Book The Spin Structure of the Proton

Download or read book The Spin Structure of the Proton written by Steven D. Bass and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main challenges in nuclear and particle physics in the last 20 years has been to understand how the proton''s spin is built up from its quark and gluon constituents. Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton''s spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small OCo only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton''s spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. The interface between QCD spin physics and the famous axial U(1) problem of QCD (eta and etaprime meson physics) is also highlighted. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (159 KB). Contents: Spin Experiments and Data; Dispersion Relations and Spin Sum Rules; g 1 Spin Sum Rules; Fixed Poles; The Axial Anomaly, Gluon topology and g (0) A; Chiral Symmetry and Axial U(1) Dynamics; QCD Inspired Models of the Proton Spin Problem; The Spin-Flavour Structure of the Proton; QCD Fits to g 1 Data; Polarized Quark Distributions; Polarized Glue o g(x, Q 2 ); Transversity; Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Exclusive Processes; Polarized Photon Structure Functions; Conclusions and Open Questions: How Does the Proton Spin?. Download or read book The Structure of the Proton written by R. G. Roberts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-11-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate/research level book describes our present knowledge of protons and neutrons, the particles which make up the nucleus of the atom. Experiments using high energy electrons, muons and neutrinos reveal the proton as being made up of point-like constituents, quarks. The strong forces which bind the quarks together are described in terms of the modern theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the â€~glue' binding the quarks being mediated by new constituents called gluons. Larger and new particle accelerators probe the interactions between quarks and gluons at shorter distances. The understanding of this detailed substructure and of the fundamental forces responsible is one of the keys to unravelling the physics of the structure of matter. This book will be of interest to all theoretical and experimental particle physicists.

Book Internal Spin Structure of the Proton from High Energy Polarized E p Scattering

Download or read book Internal Spin Structure of the Proton from High Energy Polarized E p Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is given of experimental knowledge of the spin dependent structure functions of the proton, which is based on inclusive high energy scattering of longitudinal polarized electrons by longitudinally polarized protons in both the deep inelastic and resonance regions, and includes preliminary results from our most recent SLAC experiment. Implications for scaling, sum rules, models of proton structure, and the hyperfine structure interval in hydrogen are given. Possible future directions of research are indicated.

Book A Study of the Spin Structure on the Neutron in Deep Inelastic Scattering of Polarized Electrons on Polarized Neutrons

Download or read book A Study of the Spin Structure on the Neutron in Deep Inelastic Scattering of Polarized Electrons on Polarized Neutrons written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal spin structure of the neutron, was studied in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized [sup 3]He target in the End Station A of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The spin asymmetry of the neutron was measured at energies between 19 and 26 GeV in the range 0.03 [le] x [le] 0.06 at an average Q[sup 2] of 2 (GeV/c)[sup 2]. The results are in agreement with a new measurement of the asymmetry by SMC within their six times larger uncertainties. The spin dependent structure function g[sub 1](x) for the neutron was determined from the asymmetry measurement and, its integral over x is found to be [integral]g[sub 1][sup n](x)dx = -0.038 [+-] 0.009. This result is 2.7 standard deviations from the Ellis-Jaffe Sum Rule and combined with the EMC results from the proton in very good agreement with the Bjorken Sum Rule. In the Quark Parton Model (QPM), in conjunction with the weak coupling constants F and D, from baryon decay, the result implies that the quarks contribute approximately 32% of the nucleon helicity. Finally, different ways of evolving the data, based on various theoretical models, is attempted and future aspects for spin physics, with emphasis at spin physics at SLAC, are discussed.

Book The Spin Structure Of The Nucleon

Download or read book The Spin Structure Of The Nucleon written by Bernard Frois and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-02-24 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy and nuclear physics laboratories (CERN, DESY, SLAC and Jefferson Lab) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.

Book Electronuclear Physics With Internal Targets And The Blast Detector Proceedings Of The Workshop

Download or read book Electronuclear Physics With Internal Targets And The Blast Detector Proceedings Of The Workshop written by M Butler and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-04-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop on Electronuclear Physics with Internal Targets brought together many experimentalists and theories in the field of electronuclear physics to discuss the next generation of experiments in this area. In line with the forward-looking theme of the workshop, the discussions centred on the many exciting new opportunities using polarized targets and the coincidental detection of electrons, pions and nucleons. With the upgrade to the MIT/Bates laboratory almost completed and the proposal for a large acceptance detector (BLAST) under review, these discussions can be said to be timely and appropriate.
