Download or read book The Wilderness Debate Rages on written by Michael P. Nelson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago, The Great New Wilderness Debate began a cross-disciplinary conversation about the varied constructions of "wilderness" and the controversies that surround them. The Wilderness Debate Rages On will reinvigorate that conversation and usher in a second decade of debate. Like its predecessor, the book gathers both critiques and defenses of the idea of wilderness from a wide variety of perspectives and voices. The Wilderness Debate Rages On includes the best explorations of the concept of the concept of wilderness from the past decade, underappreciated essays from the early twentieth century that offer an alternative vision of the concept and importance of wilderness, and writings meant to clarify or help us rethink the concept of wilderness. Narrative writers such as Wendell Berry, Scott Russell Sanders, Marilynne Robinson, Kathleen Dean Moore, and Lynn Maria Laitala are also given a voice in order to show how the wilderness debate is expanding outside the academy. The writers represented in the anthology include ecologists, environmental philosophers, conservation biologists, cultural geographers, and environmental activists. The book begins with little-known papers by early twentieth-century ecologists advocating the preservation of natural areas for scientific study, not, as did Thoreau, Muir, and the early Leopold, for purposes of outdoor recreation. The editors argue that had these writers influenced the eventual development of federal wilderness policy, our national wilderness system would better serve contemporary conservation priorities for representative ecosystems and biodiversity.

Download or read book Values in Sustainable Development written by Jack Appleton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To enhance sustainable development research and practice the values of the researchers, project managers and participants must first be made explicit. Values in Sustainable Development introduces and compares worldviews and values from multiple countries and perspectives, providing a survey of empirical methods available to study environmental values as affected by sustainable development. The first part is methodological, looking at what values are, why they are important, and how to include values in sustainable development. The second part looks at how values differ across social contexts, religions and viewpoints demonstrating how various individuals may value nature from a variety of cultural, social, and religious points of view. The third and final part presents case studies ordered by scale from the individual and community levels through to the national, regional and international levels. These examples show how values can motivate, be incorporated into and be an integral part of the success of a project. This thought-provoking book gives researchers, students and practitioners in sustainable development a wealth of approaches to include values in their research.
Download or read book Green Chemistry Avant La Lettre The Pine Institute And Resin Chemistry In Aquitaine 1900 1970 written by Marcin Krasnodebski and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the foundations of the concept of sustainability were laid down and green chemistry became a hot topic, chemists had already been looking for alternative feedstocks hoping to liberate the industry from its dependency on fossil fuels. This book examines one such story. Near the largest French forest in the southwest of the country, in Aquitaine, a network of entrepreneurs of chemists established in the early 20th century the Pine Institute. This curious institution, working at the interface of academia and industry explored new uses for pine resin. It is used to produce not only solvents, glues, and paper, but also rocket fuels. The pine resin has been one of the most versatile raw materials known to humanity. This book not only explains the success of the material itself but also of the scientific-industrial network that made it possible to exploit it sustainably over many decades. Did the Pine Institute find a recipe for making the future more sustainable in the post-oil world? It carefully examines its organisational features, relations with the local economy, as well as the core elements of resin chemistry as an independent discipline prefigurating sustainable chemistry of today. This unique book constitutes an original and pioneering work on the origins of some of the ideas that are being labeled today as green or sustainable chemistry. It establishes a bridge between two worlds, explaining in detail the history of a sustainable scientific discipline in its institutional and economic setting accounting for the complexity of the relations between stakeholders and of the knowledge circulation patterns. In other words, the book fills a gap in the emerging field of social studies of scientific sustainability.
