Download or read book The Plays and Films of Bahram Beyzaie written by Saeed Talajooy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bahram Beyzaie is one of Iran's leading playwrights and auteur filmmakers. This book examines several of Beyzaie's films and plays and their preoccupation with the modalities and transformations of Iranian contemporary, historical and mythical identity from different perspectives. The chapters analyse Beyzaie's influential plays such as Arash and So Dies Pahlevan Akbar and his filmic magnum opuses such as The Crow, Bashu, the Little Stranger and Killing Mad Dogs from a range of critical perspectives including ecofeminist, sociopolitical, new-historicist, archetypal and psychoanalytical readings. They also explore Beyzaie's dialogue with filmic genres such as noir, different Iranian languages such as Gilaki, Iranian epics and ritual practices such as ta'ziyeh plays and javanmardi chivalry cults. Together, the chapters show how Beyzaie's works negotiate narratives of belonging and undermine the dominant exclusionist discourses in Iran, and how they use the resources of Iranian folk and performance traditions to comment on the position of women, children, intellectuals, and minorities in society.

Download or read book The Women of Karbala written by Kamran Scot Aghaie and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commemorating the Battle of Karbala, in which the Prophet Mohammad's grandson Hosayn and seventy-two of his family members and supporters were martyred in 680 CE, is the central religious observance of Shi'i Islam. Though much has been written about the rituals that reenact and venerate Karbala, until now no one has studied women's participation in these observances. This collection of original essays by a multidisciplinary team of scholars analyzes the diverse roles that women have played in the Karbala rituals, as well as the varied ways in which gender-coded symbols have been used within religious and political discourses. The contributors to this volume consider women as participants in and observers of the Karbala rituals in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, India, Pakistan, and the United States. They find that women's experiences in the Shi'i rituals vary considerably from one community to another, based on regional customs, personal preferences, religious interpretations, popular culture, and socioeconomic background. The authors also examine the gender symbolism within the rituals, showing how it reinforces distinctions between the genders while it also highlights the centrality of women to the symbolic repertory of Shi'ism. Overall, the authors conclude that while Shi'i rituals and symbols have in some ways been used to restrict women's social roles, in other ways they have served to provide women with a sense of independence and empowerment.

Book Representing the Unpresentable

Download or read book Representing the Unpresentable written by Negar Mottahedah and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering book, Negar Mottahedeh explores the central issues of vision and visibility in Iranian culture. She focuses on historical and literary texts to understand the use of visual culture and performance traditions in the production of the contemporary nation. Tracing the historical mediation and dissemination of ideas for national reform in the modern period of Iran, the book examines the various discourses that have constituted the image of the unpresentable “Babi” as the figure of Iran’s Other. In her exploration of gender and Iranian cinema, the author powerfully argues that this unpresentable image continues to haunt contemporary Iranian cinema’s representations of the nation. As cinema began to displace other forms of representation in Iran, Islamic culture attempted to keep the motion picture industry free from what it perceived to be the taint of foreign values and intervention. With insight and detail, Mottahedeh looks at the revealing ways in which contemporary Iranian cinema has dealt with representing an unpresentable national modernity articulated through traversals in time and space. These deeply national tropes of traversal shaped the image of the “Babi,” against which nineteenth-century Iran produced its own modernity. This highly original work, signaling a paradigmatic shift in Iranian studies and gender studies, will be an invaluable resource for scholars in cultural, Iranian, or film studies.

This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specific theatrical forms have been developed in many geographical-cultural areas of the world which are indigenous to those areas. Ta'ziyeh is a kind of comprehensive indigenous form considered as being the national form of Iranian theatre which have pervasive influence in the Iranian works of drama and play. It originates from some famous mythologies and rites such as Mithraism, Sug-e-Siavush (Mourning for Siavush) and Yadegar-e-Zariran (Memorial of Zarir). Ta'ziyeh was developed in the Safavid period (1502-1736 CE) in Iran when the king of Iran allowed Ta'ziyeh groups to perform it at Muharram time. It is one of the most highly developed and powerful examples of passion play which mostly recounts the tragedy of Hussein and his followers. It is the only serious tragedy in the Islamic world which ever developed in Iran and India. Currently, different theatrical styles and methods are intermingled without regards for the limits and boundaries, which are manifested in a performance. Subsequently, in the contemporary setting, many directors and playwrights have been influenced by the form and content of Ta'ziyeh and apply it in their works. They have brought the 'form' and 'content' of Ta'ziyeh and combined them with western influenced theatre styles to create a new genre of works. This new style is known as 'eclectic theatre' or 'eclecticism' and is a new style in postmodernism which can be manifested in connection with theatre activities of Iran. For instance, Pastoo- khaneh's (Amjad, 2000) is taken from the traditional plays such as the 'farcical plays' (takht-e-hozi and kheimeh shab bazi) and Hamey-e Pesaran-e Kaveh (Kaveh's All Sons) (Rahimi, 1994) is obtained based on selection and combination 'dramatic storytelling' in association with western theater. The intend of this study, designed a conceptual framework based on the relationship and participation of actors and audience in theatre alongside ritual and religious aspects. In order to recognize the dramatic value and considering the strong moral principles of Ta'ziyeh performance and Western theatre, Ta'ziyeh and Brecht theatre analysed. Ta'ziyeh performers are regarded as actors. This raises the question of what cab be the differences between the notion of 'acting' and 'performing' in these two types of performance. The problem is an 'actor' in relation to events that are regarded as sacred and ritual truths. To address this question, the definition of the critical elements in both forms of theatre, their structure and also the 'V-Effect' in Brecht theatre is comprehensively discussed. Finally, investigating a theatre production based on eclectic theory and conclusions of study were made.

Book When Men Dance Choreographing Masculinities Across Borders

Download or read book When Men Dance Choreographing Masculinities Across Borders written by Jennifer Fisher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-07 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While dance has always been as demanding as contact sports, intuitive boundaries distinguish the two forms of performance for men. Dance is often regarded as a feminine activity, and men who dance are frequently stereotyped as suspect, gay, or somehow unnatural. But what really happens when men dance? When Men Dance offers a progressive vision that boldly articulates double-standards in gender construction within dance and brings hidden histories to light in a globalized debate. A first of its kind, this trenchant look at the stereotypes and realities of male dancing brings together contributions from leading and rising scholars of dance from around the world to explore what happens when men dance. The dancing male body emerges in its many contexts, from the ballet, modern, and popular dance worlds to stages in Georgian and Victorian England, Weimar Germany, India and the Middle East. The men who dance and those who analyze them tell stories that will be both familiar and surprising for insiders and outsiders alike.
