A summary section includes the conclusion that field experience in teacher education is threatened by "the lack of commitment by higher education, the low status of clinical faculty, the lack of objective evaluation criteria, the loss of control to teacher unions and state legislatures, and the lack of relationship between field and campus study." In addition to 11 recommendations for improving field programs, descriptions of 17 exemplary field experience programs in the United States and Canada are appended, along with references. (JD)

Book excerpt: This review of selected research on the practices of teaching and teacher preparation juxtaposes the models for conducting inquiry on teaching and teacher education with a synthesis of research on what is currently known. Chapter 1 presents several models for research on teaching and teacher education and presents some research findings according to categories of variables posited by the models. In the context of the Coleman Report and responses to it, Chapter 2 summarizes 22 effective schools studies, indicates 7 limitations of such research, and suggests ways effective schools research can inform both preservice and inservice teacher education. Chapter 3 presents a rationale for the importance of such investigations and reviews four recent studies on effective K-12 educational practice. Chapter 4 describes how inquiry on teaching has been conducted, presents some significant findings, and discusses both limitations and utilization of such research. Chapter 5 reviews research on teacher education according to four categories: preservice teachers, preservice curriculum and instruction, the education professoriate, and the context of teacher preparation. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze data pertinent to identifying the differences and similarities in the design and implementation of field experiences for pre-service science teachers in institutions of higher education in the State of Missouri. Directors of field experience from 25 Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) that prepare both elementary and secondary science teachers and 5 additional IHE that prepare only elementary teachers were surveyed using a 48-item Likert scale instrument designed for this study. Data were collected on the hours of field experience in relation to science and other methods classes, distribution of field experience hours across the program, and total hours of field experience required. Comparisons were made between elementary and secondary science teacher preparation programs. Five areas of field experience were surveyed: design of early field experience, design of student teaching, support provided by IHE for cooperating schools, field experience assessment practices, and relationships between pre-service teachers, cooperating teachers and IHE educators.
