Book excerpt: This blistering, fearless, and unforgettable literary novel finds a woman with everything on the line and a life-or-death decision waiting for her—perfect for fans of Claudia Rankine and Jenny Offill. Come of age in the credit crunch. Be civil in a hostile environment. Go to college, get an education, start a career. Do all the right things. Buy an apartment. Buy art. Buy a sort of happiness. But above all, keep your head down. Keep quiet. And keep going. The narrator of Assembly is a black British woman. She is preparing to attend a lavish garden party at her boyfriend’s family estate, set deep in the English countryside. At the same time, she is considering the carefully assembled pieces of herself. As the minutes tick down and the future beckons, she can’t escape the question: is it time to take it all apart? Assembly is a story about the stories we live within – those of race and class, safety and freedom, winners and losers. And it is about one woman daring to take control of her own story, even at the cost of her life. With a steely, unfaltering gaze, Natasha Brown dismantles the mythology of whiteness, lining up the debris in a neat row and walking away. "Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway meets Claudia Rankine's Citizen...as breathtakingly graceful as it is mercilessly true.”—Olivia Sudjic, author of Sympathy and Asylum Road A woman confronts the most important question of her life in this blistering, fearless, and unforgettable literary debut from "a stunning new writer." (Bernardine Evaristo) “A quiet, measured call to revolution…This is the kind of book that doesn’t just mark the moment things change, but also makes that change possible.”—Ali Smith, author of Summer "Brilliant. Brown's gaze is piercing."—Avni Doshi, author of Burnt Sugar

Book The Men of the First French Republic

Download or read book The Men of the First French Republic written by Alison Patrick and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972. The Men of the First French Republic analyzes some of the well-established evidence concerning deputies of the French National Convention of 1792. It was assumed that this evidence supported accepted generalizations about the convention's character and outlook. Patrick's examination of the convention as a whole, rather than its various groups of deputies (Plain, Mountain, and Gironde), suggests that a number of these generalizations may need revising. Patrick looks first at parliamentary behavior, particularly in the tumultuous first eight months, and then analyzes this behavior in terms of the deputies' background.

Book The Performance of Tribal Sarpanches in Andhra Pradesh

This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The local administration system in India has a vast history, extending from the ancient and medieval periods today. The local government system was, however, formally launched in 1882 by Lord Rippon, and is popularly known as Magna Carta. Article 40 of the Indian constitution states the directive principles of state policy and the importance of local government administration to the functioning of Indian democracy. The government of India has appointed several committees to focus on the functioning and restructuring of Panchayat Raj bodies, including the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act and the Burya committee recommendations, which gave importance to political reservation for the Scheduled Tribes in Panchayat Raj bodies. The PESA Act paved the way for the political empowerment of Scheduled Tribes in Panchayat raj systems, allowing them the opportunity to utilise various politico-administrative powers and functions. This book explores the role and performance of Scheduled Tribe Sarpanches in Panchayat Raj local bodies in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. It sheds light on the development of, and welfare activities undertaken by, the Sarpanches. Further, this book also reveals the utilization of powers, functions and grants by the Tribal Sarpanches, giving a vivid picture of the decision-making style of Scheduled Tribal Sarpanches at the grassroots level of the Panchayat Raj system.
