Book A Study on Passive Methods of Vortex Induced Vibrations Suppression

Download or read book A Study on Passive Methods of Vortex Induced Vibrations Suppression written by Richardo A. Galvao and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of engineering systems, including those found in offshore operations, are often affected by vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). This phenomenon is caused by the interaction between a structure and shed vortices which can result in large amplitude vibrations of the structure that may lead to severe damage over time. Repairs to these systems are costly and time-consuming. Significant effort has been expended to develop a means of eliminating the need of repairs from vibrations. An investigation was undertaken to find a method of suppressing vortex-induced vibrations of a cylinder in a fluid flow. Passive methods of altering the flow behavior around the structure to mitigate the hydrodynamic forces that cause VIV were considered. Structural enhancements to a cylinder were attempted to accomplish this goal. The study also aimed to reduce drag below that encountered for a bare cylinder in comparable flow in addition to reducing flow induced vibrations. A number of approaches attempted succeeded in accomplishing this goal.

Download or read book A Critical Review of the Intrinsic Nature of Vortex Induced Vibrations written by Turgut Sarpkaya and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a concise and comprehensive review of the progress made during the past two decades on vortex induced vibration (VIV) of mostly circular cylindrical structures subjected to steady uniform flow. The critical elements of the evolution of the ideas, theoretical insights, experimental methods, and numerical models are traced systematically; the strengths and weaknesses of the current state of the understanding of the complex fluid/structure interaction are discussed in some detail. Finally, some suggestions are made for further research on VIV. The organization of the paper is given at the end of the next section.

Book Mechanics of Flow Induced Vibration

Download or read book Mechanics of Flow Induced Vibration written by Rajeev Jaiman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-10 with total page 1028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various passive and active techniques for controlling unsteady flow dynamics and associated coupled mechanics of fluid-structure interaction. Coupled multiphysics and multidomain simulations are emerging and challenging research areas, which have received significant attention during the past decade. One of the most common multiphysics and multidomain problems is fluid-structure interaction (FSI), i.e., the study of coupled physical systems involving fluid and a structure that have a mechanical influence on each other. Regardless of the application area, the investigation toward modeling of fluid-structure interaction and the underlying mechanisms in dealing with coupled fluid-structure instability with real-world applications remains a challenge to scientists and engineers. This book is designed for students and researchers who seek knowledge of computational modeling and control strategies for fluid-structure interaction. Specifically, this book provides a comprehensive review of the underlying unsteady physics and coupled mechanical aspects of the fluid-structure interaction of freely vibrating bluff bodies, the self-induced flapping of thin flexible structures, and aeroelasticity of shell structures. Understanding flow-induced loads and vibrations can lead to safer and cost-effective structures, especially for light and high-aspect ratio structures with increased flexibility and harsh environmental conditions. Using the body-fitted and moving mesh formulations, the physical insights associated with structure-to-fluid mass ratios, Reynolds number, nonlinear structural deformation, proximity interference, near-wall contacts, free-surface, and other interacting physical fields are covered in this book. In conjunction with the control techniques, data-driven model reduction approaches based on subspace projection and deep neural calculus are covered for low-dimensional modeling of unsteady fluid-structure interaction.

Book Mitigation of Vortex Induced Vibrations Using Macro Fiber Composites

Download or read book Mitigation of Vortex Induced Vibrations Using Macro Fiber Composites written by Gustavo Jose Munoz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) in cables is a prevalent phenomenon affecting the structural health of bridges and their components. Past studies have shown both passive and active methods are beneficial in the reduction of vibrations, however, a number of issues such as excessive base moment, transformation of geometry, intrusive implementation and fatigue limit the effectiveness of current engineering. A method involving no intrusion, no geometrical manipulation and a mechanism to prevent and mitigate VIV is needed. A "skin" of material embedded with Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) material and with the capabilities of perturbing the surface near the separation point of vortex shedding is explored and tested. Simplifications of the proposed material are made in order to understand the effects of the capabilities of a perturbing skin of MFC material. Construction of a 17-ft Open-circuit wind tunnel is done in order to make the VIV condition to be tested with the near method of VIV control. The VIV on cables is recorded. Experiments are run inside the tunnel at a Re of 11400 and 6400. In order to see the effects of surface perturbations, an MFC actuation mechanism is made and a cable section effectively able to cause surface perturbations is built. A test is then run to find the effect of different angles of perturbation. Finally, a testing and analysis of a phase-difference of a signal, at prescribed perturbation frequencies is done. This is analyzed against surface vortex formation theory. The data are analyzed in order to see the capabilities of an MFC skin on VIV of cables. The mechanism shows promise in both reducing VIV and providing for a low-key, non-intrusive control mechanism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their variety, the vibration phenomena from many different engineering fields can be classified into a relatively few basic excitation mechanisms. The classification enables engineers to identify all possible sources of excitation in a given system and to assess potential dangers. This graduate-level text presents a synthesis of research results and practical experience from disparate fields in the form of engineering guidelines. It is particularly geared toward assessing the possible sources of excitation in a flow system, in identifying the actual danger spots, and in finding appropriate remedial measures or cures. Flow-induced vibrations are presented in terms of their basic elements: body oscillators, fluid oscillators, and sources of excitation. By stressing these basic elements, the authors provide a basis for the transfer of knowledge from one system to another, as well as from one engineering field to another. In this manner, well-known theories on cylinders in cross-flow or well-executed solutions from the field of wind engineering--to name just two examples--may be useful in other systems or fields on which information is scarce. The unified approach is broad enough to permit treatment of the major excitation mechanism, yet simple enough to be of practical use.
