Book excerpt: A literature review was conducted to understand how mediators and faculty view a Peer Mediation Program (PMP). The review identified four subgroups: mediators, teachers, administrators, and school counselors as well as their views on the success or lack of success of PMPs. The research also reflects how to best engage stakeholders in the mediation process. PMPs serve as avenues for students to take an active role in creating a better academic climate for schools. Utilizing a mixed method analysis mediators and faculty were surveyed, using a 5-point likert-scale developed by the researcher. Mediators further evaluated their impact by taking the Self-Evaluation Inventory developed by Scrhrumpf, Crawford, and Usadel (1997). A focus group with mediators was conducted to understand student perceptions of their impact. This action research is limited to a high school in the south with the goal of making the program more effective.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to look at the implementation of a peer mediation programme in a Hong Kong secondary school. This qualitative study involving 19 peer mediators who came Form four and Form six discipline prefects, two programme advisors, four class teachers and services users from F.1 and F.2 schoolmates in a Hong Kong secondary school investigated their perception of a peer mediation to developmental guidance and its practices. Schools implementing a peer mediation programme were considered to have a both preventive and developmental guidance focus and practices. The findings also identified a number of important factors which facilitated the implementation and development of the peer mediation programme. This study used qualitative methods to examine the implementation of a peer mediation programme in a Hong Kong Secondary School. The school and the social worker jointly organized and held a series of training activities to the peer mediators and the peer mediator could learn conflict resolution and mediation techniques from the School based Conflict Resolution Training manual which is modified and quoted from the Peer Mediation Programme - Peer Mediators Training Manual to be iii organized and published by Hong Kong Family Welfare Society and sponsored by The Hong Kong Bank Foundation. The main targets of receiving the peer mediation services were mainly From one and From two students. In order to achieve an efficient and effective peer mediation, selecting peer mediators, the content of the training programme and how different parties perceive the service were very important. The findings also identified a number of important factors including comprehensive peer mediation training in which had to enhance communication skills; various strategies of promoting the peer mediation service to students; giving students a right to seek help from peer mediators directly; making students and teachers have a deeper understanding of the rational and effectiveness of a peer mediation service which facilitated the implementation and development of the peer mediation in the particular secondary school. Significantly, the peer mediation programme was able to help clients' to solve their conflicts at particular levels and also provide good opportunities for peer mediators to have personal growth. Book excerpt: "This case study investigated a peer mediation program at William Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois. Peer mediation offers an opportunity for students to solve their disputes with the assistance of a student mediator. The peer mediation program at Fremd High School helps to foster skills that allow students to become successful problem solvers. The school reported a significant decrease in discipline referrals, after the implementation of the peer mediation program, and it was noted that the school climate was more peaceful. The design and operation of the Fremd High School peer mediation program could serve as a model for similar schools seeking to implement such a program."--Author's abstract.

Download or read book Effect of a Peer Mediation Program on Short term Suspensions written by Alison R. Sharp and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: "Peer mediation has been proposed as a means to reduce violence within our schools and improve conflict resolution skills. In this study, peer mediation's effect on short-term suspensions for fighting, both aggregate and individual, was examined. Qualitative data was gathered from student mediators in one school to assess their views of and experiences with mediation. Records kept by two mediation programs were analyzed as well. The number of short-term suspensions for fighting in four urban middle schools was analyzed for 62 middle school students given short-term suspensions for fighting and subsequently mediated within the 1996-97 school year. Significant reductions in overall short-term suspension rates were found for three of the four schools. Using a paired t-test, no significant effect for mediation was found for individual short-term suspensions."
