Various theories, approaches and concepts were developed to describe different forms of motivation. Today it is widely accepted that motivation is very important for managers since it is a way that leads to better work performance. This study investigates and ranks in order of importance the motivational factors that enhance motivation in the Maltese Courts of Justice (MCOJ). Moreover, it evaluates the impact of motivation on its employees’ work performance. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used to collect and analyse information for this research. The data was collected from a sample of 30 employees and another sample of the MCOJ Managers. Later the responses are analysed with different methods and presented in different formats. This study compares the findings with literature and provides areas for discussions. The result is that MCOJ employees are motivated by different factors but the most influential are trust, recognition/ praise and interpersonal relationships. The impact of motivation on job performance is presented from two different perspectives: the management and the employees. These results are compared to each other where differences in opinion are revealed. At the end of the paper, the conclusion sums up all the findings and various recommendations to be implemented by the organisation are presented. Finally, the author recommends different areas where this research study can be used so that future research may reveal a better understanding of the concept of motivation and job performance.

Employee motivation is a significant psychological aspect of management. To maximize the effort and performance of employees, there should be a mechanism of motivation. This study sought to investigate the effect of employees’ motivational factors on employee’s performance with special reference to federal Public procurement and property disposal service. This study was conducted based on the data gathered from employees of federal public procurement and property disposal service. This study adopted explanatory research design. The target population for this study was 177 employees of federal Public procurement and property disposal service. A census sampling was done and so the 123 employees constituted the sample size. A representative sample was drawn from this population using probabilistic sampling technique (simple random sampling) to select sample elements from the organization. The data collection tool was the questionnaires which contained closed ended Survey and face to-face interviews. Out of 123 questionnaires that have been distributed, all were usable. The mean value of the five point likert scale values of the dependent and various independent variables were taken as motivational factors which determine the performance of the employees. The analysis of the data was done with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and EViews. The research results found that Payment, promotion, Co-worker relation, supervision and Career development as major influencing factors for employee’s performance. Whereas responsiveness were found to have insignificant effect on employee’s performance in federal public procurement and property disposal service. The study recommended that to increase employees performance, organizations need to focus on modern pay package, having sound leadership, promotion of staffs, smooth co-worker relationship and plan and execute shorter and long term training.

Hence, it is important for organisations to know the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors and their effects on their employees. Companies should also know the link between employee motivation and their locus of control.

Until recently analysis of job attitudes focused primarily on human relations problems within organizations. While American industry was trying to solve the unsolvable problem of avoiding interpersonal dissatisfaction, problems with the potential for solution, such as training and quality production, were ignored. When first published, 'The Motivation to Work' challenged the received wisdom by showing that worker fulfillment came from achievement and growth within the job itself. In his new introduction, Herzberg examines thirty years of motivational research in job-related areas. Based on workers' accounts of real events that have made them feel good or bad on the job, the findings of Herzberg and his colleagues have stimulated research and controversy that continue to the present day. The authors surprisingly found that while a poor work environment generated discontent, improved conditions seldom brought about improved attitudes. Instead, satisfaction came most often from factors intrinsic to work: achievements, job recognition, and work that was challenging, interesting, and responsible. The evidence marshaled by this volume called into question many previous assumptions about job satisfaction and worker motivation. Feelings about intrinsic and extrinsic factors could not be validly averaged on a single scale of measurement. Motivation and performance are not merely dependent upon environmental needs and external rewards. Frederick Herzberg and his staff based their motivation—hygiene theory on a variety of human needs and applied it to a strategy of job enrichment that has widely influenced motivation and job design strategies. 'Motivation to Work' is a landmark volume that is of enduring interest to sociologists, psychologists, labor studies specialists, and organization analysts.

The survey came to the conclusion that only 11% of employees in Germany are still committed to working for their company. Two-thirds of respondents said they only do "duty by the book" and avoid additional commitment. Almost a quarter (23%) are said to have already quit internally. These figures were obtained by Gallup from a survey conducted in September and October 2009. What is shocking about this study is that the previously mentioned data has been very constant for years. The economic damage caused by fluctuation, absenteeism and poor productivity is estimated by the Gallup Institute at between 92.3 and 121.5 billion euros per year. One of the main reasons for a lack of employee motivation is seen in the behavior of managers. The present term paper deals with the topic of motivation and thus also with possible results of the above-mentioned study. Related to the professional environment the theoretical and the practical side are more near regarded. After a short introduction of the most important terms selected motivation theories are examined more near. Emphasis is placed here on the content theories. In the following chapter possibilities of the motivation increase are outlined. The focus here is on the leadership concepts of "management by ..." and forms of work organization. Following the theoretical explanations, the theories are applied to a practical example. After describing the situation, the scenario is analyzed and possible solutions are formulated. Finally, the core statements of this paper are summarized and a conclusion is drawn.

Why do people make promises to do and decide certain things? "Some people get more done than others" (Riley:1996, p.44); while some drift along, others are goal-setters; and some just cannot get started, whereas others are unstoppable. Why is it so? Why do employees ask themselves if it is worth the reward to make "an effort to achieve a goal" (Van der Wagen, Davies:1998, p.24)? The answer can be found in the realm of motivation. Motivation, something that according to various book titles1 needs to be understood, belongs to leadership studies and organisational behaviour. Consequently, "looking at what motivates people, and to lead them, is essential for every manager" (ibid.), because different things might motivate different staff members. One would not expect people to be as complex as they are, but "culture, although not the only variable of importance contributes significantly to explain key differences in social behaviour" (Treven, Mulej, Lynn:2008, p.33). Factors motivating followers in organisations often differ from culture to culture and do not only diverge from different organisational cultures (ibid.: p.34). There is no proof that motives like need for achievement, intrinsic needs for competence and self-efficacy can be generalised across cultures as the specific factors which drive such motives vary across cultures (Gelfand, Erez, Aycan:2007, p.482). This leads to the area of cross-cultural organisational behaviour, which, as well as culture-specific work motivation, only have a relatively short research history, but they actually date back to the times of Dionysios I. from Syrakus2
