Book excerpt: The current study investigated the relationship between athletic identity and Big-Five personality traits within collegiate athletes. This study also assessed the differences between collegiate athletes and non-collegiate athletes on the Big-Five personality traits. Division I team sport athletes from James Madison University were surveyed along with non-collegiate athletes from the same university. Collegiate athletes differed from non-athletes on the traits of Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness and in their levels of athletic identity. In addition, a significant relationship was found between athletic identity and the traits of Neuroticism, Openness, and Extraversion, which differed for male and female athletes. Implications for future research and coaches regarding their athletes is discussed.
