Book Conflict in the African Great Lakes Region

Download or read book Conflict in the African Great Lakes Region written by Ladislas Bizimana and published by Universidad de Deusto. This book was released on 1999 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any analysis aimed at coming up with strategies to positively transform a confl ict has fi rst to identify all the actors involved and interests pursued, either individually or collectively. This rule applies best to protracted confl icts like the one under scrutiny. In this research study, Ladislas Bizimana tries to answer the most fundamental question: Who has been doing what, why, how in the bloody confl ict that continues to plunge the peoples of the African Great Lakes region into mourning? In doing so, Ladislas draws upon both his personal experience and professional background. As a Rwandan who lived through and survived the 1994 Rwandan horror, Ladislas speaks from within. This matchless, insightful and compelling testimony is enriched by his being a former TV and Radio reporter working for humanitarian agencies in the African Great Lakes region (1994-1995).

Book The Recurring Great Lakes Crisis

Download or read book The Recurring Great Lakes Crisis written by Jean-Pierre Chrétien and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1990s, the African Great Lakes region has experienced a series of traumas that have profoundly disrupted its geopolitical, economic, social, and demographic stability. Despite numerous peace accords, political compromises, and international interventions, the region has yet to eliminate the tensions that regularly manifest in hate and violence. Featuring contributions from historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and political scientists, this collection accounts for the omnipresent "metastases of hatred and violence" in the Great Lakes region. Through a series of detailed case studies, contributors outline the genealogy and historicity of violence in the region while remaining sensitive to the singular, contingent experiences of each country.

Book The East African Great Lakes Limnology Palaeolimnology and Biodiversity

Download or read book The East African Great Lakes Limnology Palaeolimnology and Biodiversity written by Eric O. Odada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second International Symposium on the East African Lakes was held from 10-15 January 2000 at Club Makokola on the southern shore of Lake Malawi. The symposium was organized by the International Decade for the East African Lakes (IDEAL), a research consortium of African, European and North American scientists interested in promoting the investigations of African Great Lakes as archives of environmental and climatic dynamics. Over one hundred African, European and North American scientists with special expertise in the tropical lakes participated in the symposium which featured compelling presentations on the limnology, climatology, palaeoclimatology and biodiversity of the East African Lakes. It is their papers that comprise this book. The large lakes of East Africa are important natural resources that are heavily utilized by their bordering countries for transportation, water supply, fisheries, waste disposal, recreation and tourism. The lakes are unique in many ways: they are sensitive to climatic change and their circulation dynamics, water-column chemistry and biological complexity differ significantly from large lakes at higher latitudes; they have long, continuous, high resolution records of past climatic change; and they have rich and diverse populations of endemic organisms. These unique properties and the significance of the palaeolimnological records demand and attract research interest from around the world.

Book The Path of a Genocide

Download or read book The Path of a Genocide written by Astri Suhrke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes region of Africa has seen dramatic changes. After a decade of war, repression, and genocide, loosely allied regimes have replaced old-style dictatorships. The Path of a Genocide examines the decade (1986-97) that brackets the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. This collection of essays is both a narrative of that event and a deep reexamination of the international role in addressing humanitarian issues and complex emergencies.Nineteen donor countries and seventeen multilateral organizations, international agencies, and international nongovernmental organizations pooled their efforts for an in-depth evaluation of the international response to the conflict in Rwanda. Original studies were commissioned from scholars from Uganda, Rwanda, Zaire, Ethiopia, Norway, Great Britain, France, Canada, and the United States. While each chapter in this volume focuses on one dimension of the Rwanda conflict, together they tell the story of this unfolding genocide and the world's response. The Path of a Genocide offers readers a perspective in sharp contrast to the tendency to treat a peace agreement as the end to conflict. This is a detailed effort to make sense of the political crisis and genocide in Rwanda and the effects it had on its neighbors.

Book Politics Religion and Power in the Great Lakes Region

Download or read book Politics Religion and Power in the Great Lakes Region written by Murindwa Rutanga and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book ... focuses on the European invasion of the GLR. It analyses the factors that underlay the invasion, the demarcation process that followed and the indigenous people’s responses to it. What is worth noting is that most of the anti-colonial struggles in the GLR were anchored in religion. Reference is made to the Maji Maji Rebellion, the Nyabingi Movement, the Lamogi Movement, Dini Ya Misambwa and the different independent churches that arose in the GLR during colonialism. Even the more secular Mau Mau Movement integrated religious cultural practices in its bondings through oath taking. The most pronounced was the Nyabingi Movement, which covered almost the whole region – Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC and Uganda ... This work investigates why [the groups] resisted, the nature of their resistance and the reasons why they were defeated. It explains why and how the European colonisation of this region created material conditions and seeds for thesubsequent recurrent conflicts in the GLR."--Page 6.
