Book The Compositional Style of a Late Romantic

Download or read book The Compositional Style of a Late Romantic written by Michael Baal and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Schmidt was an important member of the musical establishment in Vienna in the years between the two World Wars. A pianist, cellist, teacher, conductor and composer of music in a late Romantic style. Franz Schmidt was also quite an accomplished organist. In the 1920's, as Schmidt achieved maturity in the development of his personal compositional style, he devoted significant attention to a series of works for organ. The study entails a detailed analysis of a representative sampling of Schmidt's organ compositions, as well as consideration of the composer's subsequent orchestrations of two of those works, and a comparison of Schmidt's organ compositions with selected organ works of Max Reger, whose compositional mantle Schmidt inherited. Results the study are compared to previous stylistic analyses of Franz Schmidt's orchestral compositions. Appendix material includes a complete catalogue of Franz Schmidt's compositions and a summary of noteworthy Austrian organ composers active 1900-1940.

Book ELEMENTS OF JAZZ STYLE IN TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN ORGAN WORKS SELECTED WORKS OF CHARLES IVES WILLIAM ALBRIGHT AND WILLIAM BOLCOM

Download or read book ELEMENTS OF JAZZ STYLE IN TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN ORGAN WORKS SELECTED WORKS OF CHARLES IVES WILLIAM ALBRIGHT AND WILLIAM BOLCOM written by Mi Kyung Hwang and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jazz is a distinctive stylistic influence in twentieth-century American organ music. Organ music in the United States during this period may be classified into four diverse categories: German-influenced; French-influenced; program music; and new styles that include twentieth-century techniques, such as serialism, chance (aleatoric), atonality, and jazz. The organ is an ideal instrument for jazz performance since the organ can provide diverse timbres, such as reeds (clarinets, trumpets, and trombones), strings (violin, viola, and cello), and overtone-rich sounds from mutations and mixtures. This document presents an analysis of jazz elements in twentieth-century American organ works, especially focused on the following selected organ works: Charles Ives' Variations on "America" (1891), William Albright's Sweet Sixteenths: Concert Rag for Organ (1975), and William Bolcom's Sometimes I Feel, and Free Fantasia on "O Zion Haste" and "How Firm a Foundation" from Gospel Preludes, Book IV (1984). The first chapter introduces jazz, including its definition, historical background, and styles. The next four chapters discuss brief biographical material, musical styles, compositions of each composer, and comprehensive musical analysis of their selected organ works, including form, melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, and registration.

