods in root research, by a series of workshops held at LRBB-INRA, Pierroton, on the northern border of the Gascony forest.

Today approximately 50 percent of the sagebrush sea has given way to agriculture, cities and towns, and other human developments. What remains is further fragmented by range management practices, creeping expansion of woodlands, alien weed species, and the historic view that big sagebrush is a worthless plant. Two ideas are promoted in this report: (1) big sagebrush is a nursing mother to a host of organisms that range from microscopic fungi to large mammals, and (2) many range management practices applied to big sagebrush ecosystems are not science based.
