A. Toropov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing importance of chemical reactions at high and superhigh temperatures in crystalline, amorphous, and semicrystalline SOlids, as well as the reactions of these solids with gases, prompted the authors of this book to examine critically the literature available in this field and to present a general review of the subject. In this monograph we discuss those chemical and physicochemical points which we consider to be most important for solving a series of problems in the preparation and use of new inorganic materials. We hope that this book will be of interest to the many specialists working on inorganic materials. N. A. Toropov PREFACE Modem technology demands ever more materials with high mechanical strength, heat and chemical re sistance, fire resistance, special electrical properties, particular behavior toward active radiations, etc. The search for such materials requires the study of various chemical compounds, metallic alloys, and other fused in organic systems, especially oxide systems. Materials based on oxides begin to assume increasing importance in many fields of the new technology. In this connection the investigation of oxides and systems consisting of two and more oxides is expanding greatly.

Book Phenomenological Study of the Behavior of Some Silica Formers in a High Velocity Jet Fuel Burner

Download or read book Phenomenological Study of the Behavior of Some Silica Formers in a High Velocity Jet Fuel Burner written by James D. Cawley and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon based materials are under consideration of a number of applications in aircraft and automative gas turbine engines. The majority of these are monolithic components which benefit from the excellent high temperature strength of some of these materials, eg. sintered alpha silicon carbide and reaction bonded silicon nitride. Another possible application is employing these materials in turbine tip gas path seals. The structural requirement of this application is minimal, however dimensional stability is crucial. The silicon based material are unstable in the presence of oxygen at the high temperatures experienced in the engine. Protection from gross reaction is afforded when an adherent film of Si02 forms on the surface during oxidation. This film serves as a barrier across which mass transport must occur for further oxidation, leading to parabolic scale growth kinetics. The class of materials which displays this behavior is termed silica formers. Samplers of four silica formers: single crystal SiC, sintered alpha-SiC, reaction sintered Si3N4 and polycrystalline MoSi2, were subjected to a Mach 1 jet fuel burner for 1 hr, at a sample temperature of 1375 C (2500 F). Two phenomena were identified which may be deleterious to a gas turbine application of these materials.

Book Adhesive Restorative Dental Materials

Download or read book Adhesive Restorative Dental Materials written by D. L. Venezky and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new adhesive restorative dental material must meet rigid requirements. These must be kept in mind in screening inorganic polymer systems reported in the literature; but since the available literature data are limited, only three requirements-toxicity, chemical stability, and ease of manipulation-were used in this evaluation. The problem was approached by considering polymers according to the group number of the elements contained in the polymer backbone. The inorganic polymers were in turn grouped into three classes: Class 1, polymers having only one element in the polymer backbone; Class 2, polymers having two different elements in the backbone; and Class 3, polymers having three or more different elements in the backbone. Inorganic polymer systems which appear most promising for use as dental materials are the Class 2 polymers containing linear silicon-oxygen backbones and Class 2 polymers containing boron-phosphorus or phosphorusnitrogen ring systems as moieties in the backbone. Book Hydrothermal Reactions for Materials Science and Engineering

Download or read book Hydrothermal Reactions for Materials Science and Engineering written by S. Somiya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the late Professor Emeritus Seitaro Tsuboi,l the word 'hydrothermal' was used as early as 1849 by a British geologist, Sir Roderick Murchison (1792-187 I), in relation to the action of heated water in bringing about change in the earth's crust. The term abounds in later geological literature, and is most frequently met in connection with the processes that take place at a stage near the closing in the course of consolidation of magma. When a cooling magma reaches that stage, the residual liquid contains a large proportion of volatile components, chiefly water, and further cooling results in the formation of minerals of special interest or ore-deposits. A great concern of Tsuboi's as a petrologist was to elucidate the details of the nature of various actions involved in these 'hydrothermal processes', of which little was known. It is remarkable that, in the last few decades, extensive high-temperature and high-pressure experiments, in which water plays an important role, have become practicable in laboratories, owing to the development of new apparatus and new methods. As a result, the knowledge essential to the elucidation of 'hydrothermal processes' has been improved, but is still far from complete.