Book Stylistic Trends in Contemporary Organ Music

Download or read book Stylistic Trends in Contemporary Organ Music written by Robert Michael Rudd and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to encourage research in contemporary organ music, which has been considerably neglected. The period 1945 to 1965 has been taken as the scope of this study. Only solo organ music has been selected, although a considerable quantity of music for organ and other instruments exists. Determining the stylistic trends present in the organ literature involved has necessitated an analytical search into organ music of the following countries: Canada, England, France, Germany, Latin America, and the United States. The greatest activity in organ music since 1945 has occurred in Germany. Thus, this study emphasizes German composers more than any other. Musical analysis in this study stresses compositional unifying devices and emphasizes unusual rather than common technical elements. The author avoids bar-by-bar analysis but stresses a survey of compositional practices. If a germ motive or Grundgestalt occurs, the writer determines its importance to the formal and stylistic characteristics of the music. Special attention has been given to permutation, interversion, polyharmonic and polychordal functions, as well as pandiatonic, polymodal, and polytonal textures. Unusual features of registration have been discussed, along with the composer's idiomatic treatment of the organ. Text painting has been mentioned wherever present. The writer has found that a composer's style is the result of technical and formal compositional devices, in the same way that a writer's style is the result of his use of elements such as grammar and diction. Thus, form and style are inseparable, but one is the result of the other. Background influences have led to the study's organization, having shown that this music embraces three stylistic divisions: neo-Baroque, neo-Romantic, and Syncretistic. The first two categories include, respectively, the eclectic practices of composers who have followed eighteenth-century German and nineteenth-century French influences, while the third category represents composers who have emulated more advanced twentieth-century composers. The term Syncretistic describes the practices of composers who use various serial techniques in styles that avoid eclecticism and neoclassicism. The author avoids entitling the third category serial, for serial indicates procedure rather than style. The composers chosen are representatives of the three stylistic categories in question. They were selected only after investigating many other composers. Their selection does not imply musical evaluations. These composers have not received proper recognition and their music has been performed very seldom. The author has not discussed music already well-known. The composers and compositions are now given, as they appear in the three chapter divisions: neo-Baroque works: Joseph Ahrens, Triptychon uber B-A-C-H; Richard Arnell, Second Sonata; Willy Burkhard, Choral-Triptychon; Harald Genzmer, 1963 Sonata; Alberto Ginastera, Toccata, Villancico, y Fuga; Ernst Pepping, Three Fugues on B-A-C-H; Hermann Schroeder, Veni Creator Spiritus; Gerhard Wuensch, Sonata Breve. Neo-Romantic: Samuel Adler, Toccata-RecitationPostlude; Henk Badings, Prelude and Fugue IV; Jeanne Demessieux, Triptyque; Harald Genzmer, Tripartita in F; Otto Luening, Fantasia; Jan Mul, Choral Joyeux; Daniel Pinkham, Suite. Syncretistic works: Joseph Ahrens, Verwandlungen I; Helmut Bornefeld, 1955 Partita; Johann David, Partita on B-A-C-H; Siegfried Reda, Preludium-Fuge-Quadruplum, 1960 Senate, and Triptychon. This investigation has revealed that organ music of the middle sixties has not yet embraced experimentalism in aleatory and electronics, characteristic of contemporary music in other fields. The current stylistic streams in organ music depart widely from current activities in other music. Thus, this study should be of importance to those interested in contemporary trends and of special value to those who perform and teach organ music. This study also indicates a vast area still unexplored by organ composers, including aleatory, experimental activities of many types, and ethnic musical sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Steele (1717-1778) was one of the most well-known and best-loved hymn-writers of the eighteenth century, and her hymns remained exceedingly popular until late in the nineteenth century, being reprinted regularly in hymnbooks throughout Britain and North America. She was the first major woman hymn-writer as well as the most popular Baptist hymn-writer in the history of the church. Despite this, she has been largely neglected as a subject of academic enquiry until now. This book aims to elucidate Steele's spirituality and to clarify her unique contribution to eighteenth-century hymnody. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, setting Steele's devotional expression in its theological, literary, and historical contexts, and providing comparison to other eighteenth-century figures. It uses archival sources to reconstruct her life and work, offers a close reading of her verse, and concludes that Steele made a significant and as yet underrated contribution to eighteenth-century devotional expression.

Book Songs of Ethiopia s Tesfaye Gabbiso

Download or read book Songs of Ethiopia s Tesfaye Gabbiso written by Lila W. Balisky and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tesfaye Gabbiso, prominent Ethiopian soloist, began composing song texts and tunes as a young lad in the early 1970s during a period of social and political upheaval in Ethiopia. This national ferment strengthened a creative surge among a generation of youth as the Ethiopian revolution (1974–91) was taking hold. An explosion of indigenous spiritual songs was one result. The indigenous song style was in contrast to the imported and translated European hymnody that had earlier been sung in Ethiopia's evangelical churches. Because of his testimony, both in life and song, Tesfaye was imprisoned for seven years during the revolution, during which time he continued to compose and sing. Thus, his songs reflect suffering, endurance, and hope in the "Babylons, Meantime, and Zions" of life experience. The human voice in song, rooted in the flow of the missio Dei, is perhaps the greatest testimony that may be lived out, whether in a prison cell or in the larger complex world. A special feature of this book is the inclusion of 104 of Tesfaye's songs (Cassettes 1–7) in English translation. This study is valuable as a cross-cultural textbook, offers rich lyrics, and embodies a challenge to Christian commitment in the arts.

Book Singing the Gospel

Download or read book Singing the Gospel written by Christopher Boyd Brown and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing the Gospel offers a new appraisal of the Reformation and its popular appeal, based on the place of German hymns in the sixteenth-century press and in the lives of early Lutherans. The Bohemian mining town of Joachimsthal--where pastors, musicians, and laity forged an enduring and influential union of Lutheranism, music, and culture--is at the center of the story. The Lutheran hymns, sung in the streets and homes as well as in the churches and schools of Joachimsthal, were central instruments of a Lutheran pedagogy that sought to convey the Gospel to lay men and women in a form that they could remember and apply for themselves. Townspeople and miners sang the hymns at home, as they taught their children, counseled one another, and consoled themselves when death came near. Shaped and nourished by the theology of the hymns, the laity of Joachimsthal maintained this Lutheran piety in their homes for a generation after Evangelical pastors had been expelled, finally choosing emigration over submission to the Counter-Reformation. Singing the Gospel challenges the prevailing view that Lutheranism failed to transform the homes and hearts of sixteenth-century Germany.
