Book excerpt: Increasing national emphasis on college completion and affordability has prompted institutional efforts to focus on increasing efficient degree attainment within four-years. Traditional predictors of four-year graduation, Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) scores and high school grade point average (GPA) may disproportionately negatively impact the enrollment of African American and Latino students who are more likely to receive lower scores on these metrics. This study sought to identify quantifiable non-academic metrics that can assist to predict bachelor's degree attainment in four years for African Americans and Latinos who do not meet typical standardized testing and scoring predictors. A regression analysis was performed on CIRP Freshmen Survey data for University of Texas at Austin students first enrolled in fall 2008 to assess the strength of Freshmen Survey constructs and student-level financial aid to predict graduation within a four-year timeframe. The results showed that the combined consideration of select variables increased the accuracy of prediction by over seven percentage points; moreover, two factors, holding a positive self-concept and likelihood of college involvement, demonstrated statistical significance within the model. While there are several study limitations, the findings offer support for further exploration of a model for predicting four-year graduation that considers non-academic data elements.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore factors that may contribute to the persistence and graduation rates of African American and Hispanic undergraduate males enrolled at regional four-year public universities in Texas. African American and Hispanic males have lower graduation rates in both secondary and post-secondary education than their White peers (Swail, Cabrera, Lee & Williams, 2013; Harper, 2010). This study utilized a mixed methods research design. The quantitative portion of the study provides descriptive data to exhibit the historical four-year and six-year graduation rates of African American, Hispanic and White males within the regional university. The qualitative portion of the study investigated characteristics which exist among African American and Hispanic undergraduate males who have persisted and were retained at the university through their senior academic year. Focus groups interviews were administered which allowed the researcher to explore the perceptions of African American and Hispanic males regarding academic and non-academic factors that may have served as supports and/or barriers to their persistence. A thematic analysis was conducted to evaluate relationships that may have occurred. The research provides more information on academic and non-academic factors that served as supports and/or barriers to their ultimate graduation.

Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book excerpt: African American males have the lowest 4-year college graduation rates compared to other ethnic groups, including African American females; however, 35.2% of African American males persist and graduate with Bachelor Degrees in the United States (U.S. Department of Education, 2013). This phenomenological qualitative research study explored the non-cognitive factors that influenced African American males’ ability to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree from predominantly White institutions. An anti-deficit framework was employed to explore the non-cognitive factors that influenced the participants’ ability to persevere and graduate at predominantly White institutions. The study was conducted in a Midwest state and focused on 16 African American males who were purposefully selected and graduated from private and/or public colleges and universities as traditional students, ages 18-26. Sixteen participants were interviewed using the phenomenological research design to garner their lived experiences, “in their own terms; in their own words” (Moustakas, 1994, p. 2). The research was guided by two overarching questions: What was your overall experience at a predominantly White college or university? and What non-cognitive factors influenced you to persist to graduation? The data was analyzed using the Nvivo 10 qualitative software tool for emergent themes, commonalities, descriptions, and phrases, using the Moustakas (1994) modified Van Kaam method of analysis. The results of this study suggest that African American males who utilize their parents and family as social capital, build their social capital through supportive peers, organizations and clubs, and encounter culturally responsive faculty and staff, have a better chance at completing their Bachelor’s Degree at predominantly White institutions. This study would benefit educational leaders and stake holders who are concerned with the low college graduation rates of African American males. This research would be helpful in understanding the non-cognitive factors that can influence African American males’ ability to persist to graduation.

Book excerpt: There are over 20 million young people of color in the United States whose representation in STEM education pathways and in the STEM workforce is still far below their numbers in the general population. Their participation could help re-establish the United States' preeminence in STEM innovation and productivity, while also increasing the number of well-educated STEM workers. There are nearly 700 minority-serving institutions (MSIs) that provide pathways to STEM educational success and workforce readiness for millions of students of colorâ€"and do so in a mission-driven and intentional manner. They vary substantially in their origins, missions, student demographics, and levels of institutional selectivity. But in general, their service to the nation provides a gateway to higher education and the workforce, particularly for underrepresented students of color and those from low-income and first-generation to college backgrounds. The challenge for the nation is how to capitalize on the unique strengths and attributes of these institutions and to equip them with the resources, exceptional faculty talent, and vital infrastructure needed to educate and train an increasingly critical portion of current and future generations of scientists, engineers, and health professionals. Minority Serving Institutions examines the nation's MSIs and identifies promising programs and effective strategies that have the highest potential return on investment for the nation by increasing the quantity and quality MSI STEM graduates. This study also provides critical information and perspective about the importance of MSIs to other stakeholders in the nation's system of higher education and the organizations that support them.

The report covers national degree completion data for three time intervals--4, 6, and 9 years--broken down by institutional type, student gender, and student race. Brief introductory sections define the purpose of the study and describe the methodology. Sixteen tables and supporting text present data for: attainment rates by institutional type, gender, and race; attainment rates by high school grades and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores; prediction of Bachelor Degree completion using different combinations of input variables; and regression analysis. The study also examines the data as they relate to historically black colleges and universities, finding few strong correlations. The final section of the report looks at some policy implications and suggests ways in which institutions can use the information provided by longitudinal studies to assess institutional performance and accountability. There are three appendixes: the first converts American College Testing (ACT) scores to SAT verbal and math equivalents; and second lists the regression variables by racial subgroups; and the third compares Cooperative Institutional Research Program retention rates with rates reported by the ACT program.
