Book excerpt: This study investigates the self-concept of adolescents participating in high school athletics. Traditionally, sports participation has been conceptualized as a socializing agent for males. Competitive athletics has been one arena in which males learn acceptable masculine behavior. However, this study views participation on high school athletic teams as an appropriate and healthy socializing arena for not only males but also females. Based on the developmental literature of Gilligan and others, it was hypothesized that team sports provide a unique setting in which adolescents foster not only competitiveness, aggressiveness, and autonomy, but also cooperation, affiliation, and nurturance. Thus, the adolescent's self-concept is based on the combination of attributes traditionally viewed as masculine and feminine. The integration of these characteristics would decrease the need to disavow or deny parts of the self that are traditionally not supported or valued by the cultural milieu. Based on these assumptions, it was hypothesized that: (1) males and female athletes would score similarly on measures of aggression, autonomy, achievement, dominance, affiliation, sentience, and succorance, (2) female athletes and female non-athletes would score similarly on measures of nurturance, affiliation, sentience, and succorance, (3) female athletes would score higher than female non-athletes on measures of aggression, autonomy, achievement, and dominance, (4) female non-athletes would score higher than the male groups on measures of nurturance, affiliation, sentience, and succorance and lower than males on measures of aggression, autonomy, achievement, and dominance. In order to investigate this issue, the Personality Research Form - E (PRF-E) was administered to a sample of 33 male and female high school athletes and non-athletes. Eight of the PRF-E scales were chosen to investigate the self-concept of the adolescents based on their relationship to gender stereotyped personality characteristics. These scales were combined to form the dependent variable labelled as the "agentic" and "communal" motivations. The communal measure was calculated by adding each student's scores on the succorance, nurturance, affiliation, and sentience subtests. The agentic measure was calculated by adding each student's scores on the dominance, aggression, autonomy, and competitive subtests. A series of Kruskal-Wallis One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests revealed that sports participation may not contribute to the development of agentic and communal motivations in male and female adolescents. Important limitations and implications of the research are also discussed such as the small sample size and refusal rate as well as future research goals such as replication and extension of this project.

Book excerpt: Self-efficacy is well known as one of the most effective methods to raise student academic achievement (Hattie, 2007). Known as the “I think I can” phenomenon, extensive research is presented concerning the impact of self-efficacy as the predictor to achievement. Likewise, participation in physical sports is known for its impact on academic achievement, as well as social and emotional health. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the presence of a statistically significant relationship between the level of participation in physical sports activities and the middle school students’ self-efficacy. A convenience sample of 69 seventh and eighth grade students from three middle schools in Kentucky participated in the study through an email survey containing both survey instruments. The four null hypotheses were tested through Pearson correlations to describe the direction and strength of the relationship between the self-reported participation in sports using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children, and self-reported levels of self-efficacy, as measured with Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children. The research supported the importance of students being given a variety of opportunities to participate in physical sports activities as a method to build academic, social, and emotional efficacy. Additional research would be useful exploring how the predictive value of participation in physical sports is affected by ethnicity and socio-economic status.

Book excerpt: The current study examined the self-perceptions of African American male student-athletes in regards to academic abilities, athletic role, and ethnicity. More specifically, this investigation explored how academic self-concept, athletic identity, and racial identity are related to the academic performance of 101 African American male student-athletes. In addition, differences in institutional affiliation (i.e., Historically Black University and Predominantly White University) and academic level (i.e., underclassmen and upperclassmen) were examined. The participants were administered four instruments: (a) the Academic Self-Concept (ASCS), (b) the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), (c) the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (MIBI), and (d) the Student-Athlete Questionnaire. Results of this investigation revealed that African American male student-athletes with higher levels of athletic identity had more confidence about their academic abilities and had significantly higher cumulative grade point averages. The more African American male student-athletes identified strongly and exclusively with the athlete role the less likely they were to commitment to an ideology that emphasizes commonalities of all human beings (i.e., humanist). In addition, African American male student-athletes who had higher academic self-concept scores had significantly higher cumulative grade point averages. As for Racial Ideology, African American male student-athletes attending the Predominantly White University reported significantly higher Assimilation, Humanist, Oppressed Minority, and Nationalist subscale scores. Finally, the results for athletic identity showed a three-way interaction among university affiliation, academic level, and sport participation. Given the unique educational experience of African American male student-athletes, it is imperative for academic advisors and other counseling professionals to apply the information obtained from this study to developin.

Book excerpt: In the current study, the relation of the frequency of sport participation and gender to CRF, muscular strength and flexibility, body composition, physical activity self-efficacy, and physical self-concept in a sample of 629 sixth graders were examined. Because both physical activity and sport participation have been related to similar outcomes, activity through physical education was controlled by including only 6th graders who were part of a required school class. MANCOVA analyses demonstrated that sport involvement was significantly related to improvements in physical fitness (i.e., CRF and muscular strength), physical activity self-efficacy, and physical self-concept (CRF and muscular strength). The interaction between sport involvement and gender was not significant, suggesting these relationships existed equally for the boys and girls.

Book excerpt: This non-experimental regression study examined the relationship between six motivational factors and academic performance for male high school student-athletes. Research has shown motivation in athletics can have an effect on academic achievement. The study was conducted at six public high schools in the northeast region of South Carolina. The revised Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-II) was the survey instrument used to collect athletic motivational levels of the 10th-12th grade high school male student-athletes (n=140). Academic achievement was measured through overall student grade point average (GPA). Sport type and grade level were statistically controlled in this study making them covariates. The data was analyzed by performing a hierarchical multiple regression. Descriptive data was reported and the strength of relationships determined and discussed. The analysis showed the strength of the relationships between the predictor variables (intrinsic, integrated, identified, extrinsic, and non-regulation) and the criterion variable (GPA). The results of the study suggested that overall motivation did not have a statistically significant contribution to GPA. Despite the fact that the overall model was not significant, there were some findings that suggested student-athletes with strong amotivational tendencies may be less likely to be motivated to achieve high academic scores. Future research is still needed in this area and should focus investigating family structure and socio-economic status among participants and ensuring sufficient and more equal representation amongst all sports involved.
