Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swirl flows are used in a wide range of industrial applications. In non-reacting cases, examples of applications include vortex amplifiers and reactors, heat exchangers, jet pumps, and cyclone separators. In reacting cases, swirlers are widely used in combustion systems, such as gas turbines, industrial furnaces, boilers, gasoline and diesel engines, and many other practical heating devices. Effects of using swirl on flow and combustion are significant and varied, and concern, for example, aerodynamics, mixing, flame stability, intensity of combustion, and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this book is to present recent research efforts to understand and characterize swirling flows of different types and in different applications. These include gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels in order to enhance combustion systems and their energy efficiency. Swirl flows are very complex and the studies proposed in this project are based on different means, including theoretical calculations, numerical modeling, and experimental measurements.

Book On the Stability of Flow in Rotating Pipes

Download or read book On the Stability of Flow in Rotating Pipes written by Hassan M. Nagib and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stability of flow in rotating pipes is investigated experimentally. The results of the investigation also have a bearing on the stability of flow in the core of swirling flows in stationary ducts and free vortices. Solid body rotation is found to have a destabilizing effect when superposed on a pipe entrance region axial velocity profile. The range of swirl ratios up to four is investigated using two different approaches: dye streaks visualization and hot-thermistor anemometry. As the swirl ratio is increased from zero to four, the axial Reynolds number at which laminar flow breaks down decreases from 2500 to 900. These results agree in trend with the limit axial Reynolds number value of 82.9 that was recently obtained by analytical investigations of the stability of a viscous fully developed axial velocity profile subject to a rapid, almost rigid rotation in pipes. The present results also suggest that the destabilizing trend due to solid body rotation may also hold for other axial velocity profiles and indicates a possible new mechanism of confined flow instability that takes place at lower Reynolds numbers than previously believed possible.

Book Dynamics of Swirling Flows Induced by Twisted Tapes in Circular Pipes

Download or read book Dynamics of Swirling Flows Induced by Twisted Tapes in Circular Pipes written by Radu Cazan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study describes the flow characteristics of swirling flows induced by twisted tape inserts in circular pipes. The study is focused on the secondary flow which is investigated experimentally and with numerical models. The results are expected to improve the paper manufacturing process by identifying and removing the detrimental secondary flow. Experimental tests show for the first time the existence of two co-rotating helical vortices superimposed over the main swirling flow, downstream of twisted tapes. The close proximity of the two co-rotating vortices creates a local counter-rotating flow at the pipe centerline. The flow is analyzed using LDV measurements and high speed camera visualization with fine air bubbles seeding which confirm that the helical vortices are stable. After extracting the characteristic tangential velocity profiles of the main vortex and of the two secondary vortices, it was observed that the maximum tangential velocity of all three vortices is the same, approximately half of the bulk velocity. The winding of the helical vortices is in the swirl direction and the pitch of the helical vortices is found to be independent of the inlet velocity. The experimental findings are confirmed by numerical simulations. The numerical results show that the helical vortices originate inside the swirler and evolve from single co-rotating vortices on each side of the tape. The flow characteristics are analyzed in detail. Swirlers with multiple twists and multiple chambers are shown to have less stable secondary motion and could be employed in applications were the secondary motion is detrimental.
