Book Testing and Assessment in Counseling Practice

Download or read book Testing and Assessment in Counseling Practice written by C. Edward Watkins, Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this revision remains identical to that of the first edition--to show how key personality, cognitive/behavioral, and vocational tests/assessment procedures can be used by counselors in their work with clients. Too often, assessment books only provide the reader with information about tests and assessment procedures. They do not, however, take the next step--showing readers how these tests/assessment procedures can be used and integrated into the actual work of counseling. This revision is designed to fill that void. Chapter authors, all of whom are experts in their respective topic areas, share the theoretical and research backgrounds about a particular test/assessment procedure and then provide a case example or examples to show how assessment data can be meaningfully incorporated into the counseling process.

Book Differences in Psychological Indices Between Third and First Year Student Nurses

Download or read book Differences in Psychological Indices Between Third and First Year Student Nurses written by Barbara M. McIntosh and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two groups of student nurses varying in High School academic achievement and in nursing training were administered three group, paper and pencil tests designed to measure personality, intellectual, and inter¬ est variables. Three hypotheses were tested concerned respectively with differences between the two groups in 1) personality characteristics, 2) intellectual ability, and 3) ability to estimate their interest in the Nursing profession. The subjects consisted of the population of third year (N^= 110) and first year students (N]_= 124) in training in a three year diploma course at the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada., during the 1962-63 academic year. The tests employed were the California Psychological Inventory, an abbreviated form of the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence scale Form 1, consisting of four Verbal subtests (referred to as V.I.C.S.) and the Strong Vocational Interest Blank. Hypothesis 1, which stated that third year students would score higher than the first year group on four scales of the C.P.I. (Re, (Responsibility) So, (Socialization) To, (Tolerance) Sc (Selfcontrol)), was only in part supported in that significant differences in the expected direction were found on the To and Sc scales but not on Re and So. On seven other C.P.I. scales, the third year students scored significantly higher than first year group. Part a, of Hypothesis 2, was not confirmed. It was predicted that the third year students would achieve a higher Verbal I.Q. score on the V.I.C.S than would the first year group. Analysis of the test results indicated the reverse to be true. Test results indicated support for Part b of hypothesis 2, in which it was predicted that the third year students would score higher on the Information subtest of the V.I.C.S. Hypothesis 3j which stated that the third year students would be better able to estimate their interest in the nursing profession than would the first year group, was supported by the test findings. In addition, ratings regarding overall proficiency and suit¬ ability, were obtained from nursing educators on staff, and comparisons were made, within each year, between nursing students rated "high" and those rated "low". Personality, intellectual and interest characteristics of the average third and first year student were described as well as the average "high" and "low" rated student within each year. Possible directions for further research were suggested.

Book The Mediating Role of Flow in the Relation Between Personality Traits and Performance

Download or read book The Mediating Role of Flow in the Relation Between Personality Traits and Performance written by Alexandra Wagner and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a number of studies which have investigated the relationship between academic performance and the Big Five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism), however, the findings in existing research are inconsistent and it seems academic performance may depend at least partially on factors besides just personality. There seems to be something missing or unaccounted for when trying to describe how personality can affect academic performance. The present study suggests the gap between academic performance and personality traits might be explained by theories of flow. Multiple regression and mediation analyses were conducted with data from 56 first year bachelor students from the University of St. Gallen. The data was used to build an integrated model exploring the relationship between personality traits, academic performance and flow (an enhanced state of concentration and complete absorption). Results revealed that certain personality traits like conscientiousness and neuroticism predict academic performance more clearly than others, and the same traits that help to predict academic performance are more conducive to entering a state of flow. Moreover, the findings revealed that flow plays a crucial mediating role in the relationship between the before mentioned personality traits and academic performance. The study therefore sheds light on the key role that individual student personalities play in educational settings, while also revealing that personality traits alone do not ensure good academic performance. In fact, the results of the present study emphasize the importance of creating a learning environment conducive to flow.

Book Personality Factors Personal Values and Aptitude as Predictors of Academic Performance of Nursing Students

Download or read book Personality Factors Personal Values and Aptitude as Predictors of Academic Performance of Nursing Students written by Jeny B. Palabasan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prediction of college grades as a measure of academic performance from individual differences variables has been broadly investigated with a shift emphasis from cognitive predictors to the role of non-cognitive predictors. In this research, the influences of both cognitive and non-cognitive factors in relation to academic performance in higher education were investigated by a descriptive-correlational analysis. This study examined the role of the personality traits, personal values, and aptitude as predictors of academic performance of nursing students. A total of 88 (63 females and 25 males) second year regular nursing students who were enrolled during the second semester of the School Year 2008-2009 in one of the colleges in Manila participated in the study. Their mean age was 18, ranging from 16-24 and with a standard deviation of 1. 2. Research instrumentation includes: 16 Personality Factors (16PFi), Career Orientation Placement Evaluation Survey (COPES), and Nursing Aptitude Test (NAT). Their Grade Weighted Average (GWA) is used to assess their academic performance. Descriptive statistics and correlations were calculated. Data analyses revealed that in terms of personality factors, there is significant negative moderate correlation between academic performance and Reasoning at r = -.463 and both significant negative low correlation on Privateness (r= -.285) and Tension(r = -.295). On the other hand, personal values revealed to have both significant low correlation on Leadership vs. Supportive r =.245 and recognition vs. Privacy at r = .220. With regards to aptitude, a significant negative moderate correlation between academic performance and Verbal Ability is identified at r =-.429 and a significant negative low correlation on Science and Health Information at r=-.335. Regression analysis was conducted and result indicated that Privateness contributed the greatest amount of variation which is 88 percent on academic performance. The study has important implications for institutions aiming for the enhancement of the academic performance of their students and early identitification of students who are at risk and has been critical in their academic performance especially of the nursing students.
