Book Student Attitudes Toward the Residence Hall Program at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse

Download or read book Student Attitudes Toward the Residence Hall Program at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse written by Susan J. Pelton and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate student attitudes toward the residence hall program at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. The study attempted to determine whether sex of the resident, class standing of the resident, size of the residence hall, age of the head resident, or employment as a student resident assistant significantly affected student attitudes toward the residence hall program. A twenty per cent random sample of the total population of each of the ten residence halls plus the entire staff of residence assistants were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward the residence hall program that were investigated were general hall living conditions, the individual resident, fellow residents, the hall council, the resident assistant, and the head resident. An analysis of variance was used to determine if any significant differences existed between sub-groups in their attitudes toward the six areas of the residence hall program: 1. Resident assistants were more positive than general residents in their attitudes toward general hall living conditions, themselves as individual residents, the resident assistant, and the head resident. 2. Upperclassmen were more positive than underclassmen in their attitudes toward themselves as individual residents, the head resident, and the resident assistant. 3. Female residents expressed more positive attitudes than male residents toward fellow residents and the hall council. 4. Residents of the larger halls were more positive toward fellow residents than residents of the smaller halls. 5. Residents of the smaller halls expressed more positive attitudes toward the resident assistant than residents of the larger halls. 6. Residents of halls administered by a younger head resident expressed more positive attitudes toward the head resident than residents of the other halls.

Book Student Learning in College Residence Halls

Download or read book Student Learning in College Residence Halls written by Gregory S. Blimling and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Add value to the student experience with purposeful residential programs Grounded in current research and practical experience, Student Learning in College Residence Halls: What Works, What Doesn't, and Why shows how to structure the peer environment in residence halls to advance student learning. Focusing on the application of student learning principles, the book examines how neurobiological and psychosocial development influences how students learn in residence halls. The book is filled with examples, useful strategies, practical advice, and best practices for building community and shaping residential environments that produce measureable learning outcomes. Readers will find models for a curriculum-based approach to programming and for developing student staff competencies, as well as an analysis of what types of residential experiences influence student learning. An examination of how to assess student learning in residence halls and of the challenges residence halls face provide readers with insight into how to strategically plan for the future of residence halls as learning centers. The lack of recent literature on student learning in college residence halls belies the changes that have taken place. More traditional-age students are enrolled in college than ever before, and universities are building more residence halls to meet the increased demand for student housing. This book addresses these developments, reviews contemporary research, and provides up-to-date advice for creating residence hall environments that achieve educationally purposeful outcomes. Discover which educational benefits are associated with living in residence halls Learn how residential environments influence student behavior Create residence hall environments that produce measureable learning outcomes Monitor effectiveness with a process of systematic assessment Residence halls are an integral part of the college experience; with the right programs in place they can become dynamic centers of student learning. Student Learning in College Residence Halls is a comprehensive resource for residence hall professionals and others interested in improving students' learning experience.

Book A Comparison Between the Attitudes of Male Residence Hall Students and Student Leaders Toward Specified Acts of Student Behavior

Download or read book A Comparison Between the Attitudes of Male Residence Hall Students and Student Leaders Toward Specified Acts of Student Behavior written by William Ross Wangen and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the acceptance of specified kinds of student behavior of three selected residence hall. groups at Oregon State University: male elected residence hall leaders (N = 50), male appointed residence hall judicial board members (N = 50), and a random sample of men living in the residence halls (N = 50). The participants in the study were administered the Opinion Scale on Student Behavior during a three-week period in March, 1970. This standardized instrument consists of 100 common student offenses classified into the categories of General Conduct, Drug Use, Mischief, Sex Offenses, Drinking, Cheating, and Theft. Participants in the study rated each item on a seven-point scale from "generally acceptable" to "vicious, a serious crime." Eighty-six percent of the initial group of participants returned the instrument. Additional students were selected, using the same sampling technique as was used in selecting the initial participants, until 150 completed instruments were returned, i. e., 50 in each sample. An analysis of variance statistical model was used to compare the opinions of the three groups about each of the seven scales of the instrument. When a difference at the . 01 percent or .05 percent level of significance occurred, a test of least significant difference was applied to determine which group or groups contributed to the difference. Null hypotheses for differences among the three groups of residence hall students in over-all behavior standards and in each of the seven scales of the instrument were tested. Null hypotheses for differences between the appointed judicial board members and the random sample of men living in the residence halls in over-all behavior standards and in the Drug Use and Mischief categories were rejected. The null hypotheses for differences between the appointed judicial board members and the elected student leaders in over-all behavior standards and in the category of Mischief were rejected. The following differences among the three groups involved in the study were observed: The appointed men residence hall student judicial board members rated the over-all full scale items significantly less acceptable than did the random sample of men living in the residence halls. The appointed men residence hall. student judicial board members rated the full scale items significantly less acceptable than did the random sample of elected men residence hall student leaders. The appointed men residence hall student judicial board members rated the drug use items significantly less acceptable than did the random sample of men living in the residence halls. The appointed men residence hall student judicial board members rated the mischief items significantly less acceptable than did the random sample of elected men residence hall student leaders. The appointed men residence hall student judicial board members rated the mischief items significantly less acceptable than did the random sample of men living in the residence halls. No significant differences were discovered among the compared groups in standards related specifically to the following categories: general conduct, sex offenses, drinking, cheating, and theft. In addition, differences between other paired groups on the drug use, mischief, and over-all scales were not significant.

Book A Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of Residence Hall Student Government and Selected Perceptions and Characteristics of Resident Hall Student Staff Members and Student Government Officers

Download or read book A Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of Residence Hall Student Government and Selected Perceptions and Characteristics of Resident Hall Student Staff Members and Student Government Officers written by William C. Bachman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was concerned with determining if: (1) the effectiveness of residence hall student government varies according to the perceptions of its role held by residence hall student staff and government officers, and the hall type and population; (2) the perception of hall student government held by student staff varies according to their age, time in position and gender; and (3) the perception of hall student government by student officers varies according to their age, time in office and gender. The survey population included 48 residence hall directors, 209 student staff and 281 student officers from northwestern land grant universities. Hall directors were surveyed to determine perceived effectiveness of their hall's student government, and the resident population. Student staff and officer perceptions of the role of hall student government were obtained by utilizing the government section of the Residence Hall Attitude Scale (Murphy 1971). Age, gender, time in position or office and type of hall were also provided by the students. Multiple regression analysis was used to test three hypotheses at a .05 level of significance. Of the hypothesized relationships, only gender was found to be significantly related to the variance in perceptions of role of hall student government. In the case of both student staff and officers, women were more favorable toward residence hail student government than men. The combined independent variables of age, gender and time in position or office were found, however, to account for only small percentages (4.4%, staff; 7.8%, officers) of the total variance. The regression equation for effectiveness of hall student government failed to account for significant variance due to any of the independent variables of student staff and officer perceptions, type or population of hall. All variables combined accounted for only 7.7% of the variance in perception. The results of this research suggest that hypothesized relationships between various demographic factors and perceptions, and effectiveness of residence hall student government do not exist. This indicates that some other variables must be used to attempt prediction of either effectiveness or role perceptions of hall student government.
