Book excerpt: "This study involved students who are on Individual Education Plans (IEP) and their AYP achievement scores for Communication Arts and Mathematics. This study also looked at teacher salary in relation to the achievement scores for students' on IEPs. The research included findings that answer the question, "Is there a difference between IEP student's AYP scores on Communication Arts and Mathematics based on average teacher salary?" The research was conducted using 60 school districts randomly selected in the state of Missouri. The findings were analyzed through Microsoft Excel and A Statistical Program (ASP) software to calculate ANOVA. Findings indicate there is not a difference in AYP scores for students on Individual Education Plans for Communication Arts and Mathematics based on teacher salary. A study which includes the Kansas City School District may need to be conducted. The Kansas City School District's average teacher salary falls in the high category and IEP student's AYP scores in CA and MA are in the low range. Using the Kansas City School District average teacher salary in a study may skew the data results indicating a difference in scores based on teacher salary. Further studies are warranted using different randomly selected groups of school districts in the state of Missouri."

The purpose of this research is to answer the question: What is the relationship between teacher salaries and student achievement as measured by Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)? Utilizing an equity theory and distributive justice perspective, data related to achievement in English and mathematics by high school students, as measured by the requirements of AYP, were culled from the Virginia Department of Education for every school division in Virginia in the subjects of reading, writing, algebra I, geometry, and algebra II. These data represent the dependent variables and are analyzed with teacher salary and principal salary data, which represent the independent variables. Intervening variables identified in the education, public policy and economic literature are also included in the modeling. An analysis of nine general linear models produced evidence that the relationship between teacher salaries and student achievement, as measured by AYP, is relatively weak. Though the results do not support a wide range of policy recommendations, one recommendation is for school divisions in the northern region of the state to consider a readjustment of their pay scales in order for teacher salaries in those Northern Virginia school divisions to be more competitive with other school divisions in the state when adjusted for cost-of-living.

Book excerpt: This mixed method study examined perceptions of general and special education teachers regarding professional learning in regard to the seven professional learning standards as defined by Learning Forward Professional Learning Organization. Furthermore, the study sought to determine what relationship existed between teacher perceptions of professional learning and mathematics achievement for learners with IEPs. Participants included 44 general and special education teachers from grades 4 through 8 who taught mathematics to students with IEPs. Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) and Pennsylvania Value Added Assessment System (PVAAS) data were used to separate participants into two groups, schools demonstrating growth and schools not demonstrating growth. Data was gathered using the Standards Assessment Inventory 2 (SAI2) online survey from the Learning Forward Center for Results and personal interviews. The instruments elicited teacher responses regarding their perceptions of professional learning. Pearson's Chi-squared test was performed to determine what relationships existed between teacher perceptions of professional learning and mathematics achievement for learners with IEPs. Results of this study suggested that having supportive leadership in a community of learners was important in increasing student achievement. In addition, using a variety of student and teacher data to plan and evaluate professional learning that is connected with school goals was significant. Finally, participants emphasized the importance of differentiated professional learning options that take into consideration teachers' background and individual needs, as well as the needs of their learners, as a key component to increasing mathematics achievement for students with IEPs.

This study, conducted by the National Center on Performance Incentives, examines a pay-for-performance program in Round Rock (Texas) which distributed performance awards to teachers based on a team's contribution to student test score gains. The research questions are: (1) Does the opportunity to earn bonus on the basis of student achievement of taught core subjects of English language arts/reading, mathematics, science, and social studies by the teacher and his or her teammates effect teachers' attitudes about compensation and teaching, and affect their teaching practices; and (2) Does the opportunity to earn bonus on the basis of student achievement of taught core subjects of English language arts/reading, mathematics, science, and social studies by the teacher and his or her teammates affect student achievement. The study was conducted in the nine middle schools in Round Rock Independent School District (ISD) that were in operation in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years (a new middle school was opened for the 2010-11 school year). Preliminary results find no overall intervention effect on any of the student achievement outcomes. The effects sizes are typically very small with small standard errors. At the grade level there are some significant effects. However, these are sensitive to the outcome and are currently under ongoing investigation.
