Book Principals and Student Achievement

Download or read book Principals and Student Achievement written by Kathleen Cotton and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2003-10-15 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the direct and indirect influences of principals on student achievement? How do successful principals motivate others? What kinds of relationships do they have with parents, students, and staff? Principals and Student Achievement identifies 26 essential traits and behaviors of effective principals to show how they achieve success as instructional leaders. Based on a review of 81 key research articles from the last 20 years, this concise book examines how certain practices can affect student achievement, including: * Communication and interaction * Classroom observation and feedback to teachers * Recognition of student and staff achievement * Dedication to a safe and orderly school environment * Support of professional development of staff * Role modeling The book also reviews differences in instructional leadership between elementary and secondary principals, male and female principals, principals in high- and low-socioeconomic-status schools, and more. We all know that principals are important to student success, but few people have pinpointed exactly how they make a positive difference. At a time when principals are being asked to do more for school reform and accountability, Principals and Student Achievement provides a valuable resource for identifying what it takes to be an effective principal and, in turn, an effective school. Book An Exploration of Connections Between a Principal s Leadership Style and the Academic Achievement Gap

Download or read book An Exploration of Connections Between a Principal s Leadership Style and the Academic Achievement Gap written by Khalid Almasnaah and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored possible connections between school principals' leadership styles and behaviors and closing the student achievement gap at three schools serving high poverty student populations. Two of the three schools were high schools designated as Priority Schools in 2012 as a result of student achievement that ranked in the bottom 5% of all Michigan schools. The two schools managed to exit the Priority designation in 2017 after implementing school culture and instruction reforms that improved student achievement. The third school was a K-8, which was not designated as a Priority School. It had the same student demographics as the Priority Schools, and it is located in the same district as one of them. It was added to the study to reinforce the data. The researcher conducted 17 interviews. A bottom-up inductive coding approach was adopted for the qualitative data analysis. The researcher assigned emerging themes specific and meaningful codes relevant to the topic and purpose of the study. Based on the data from the three schools, a possible connection between school leadership and closing the student achievement gap was found. The three principals adopted practices and behaviors relevant to multiple leadership styles. They did not limit themselves to only one leadership style or a set of behaviors. The two Priority School principals had to undo the negative impact of the former toxic culture. The three principals instituted a positive school culture based on trust, respect, collaboration, and accountability. They indirectly impacted student achievement by improving the schools' culture and climate and enhancing the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and data-driven interventions. They worked with all the stakeholders to align and streamline all the efforts and programs into well-coordinated plans and established common language and practices regarding teaching and learning. They involved all the teachers in the decision making about teaching and learning.

Book An Investigation of the Relationship Between Administrator Leadership Style and Teacher Morale

Download or read book An Investigation of the Relationship Between Administrator Leadership Style and Teacher Morale written by Surjit Kaur Bhella and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industry, business, military and other government agencies are increasingly recognizing the significance of human factors in the productivity of complex organizations. Educational institutions are no exception to this fact. It is assumed that morale and productivity are related to the managerial style of the supervisor. Leaders are faced with the challenge of directing the work group toward the target of increased productivity while at the same time maximizing member satisfaction. The basic research problem of this study was to investigate the relationship between leadership style of high school principals (in terms of their Concern for Production and Concern for People) and certain dimensions of teacher morale. The null hypothesis which guided this study was that there was no significant relationship between teacher perceptions of administrative behavior and teacher morale. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 132 teachers from ten high schools in the state of Oregon. The results are based on 126 returns, 90 male and 36 female respondents. Principal Leadership Style Questionnaire was used to measure two dimensions (Concern for People and Concern for Production) of administrative behavior. Purdue Teacher Opinionaire was used to measure ten factors of teacher morale. All hypotheses were tested at .05 level of confidence. The first primary hypothesis asserting that there would be no partial correlation between administrative dimensions and Teacher Rapport with Principal was rejected. The second primary hypothesis that there would be no partial correlation between administrative dimensions and Satisfaction with Teaching was accepted. Partial correlation was 4ppliedto analyze the primary hypotheses by eliminating the effects of secondary hypotheses (Rapport Among Teachers, Teacher Salary, Teacher Load, Curriculum Issues, Teacher Status, Community Support of Education, School Facilities, Community Pressures, Age and Sex). T-test based on regression coefficients was applied to analyze the secondary hypotheses. Out of 20 secondary hypotheses tested, five of them were rejected. Analysis of the primary and secondary hypotheses concluded that Curriculum Issues, Rapport with Principal and Teacher Salary are positively related to both the dimensions of administrative behavior. Rapport Among Teachers was positively related to Concern for People but not Production. Satisfaction with Teaching, Teacher Load, Teacher Status, Community Support of Education, School Facilities and Services, Community Pressures, Age and Sex of the teachers are not related to the perceived leadership style of the principal. Teachers Satisfaction with Teaching is probably related mostly to those things that happen directly with pupils inside the classroom over which principals have little influence. Results of the two administrative dimensions indicated that a principal's leadership behavior is perceived by his faculty in various ways. However, on the average, administrators were rated high on both the "Production" and "People" dimensions of administrative behavior and perceived as having a "6,7" or "7,8" leadership style as described by Blake and Mouton (1964). Analysis of this research further suggest that educational administrators investigated in this study seem to have above average skills in the eyes of their faculty in promoting both goal achievement and member satisfaction. It is recommended that the design of this study be replicated on a larger teacher population and sample size in different geographical areas.

Book An Analysis of the Relationship of Perceived Assistant Principal Instructional Leadership Behaviors and Student Academic Achievement at the High School Level

Download or read book An Analysis of the Relationship of Perceived Assistant Principal Instructional Leadership Behaviors and Student Academic Achievement at the High School Level written by Michael Todd Jones and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of the study was to determine what correlational and descriptive relationships could be found between self-perceived leadership behaviors of assistant principals and campus student achievement at the high school level. The study was based on the research by Marzano, Waters, and McNulty (2003) that identified 21 leadership behaviors. A total of 200 assistant principals at the high school level in Texas were surveyed. Respondents were selected from the 20 Educational Service Center regions of the state. A random sample of high schools with four population levels were selected for the study. Of the potential 200 participants, 23 respondents completed the survey. The study used a stratified random sampling procedure to identify assistant principals across the state. A Pearson correlation was used to determine any statistical significance or correlation to campus student achievement in relationships to assistant principal self-perceived behaviors. Population of the study was N = 23. Results of the study suggest that there were some positive relationships between self-perceived leadership behaviors and student achievement. Some behaviors indicated positive relationship to leadership behaviors. STAAR campus achievement scores from 2014-2015 were used to identify potential relationships to these behaviors. Three content areas were covered which included content areas of All Subjects, Math, and Reading at the high school level. In All Subjects, small positive correlations were found between leadership behaviors and campus student achievement. In Math, there were positive correlations and some statistical significance found. For Reading, positive correlations and some statistical significance was found. Future recommendations would be to explore specific leadership behavior traits with a larger population to determine if any relationships exists between leadership behavior and campus student achievement.
