Book Interaction of K Mesons with Nuclei Optical Potential Below 800 MeV c Cross Sections

Download or read book Interaction of K Mesons with Nuclei Optical Potential Below 800 MeV c Cross Sections written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general features of K meson interactions with nucleons and nuclei are investigated. A first order optical potential is constructed, and used to predict K+ total elastic and reaction cross sections on typical nuclei in the low energy domain (p/sub lab/ less than or equal to 800 MeV/c). The sensitivity of these cross sections to changes in the nuclear radius and surface thickness is explored. Comparisons with the available K/sup +/-emulsion data are made. One emphasizes that a low energy K/sup +/ is the only available strongly interacting hadron which is weakly absorbed in nuclei (mean free path approximately equal to 7fm). This makes it an appealingly simple probe for nuclear structure studies.

Book Interactions of 1 15 Bev c K minus Mesons in Emulsion

Download or read book Interactions of 1 15 Bev c K minus Mesons in Emulsion written by Andrew L. Hamlin and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an analysis of 1240 interactions in Ilford K-5 emulsion are presented. A detailed study of the characteristics of several hundred stars was made. The emission of hyperons, K mesons, pi mesons and hypernuclei was determined. Each star was studied under 2500X magnification for the existence of a double center, a recoil and Auger electrons. A search was made for free lambda hyperons emitted from these interactions, and five events were located. The analysis is directed toward determining how often the strangeness of the K(minus) meson is accounted for by the emisssion of a visible strange particle or a neutral hyperon. The probability of a lambda hyperon being trapped to form a hypernucleus can then be estimated. The observed characteristics of parent stars was correlated with recent developments in the proposed model for heavy hyperfragments production. The study is divided into three projects: an analysis of charged hyperon production; an examination of interactions in flight; and a determination of the frequency of lambda hyperon production, both free and bound.

Book Multinucleon Capture of K Mesons and Some Associated Problems of the K Capture Process

Download or read book Multinucleon Capture of K Mesons and Some Associated Problems of the K Capture Process written by George Thomas Condo and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multinucleon absorption of K( - ) mesons is studied by searching for fast! hyperons emitted from K( - ) capture stars in normal and in water-soaked Ilford G5 nuclear emulsion. These fast (> 60 mev) hyperons are the only certain indication that a K( - ) meson was absorbed nonmesonically. On the basis of these data and their reasonable similarity with that of Evans et al., it is concluded that the capture of K( - ) mesons by the light emulsion nuclei (C, N, O) is 2.2! .3 times more likely to yield a fast hyperon that is K( - ) capture by Ag and Br. Combining this with the hyperon absorption probabilities deduced from a study of Auger electron emission, the multinucleon K( - ) absorption probability is approximately the same for light and heavy capturing nuclei in nuclear emulsion (excluding hydrogen). Of 56 fast hyperon events, 17 were consistent with K( - ) capture by a light nucleus. By combining these events with those reported by Evans et al., we find when a K( - ) meson is absorbed through a multinucleon channel by C12 and O16, that the basic interaction in 92% of the events is consistent with the destruction of a single particle subunit. The Auger spectrum resulting from capture and subsequent cascade of K( - ) mesons shows evidence for the line structure predicted by conventional theory. (Author).
