Book excerpt: The recent increased prevalence of uterine prolapses in sows around parturition has led to inferences that the prolapses may be associated with hypocalcemia. However, limited data are available to support that hypocalcemia occurs in sows. Hypocalcemia in dairy cows is associated with feeding excess dietary Ca during late gestation. The excess Ca is assumed to suppress homeostatic mechanisms critical to maintain serum Ca concentrations as the Ca demand increases during the early stages of lactation. Therefore, in our first experiment, multiparous sows were fed diets with excess Ca during late gestation and early lactation to assess the potential development of hypocalcemia in the peripartum period. Regardless of the dietary Ca level, all sows maintained blood ionized Ca and plasma total Ca concentrations within the physiological normal range, and no clinical signs of Ca metabolism disorders were observed. These data imply that excess Ca in late gestation diets did not result in hypocalcemia during the peripartum period. However, sows fed excess Ca were not able to maintain normal serum P concentrations, developing hypophosphatemia. Further studies were undertaken to evaluate P nutrition in reproducing sows. Adequate inclusion of P in sow diets is critical to promote fetal growth, lactation, and skeletal integrity. Due to the impracticality of using conventional response traits to assess P requirements in sows, limited studies have been conducted to determine P requirements of reproducing sows. In our second study we evaluated the use of 24-hour urinary P excretion as a relatively simple and practical alternative method to estimate P requirement of sows during gestation and lactation. Multiparous sows were fed diets with total P concentrations ranging from 0.40 to 0.80%. Total P requirements were estimated using mathematical modelling of nutrient intake-response curves. Based on a single 24-hour urinary P excretion, estimated daily dietary total P requirements in mid and late gestation were 10.3 g (6.0 g standardized total tract digestible P; STTD P), and estimates for early and late lactation were 31.1 (16.6 g STTD P) and 40.3 g (22.1 g STTD P), respectively. Plasma measurements confirmed that sows were able to maintain P and Ca within the physiological normal range at the estimated levels of P requirements. Additionally, we observed an inverse relationship between 24-hour urinary excretions of P and Ca in response to P intake. Therefore, calculation of the Ca to P ratio in urine was proposed as a potential indicator of overall P status. The collection of urine over a 24-hour period is considered the gold standard for methods to analyze renal solute excretion. However, urine collections based on random spot-samples, instead of 24-hour collections, would facilitate the use of urinary P measurements as a practical application for monitoring P status in sow herds. The objective of our third study was to evaluate the reliability of using Ca to P ratio measured in spot urine samples to assess adequacy of P intake in gestating and lactating sows. Urine Ca to P ratio was greater in sows fed P-deficient diets than sows fed P-adequate diets (P 0.05). As D-[alpha]-tocopheryl acetate increased in the sow's diet, concentrations of [alpha]-tocopherolincreased (P 0.03) in sow plasma, colostrum, milk, pig plasma, and pig heart. Regression analysis indicated that the bioavailability coefficients for D-[alpha]-tocopheryl acetate relative to DL-[alpha]-tocopheryl acetate ranged from 2.1 to 4.2 for sow and pig plasma [alpha]-tocopherol,2.9 to 3.0 for colostrum [alpha]-tocopherol,1.6 for milk [alpha]-tocopherol,1.8 for heart [alpha]-tocopherol, and 2.0 for liver [alpha]-tocopherol. Overall, this study indicates that the relative bioavailability for D-[alpha]-tocopheryl acetate relative to DL-[alpha]-tocopheryl acetate varies depending on the response criteria but is greater than the standard potency value of 1.36. Increasing sow gestation feeding level by 0.9 kg from d 90 of gestation through farrowing reduced (P = 0.001) daily lactation feed intake in gilts, but also resulted in improved conception rate in gilts, whereas increasing late gestation feeding level decreased conception rate in sows (interaction; P = 0.03).
