Book Fabrication and Fatigue Evaluation of Welded Tee and Tubular Joints for Structures in a Marine Environment

Download or read book Fabrication and Fatigue Evaluation of Welded Tee and Tubular Joints for Structures in a Marine Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report of a program in four separate parts on full penetration T-joints in plates and an assessment of the effects that attachment plate thickness and overall weld profile have on the fatigue life. In Phase I on attachment thickness, 51 T-joints were fatigue tested at constant amplitude bending loads with an R ratio of 0.05, with the crack shape and its development monitored using multi-probe potential drop techniques and beach marking. In Phase II's study of initiation life, 13 cruciform joints with fillet welds deposited by the shielded metal arc process were tested under constant amplitude loading using R ratios of 0 and -1. To establish a simple correlation between stress concentration factors (SCF) and stress intensity factors (SIF) and to develop a method for determination of SIF for semi-elliptical weld toe cracks in Phase III, weld toe SCFs were determined for joint and weld geometries used in the program by finite element methods. Phase IV tested a spare stiffened tubular joint from Phase II in axial loading at various test parameters.

Book Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Tubular Joints

Download or read book Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Tubular Joints written by Xiaochun Yao and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, important aspects of nonlinear behavior of tubular joints are numerically investigated with a finite element procedure including geometric and material nonlinearities. The numerical results give a clear and convincing physical interpretation of the effects of external loads on the ultimate static strength of tubular joints. The results include the stress redistribution within the joint at the ultimate state, the stiffness of the T-type joints at different load levels, the real failure modes of tubular joints under external loads and the assessment of the safety margins in the design process. The loading types applied to the joints include axial compression from the brace, axial tension, in-plane bending, combined loads of axial compression and in-plane bending. Based upon the numerical tests of a typical joints under six different combinations of in-plane bending and axial compression, the interaction equations in different design codes are verified. The safely margins hidden in these interaction equations are evaluated in two different ways. The first evaluation is based upon the "theoretical accurate" ultimate capacity of simple load $Psb{u}$ or $Msb{u}$. The second evaluation is based upon the predicted $bar Psb{u}$ or $bar Msb{u}$ values calculated with the current API design recommendation. It is the writer's hope that the research work in this study would help to bring about a comprehensive design criterion, which brings together available knowledge of theoretical results, physical understanding and laboratory research in a form suitable for practical design use.

Book Finite Element Analysis of Stress Concentration in Tubular T joints

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of Stress Concentration in Tubular T joints written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes the analytical investigation of stressdistribution in tubular T-joint for axial and in-plane bendingload cases. The results of the study on distribution of surfacestresses along the brace-chord intersection, including through-thickness variation and hot spot stress concentration factors arepresented and compared with those reported in the literature. The effect of shallow weld toe cracks (both hair-line crack andcrack depth equal to half the chord wall thickness) on stressredistribution are discussed.

Book Design of Welded Tubular Connections

Download or read book Design of Welded Tubular Connections written by P.W. Marshall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although tubular structures are reasonably well understood by designers of offshore platforms, onshore applications often suffer from "learning curve" problems, particularly in the connections, tending to inhibit the wider use of tubes. This book was written primarily to help this situation. Representing 25 years of work by one of the pioneers in the field of tubular structures, the book covers research, synthesis of design criteria, and successful application to the practical design, construction, inspection, and lifetime monitoring of major structures. Written by the principal author of the AWS D1.1 Code Provisions for Tubular Structures this book is intended to be used in conjunction with the AWS Structural Welding Code - Steel, AWS D1.1-88 published by the American Welding Society, Miami, FL, USA. Users of this Code, writers of other codes, students and researchers alike will find it an indispensable source of background material in their work with tubular structures.

Book Static Strength of Cracked Joints in Tubular Members

Download or read book Static Strength of Cracked Joints in Tubular Members written by Frederick Michael Burdekin and published by . This book was released on 2002-03-20 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the research which has been carried out from the 1980s to 2000 into the effect of cracks on the static strength of tubular joints. The effects of cracks on both plastic collapse and fracture are considered for a range of different types of joint geometry. The main geometries considered are T, Y, DT and K tubular joints with cracks around the weld toe in the chord and plain brace members with circumferential cracks. The information available consists of experimental test data and the results of a series of finite element analysis investigation
