Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences on student achievement among seventh and eighth grade students who were in a one to one computing environment and those who were not. The conducted study was a causal-comparative research design. A treatment group and a comparison group were identified within the same district. This study measured differences in change along with mean scores between first and third trimesters, between and among both groups. Data were reported for English language learners, students with disabilities, and English only learners. The research examined the hypothesis that there is a significant difference in change or mean between first trimester language arts scores, writing scores, and seventh grade writing CST scores between students in the treatment group and those in the comparison group. The data showed statistically significant results reported either on an ANOVA or ANCOVA for the subgroup category of ELL in the areas of 7th grade writing. When comparing the treatment group and comparison group significant results were found with the overall outcome of change or difference in 8th grade writing scores.

Book excerpt: As school districts continue to adopt new technologies and implement one-to-one student laptop initiatives, questions still remain about how this impacts student achievement (Logan, 2016). High school students in the United States continue to rank lower than students in other countries, specifically in reading (National Center for Education Statistics, 2014). Many qualitative and quantitative studies about one-to-one laptop programs in schools have investigated teacher and leader perceptions of classroom technology and its impact on student achievement in the initial implementation phase of the initiative. Results have been generally positive (Zheng, et. al., 2016). This study investigated the perceptions of 8 English/Language Arts teachers and 3 principals after 5 years of a high school one-to-one laptop initiative in a large, urban school district. The 2 research questions that guided this study were as follows: (1) What are high school English/Language Arts teacher perceptions about the value of one-to-one student devices in year 5 of a high school laptop initiative, and (2) what are the perceptions of principals about the value of one-to-one student devices in year 5 of a high school laptop initiative? Teachers and principals were purposefully selected at 3 different schools in a large, urban school district. Using qualitative methods with an interpretivist approach, open-ended teacher and principal interviews were the primary tool of data collection for this exploratory study. Transcriptions from interviews were coded using multiple approaches to document common themes. The teacher findings showed that value of the one-to-one initiative was unanimously present in the following areas: (1) Higher-level learning, (2) equality in access including access to digital resources and to Google, (3) writing, (4) efficiency, and (5) searching. Principal findings showed the similar perceptions of higher-level learning and access but also included the theme of collaboration. In conclusion, this study poses questions for further qualitative and quantitative research in the area of one-to-one student technology in high school. Findings will add to the body of knowledge related to sustaining high school, one-to-one laptop programs and may also be used to inform district participation in one-to-one initiatives, professional development priorities, funding priorities for technology, and policies regarding standardized testing alignment to 21st Century skill development

Book excerpt: This qualitative research study examined the perceptions of elementary and secondary teachers and building level administrators regarding the impact of a one-to-one computing initiative on instructional practices and student learning. Data were collected from elementary and secondary teachers and building level administrators from four public school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania. This study incorporated the use of an electronic survey, two open-ended responses, and face-to-face interviews to garner data regarding the impact of the implementation of a one-to-one computing program. The findings of this study suggested that elementary and secondary teachers and building level administrators shared only some similarities in response to the survey questions. The study's results demonstrated that the instructional practices of teachers have been positively impacted by the implementation of the computing initiative. Teachers are now comfortable planning lessons that integrate the laptop into their classroom practice and, as a result, student computers are being utilized regularly for research, project-based and cooperative learning. The findings also revealed that teachers and administrators felt that student engagement and motivation had increased in the classroom as a result of the implementation of a one-to-one computing initiative. Building level administrators collectively reported that there was no evidence that student attendance increased or that student disciplinary issues decreased as a result of a one-to-one computing initiative. This study also acknowledged that ongoing, well-planned, systemic professional development that is collaborative and differentiated affected the success of a one-to-one computing initiative.

Book excerpt: School districts in the United Stated are investing large sums of money in educational technology. The investment is predicted to continue, with an increase in spending due to the explosion of 1-to-1 technology implementations such as iPads and Chromebooks. The additional funding available through the Federal E-Rate program significantly contributes to the expansion of classroom technology. However, research has found that singularly examining the impact technology has on student learning shows there is no consistent result. Other research has acknowledged this shortcoming with technology and has focused on teacher technology use skills, how teachers integrate technology in the classroom, teacher evaluation systems, and educational value-added systems. The research results of these factors indicate individually they can influence classroom learning. This study examined the impact of multiple variables on student academic growth. The variables were a teacher's self-efficacy of their Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) skills (gathered via a survey), the level of Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (SAMR) obtained in the classroom (reported through principal observation), and teacher effectiveness rating (end of year principal evaluation forms based on the Pennsylvania Teacher Evaluation Model). The study demographic was Northwestern Pennsylvania and the schools were located within the service area of the same educational service agency. Eight eighth grade language arts and mathematics teachers were included in the study. The results indicated two relationships. The first was between TK (Technology Knowledge) and Danielson's Domain Two (Classroom Environment). The second was between Danielson's Domain Three (Instruction) and the 2017 PVAAS PSSA Academic Growth Index.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative research study documents the observed and reported experiences of a social studies teacher and his eighth grade students when using laptop computers in a public school in an urban area. The author documents his summer training experiences preparing technology lesson plans and serving as an eighth grade technology mentor. The author examines the issues surrounding laptop storage, security and movement. The study suggests that laptop technology be employed as a teaching tool to enhance curriculum, not replace it. The 49 student participants were from four separate eighth grade classes of all abilities including English as Second Language Learners, gifted, and learning support students. All student participants in the study used a laptop computer to research information from the internet, create graphic organizers, produce presentation projects, and write various types of essays. The study suggests that most students of all ability levels enjoy using laptops, find them interesting, and are capable of using a variety of complex programs. The study examines the student's ongoing level of proficiency using laptop technology. The author plans on pursuing the development of student projects involving video and audio laptop technology. He questions how best to expand the use of technology to enhance student learning.
